for the anon who said they feel like a stalker when they read and comment on too many fics in a row: I promise it makes authors days when you do that!! Seriously whenever I see someone left kudos on multiple of my fics i get super excited, and I have all my fics for my main fandom in one series so people can find more if they like one. It’s always incredible to see someone liked my work enough to seek out more of it <3
FUCK YEAH!!! EVERYONE NEEDS TO STOP DROP AND ROLL THAT SENSE OF CRINGE RIGHT OUT THE FUCKING DOOR AND GET BACK TO BEING INSANE ABOUT THE FICS THEY LIKE AND LEAVING TONS OF COMMENTS ON THEM

okay hey real question: what are good ways to describe fat characters?
I see a lot of 'have more fat characters' and I'm Here For It but as someone who is skinny and in a world where most existing literature makes characters fat only as a joke or an indication of some variety of moral badness, I'm not really sure how to describe them in a way that's not objectifying or insulting. like, I've grown up on poetic descriptions of thin characters ('long slim fingers' and 'willow figure' etc etc) but I haven't read flattering descriptions of fat characters and I don't know where to start. I've seen a lot of 'how to describe poc' or 'how to describe disabled characters' or whatever and I've seen art ref posts for drawing fat characters, but no posts about how to write them well. so. open call for advice or for examples you've found and like??

US people! The asshole who currently resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave signed an EO on 3/14/2025 to defund the Institute of Library and Museum Services. YOU have the chance to call YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVE and be REALLY ANNOYING in an INFORMATIVE WAY.
As an act of love to yourself, your neighbors, and your library workers, please call your Congresspeople and:
- Demand they do everything in their power to block this defunding
- Tell them libraries are important to you and you use their services and you don’t want those services to change or go away. You want MORE services which means MORE money.
- Demand they do everything in their power to end the current constitutional crisis. Congress has power of the purse, not the executive branch.
This is a fast and tangible way to support libraries! You get to vent your frustration about this regime! You get to know that I am genuinely thankful to you!
The information in this post is for the purposes of making phone calls. It is accurate, but not deeply nuanced. If you have further questions please send me an ask.

I was reading this post over on the Ao3 subreddit this evening and I think it brings up a lot of good points about how fandom, as a community, has been shifting in its treatment towards fanfic writers.
Fanfic is more popular than ever, which means there are more works "competing" for the readers' attention, who take on a passive approach that treats fanworks not as a means to talk to people with similar interests, but as content, as products. [...] Gift cultures thrive not on monetary exchanges, but on the expectation that the gifts freely given will be returned in an unspecified future through emotional and relational means. This used to set fandom apart, but it's slowly being absorbed into the mainstream way capitalism operates. Where does that leave us?
And it's demotivating to see the responses authors get when expressing their grievances with this state of affairs, or how they feel underappreciated. Being called entitled, told to write for themselves, or to promote their work as if writing and posting isn't enough. I write for myself, I post for the community. There are things I want to say about the source material and characters, and I do through storytelling. And I'm grateful about each of the comments I got, no matter how short. It's just that it doesn't feel like there's a community out there when no one talks back. Writers aren't just expected to write, but to do it for the "right reasons", and to also be as pleasant about it as possible, lest they'll be criticized by more people than the amount that's offering them support.
I've seen posts going around on tumblr that have approached this topic as well--that fanworks (particularly fanfic) should be created from the perspective of a perfect vessel that can pour, pour, pour out and never needs to be poured into. You should do it for the "right reasons" and not complain because "no one owes you interaction". But what is fandom if not interaction?
Writing fanfic is one of the most time-consuming labors of love that makes up a fandom. (That's not to say other fanworks aren't labors, time-consuming, or made with love. We're talking about fanfic). Your 300k+ enemies to lovers slowburn porn-with-plot fic that has reshaped the entire way you approach a specific pairing or media has been made with time, effort, for free, with the intention to be shared with you.
And in the state of current fandom, it has been made with the expectation to receive nothing back. Is that fair? Maybe. Silent readers exist and a kudos on Ao3 is at least an acknowledgment that some people read and enjoyed. But does it hurt to leave a comment? Even a heart emoji or an "I loved this, thank you for sharing!" is enough to at least start a dialogue, a conversation, form a connection.
That's not even to mention the isolation of fandom interactions to private Discords; time after time I've heard from fanfic authors who found out that there have been discord servers or twitter groupchats where their fanfic has been discussed, loved, and lauded at length--but never once was the author told this! Ao3 has comments for a reason. Many authors link their tumblr profiles or emails in their bio for people to reach out to them.
It's just a sorry state to see it go.

