Cosplaying Performance Art in Washington

I live in the suburbs of Washington, DC, now the theatre of the absurd for our toddler president. Last night, we went to a Washington Nationals baseball game last night in southeast Washington. DC has crime - it is a city - and real solutions are needed. However, Trump paints pictures of the city that are horrific and untrue - because he always wants to be in the news and to be the ‘big man’ that he isn’t.

The whole deployment of National Guard and ICE and other federal resources is simply bad performance art. I feel bad for the National Guard troops sent far away from their families for Trump’s performance schtick. DC residents don’t want them here, their families want them home. We, and other Nats and Mets fans walked by Hummers sitting on the grass and buses that had brought fatigue-dressed sightseers to watch us walk into a stadium. At least the National Guard doesn’t mask their faces, thank God. They hopefully will leave that to the ICE agents afraid to show their faces, and to some of the other agencies’ that seem to be cosplaying as ICE/Proud Boys in strutting around Washington looking to provoke conflict.

The Guard is simply unnecessary. Let’s look at a few facts amid the blather and lies. The states the Guard is coming from almost without exception have cities with crime much worse than Washington. Yet, as the governors of South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee have now all proclaimed, crime is out of control in the nation’s capital—so says Trump and hence it must be true—so they’re sending in their states’ troopers.

The irony here is that crime rates in the cities of their own states are markedly higher than they are in D.C. The murder rate in Washington, D.C., last year was 17 for every 100,000 residents.

In the past 24 hours, Mississippi’s Republican Gov. Tate Reeves said he’d send 200 Mississippi Guards to D.C. because “Americans deserve a safe capital city that we can all be proud of.” In 2024, Mississippi’s own state capital, Jackson, had the highest murder rate of any American city: 77 per 100,000, which was more than four times that in Washington, D.C.

Louisiana’s Republican Gov. Jeff Landry said he’d send the state’s National Guard to D.C., proclaiming, “I am proud to support this mission to return safety and sanity to Washington.” In 2024, Louisiana’s own state capital, Baton Rouge (whose U.S. House member is Speaker Mike Johnson), had a murder rate of 36 per 100,000, twice that of Washington, D.C. New Orleans had a murder rate of 31 per 100,000. Maybe Louisiana could get some help from Massachusetts where the crime rates are markedly lower.

Tennessee’s Republican Gov. Bill Lee ordered the deployment of his state’s National Guard to D.C. In 2024, Memphis had a murder rate of 48 per 100,000 residents, nearly three times the murder rate in D.C.

Last Friday, South Carolina’s Republican Gov. Henry McMaster ordered the deployment of 200 of his state’s National Guard to D.C. In 2024, North Charleston had a murder rate of 26 per 100,000 residents, roughly 150 percent that of D.C.

I guess it’s satisfying to them and MAGA in some weird “The South Will Rise Again” way, but it’s not about crime. My relatives who served in the Confederate Army never got to DC either, but I’ve moved on from the Civil War. This is assuredly not about crime, it’s bad performance art.

Very important and very dangerous

Guys, how long will this situation continue? How long will the world remain silent about the crimes of the occupation? What they are doing to us now is the most heinous form of killing and torture. What we are living through now, no one can bear. I lost my cousin yesterday, and I am very, very sad about what happened, but what bothers me about it is the way he was lost. He was sitting in his house until his little daughter came to ask him for food, and then we decided to go to Zikim to get food.

He was feeding his family. We were surrounded there, there were a lot of bullets and shells everywhere and a large number of martyrs as well. He told me not to be afraid, and that he would return with food no matter what it cost him. We were surrounded for several hours until the trucks loaded with food entered. He ran quickly and was very strong, and he got a bag of flour from among thousands of people.

And while he was walking towards us, happy and pleased with what he got of food, then he was shot by a cowardly army that knows no mercy, then he ascended to the ground as a martyr. What do you think of that? He went to bring food for his family and did not return alive. I heard his daughter say, “If only my father would return alive and we would not need food. We would be patient and die of hunger. It is okay. She only wanted her father alive.

What is the fault of these children now, they have become orphans without a father anymore, how will they continue their lives. Who will feed them? Who will face the cruel world for them? Unfortunately, we lost my cousin.

Please friends, one day my cousin and I were in the relief square in Zikim, and he saved me from death with a bag of flour. I was happy to get it once, and I returned to my family happily, trying to satisfy their hunger. So he helped me a lot before and he has a great deal of credit in my heart

So I thought I would return that favor to him now, I want to collect some money to buy some food for his family, and satisfy their hunger. Because now they are orphans and there is no one to feed them and water them, please help them a little to compensate for this great loss for them, this is all I can do now, and I hope that you guys pray for him to rest in peace .

I hope this stops as soon as possible. We are tired of losing so much. I think we cannot bear to lose another member of my family.

August 24, 2025 - Pro-Palestinian and human rights activists in Utrecht, the Netherlands, staged a massive "memorial protest" for the 13th time, with 18,000 children's shoes, to visualize the thousands of children that Israel has murdered in Palestine during the current genocide.

Esther van der Most, of the Palestine solidarity organisation Plant een Olijfboom ("Plant an olive tree"), explained the memorial protest and how important it is to humanize those killed by Israel in Gaza.