Hi! So I have an etiquette question. So I try to comment on fics with 0-2 comments. Something I've noticed is that others are only commenting 'update please'. Which I find rude.
Now if this happens on my fics- I typically let the commenter know that this is unmotivating to see that they only reason anyone comments on my labor is solely for more labor.
My question is, is it rude to reply to an 'update please' comment when it is on another author's story? It annoys me to see this happen to my fellow authors, but also it doesn't involve me.
Hello thank you for your ask and apologies for taking a while to respond.
My personal opinion is no, it is not rude, since fandom is all about community and it take a village to raise a child sometimes... I feel like maybe, it might even make the author's life a bit easier if they felt the same as you ('update please' comments are rude), to see that they are not alone in that view and not the only one shouldering the burden of telling off/educating commenters. However, this is of course subject to personal opinion, so I'll add a poll for the community to air their views (reblogs and additional commentary on this subject is always welcome of course).

Bidding sheets! They're important!
This is really two posts cleverly disguised as one post because they're both on the same topic: bidding sheets.
First: Don't forget to check them!
Before you place your bid, be sure to click on the bidding sheet to find out the current high bid. If your bid is the same as or lower than previous bids it will be ignored when we collect high bids at the end of the auction. Your bid has to be higher than all bids placed previously in order to count, and the only way to know how high that needs to be is to check the sheet. You can find a link to the bidding sheet in Step 1 of the auction instructions at the bottom of every auction post.
Second: Don't worry if the sheets look different!
As much as we currently rely on Google to run this auction due to lack of better options, it keeps trying to kill us with knives and hammers. The latest manifestation of that was changing the spreadsheets attached to Google Forms - you may have noticed the fancy purple stuff they've added.
Unfortunately, it turns out this purple stuff causes issues on our end, so we are going through every single bidding sheet and removing it individually. So if a bid sheet looks different from the last time you looked at it, don't panic!

do you have an "about" page with relevant information about yourself (eg pronouns, a name you go by, etc)? only i like your blog but always feel strange about following blogs with no face so to speak
I’ve answered this before so we’re going to do this bullet points style
-If there are categories of people you don’t want to follow please assume I belong to all of them
-If you need my demographic info before you can decide if you agree with my opinion or not please disagree with my opinions
-Please assume I am up to no good - this is a good thing to assume with any blog on here - even blogs with faces may be no-faces in disguise
-All of the information you want has been posted here at one time or another if you want to know but I like having that threshold of difficulty in place - if you want to get your creep on I want you to have to work for it
-I am hoping the irony of your having sent this ask anonymously is not lost on you
And, for all bloggers everywhere, a quick reminder: you don’t owe anybody jack shit!

I've seen a lot of fics disappear from my bookmarks, some 10+ years old, because they were added to an unrevealed collection. It makes me wonder if people realize what your fic being added to a collection actually means and if the authors approved it automatically without realizing what would happen.
If someone adds your fic to their collection, they can hide it! They can mark the collection as unrevealed and your fic will be unreadable to anyone other than them! If you're writing works for a surprise event, like a Secret Santa, this is really nice.
But if you're just writing and someone adds your fic to a collection for their own personal use and marks it as unrevealed, that. . . really sucks.
Tumblr media
I bookmarked this fic in 2017, almost 5 years ago. Knowing me, the fic itself was probably at least a couple years old at the time I bookmarked it.
This is a 5+ year old fic that is completely inaccessible now because it was added to a collection that, as far as I can tell, is literally just for the collection owner's own reference. There's almost 30 fics in the collection, all of them unrevealed.
Please don't blindly accept collection requests and if your works ARE in a collection, make sure that they aren't being hidden without your knowledge or consent.

Opinion Here’s how to get free Paxlovid as many times as you need it
When the public health emergency around covid-19 ended, vaccines and treatments became commercial products, meaning companies could charge for them as they do other pharmaceuticals. Paxlovid, the highly effective antiviral pill that can prevent covid from becoming severe, now has a list price of nearly $1,400 for a five-day treatment course.
Thanks to an innovative agreement between the Biden administration and the drug’s manufacturer, Pfizer, Americans can still access the medication free or at very low cost through a program called Paxcess. The problem is that too few people — including pharmacists — are aware of it.
I learned of Paxcess only after readers wrote that pharmacies were charging them hundreds of dollars — or even the full list price — to fill their Paxlovid prescription. This shouldn’t be happening. A representative from Pfizer, which runs the program, explained to me that patients on Medicare and Medicaid or who are uninsured should get free Paxlovid. They need to sign up by going to paxlovid.iassist.com or by calling 877-219-7225. “We wanted to make enrollment as easy and as quick as possible,” the representative said.
Indeed, the process is straightforward. I clicked through the web form myself, and there are only three sets of information required. Patients first enter their name, date of birth and address. They then input their prescriber’s name and address and select their insurance type.
All this should take less than five minutes and can be done at home or at the pharmacy. A physician or pharmacist can fill it out on behalf of the patient, too. Importantly, this form does not ask for medical history, proof of a positive coronavirus test, income verification, citizenship status or other potentially sensitive and time-consuming information.
But there is one key requirement people need to be aware of: Patients must have a prescription for Paxlovid to start the enrollment process. It is not possible to pre-enroll. (Though, in a sense, people on Medicare or Medicaid are already pre-enrolled.)
Once the questionnaire is complete, the website generates a voucher within seconds. People can print it or email it themselves, and then they can exchange it for a free course of Paxlovid at most pharmacies.
Pfizer’s representative tells me that more than 57,000 pharmacies are contracted to participate in this program, including major chain drugstores such as CVS and Walgreens and large retail chains such as Walmart, Kroger and Costco. For those unable to go in person, a mail-order option is available, too.
The program works a little differently for patients with commercial insurance. Some insurance plans already cover Paxlovid without a co-pay. Anyone who is told there will be a charge should sign up for Paxcess, which would further bring down their co-pay and might even cover the entire cost.
Several readers have attested that Paxcess’s process was fast and seamless. I was also glad to learn that there is basically no limit to the number of times someone could use it. A person who contracts the coronavirus three times in a year could access Paxlovid free or at low cost each time.
Unfortunately, readers informed me of one major glitch: Though the Paxcess voucher is honored when presented, some pharmacies are not offering the program proactively. As a result, many patients are still being charged high co-pays even if they could have gotten the medication at no cost.
This is incredibly frustrating. However, after interviewing multiple people involved in the process, including representatives of major pharmacy chains and Biden administration officials, I believe everyone is sincere in trying to make things right. As we saw in the early days of the coronavirus vaccine rollout, it’s hard to get a new program off the ground. Policies that look good on paper run into multiple barriers during implementation.
Those involved are actively identifying and addressing these problems. For instance, a Walgreens representative explained to me that in addition to educating pharmacists and pharmacy techs about the program, the company learned it also had to make system changes to account for a different workflow. Normally, when pharmacists process a prescription, they inform patients of the co-pay and dispense the medication. But with Paxlovid, the system needs to stop them if there is a co-pay, so they can prompt patients to sign up for Paxcess.
Here is where patients and consumers must take a proactive role. That might not feel fair; after all, if someone is ill, people expect that the system will work to help them. But that’s not our reality. While pharmacies work to fix their system glitches, patients need to be their own best advocates. That means signing up for Paxcess as soon as they receive a Paxlovid prescription and helping spread the word so that others can get the antiviral at little or no cost, too.
