INTRAMUROS

Intramuros, a city within the walls, is home to Spanish-era landmarks like fort Santiago. It is a historic walled area within the modern city of Manila founded at the mouth of the pasig river shortly after 1521 by the Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez De Legaspi. They began to build the intramuros in 0.67 square kilometers of land strategically chosen between Manila Bay and the Pasig river. It was designed as a tight grid to keep its streets functional but contained. Its purpose is to be the Spaniards’s political and military base in Asia. Grand administrative establishments, Spanish-style colonial homes, religious and educational intitutions was built within intramuros, where only the nation’s most powerful clans, mostly from Spanish decent, could settle. Intramuros was ruled by Raja and Sultan. The location of it was a place for exchange of goods known as barter. 1970 Spaniards went to manila after knowing that it is rich in different aspects. They conquered the place. Filipino’s are defeated by the Spaniards and start ruling the town. Raja Sulayman, Raja Lakandula and Raja Matanda have an agreement with the Spaniards and Miguel Lopez De Legaspi declared the Manila as a part of Spain. They started to build a wall in intramuros to protect it from people or indios. 1951 is the declaration of intramuros as the Philippine Bantayog together with the fort Santiago in Republic Act number 597 and the act also constitutes the rehabilitation of intramuros but there is not enough fund to renovate that place so the outcome was not so good. 1979, under the act number 1616 signed by Ferdinand Marcos, the intramuros administration was build. There’s a big difference of intramuros before and now but, there are things that stays the same even if decades past like the walls, the doorways, and the stairs. The intramuros pasts any calamities, wars, different colonisers and invaders, it represents the Philippines itself. Now, it is a popular destination for historical walking tours and cultural performances for visitors to immerse themselves in this country’s complex past.
INTRAMUROS BEFORE
Intramuros is a walled city and the area outside the wall is considered as province. Intramuros do not mark any modernity because the walls were bricks and there is no metal such as the street light, the gate, the marble bench on the gold course and people can only see a brown and green colors which is the representation old brick walls and grass.
INTRAMUROS NOW
For hundreds of years, Intramuros was Manila itself. Its walls did not only serve as a defense, but also as a witness to the city’s tumultuous years, which reverberated all over the country. A quiet escape where people can enjoy the vintage architecture, a tourist spot and a place in the Philippines that can bring you to history and show you different scene and situation in the history.

PRESERVED FOOTSTEPS
Preserved footsteps which is known to be Rizal’s, the under ground jails, old houses/cabin, golf course, Manila cathedral, Mananzan handicrafts, Fort Santiago wherein you can find the Rizal shrine, Backbone of Rizal which has a gun shot, a golf course, horse-drawn carts and Rajah Sulayman Theater are the things you can see in Intramuros. Intramuros brings you to history from which it all began.


UNDERGROUND JAILS
The other jails are underground, it is a jail intended for indios that disobeyed the rules of Spaniards.

OLD HOUSES/CABINS
The old houses or cabins are for the shelter of ‘Kapitan Heneral’ to rest after a long day.

GOLF COURSE
The Golf course before is just an open place located before entering the Intramuros, as the Spaniards returned the Intramuros to the hand of the real owners, the Filipinos, it is renovated and used for entertainment purposes.
MANILA CATHEDRAL
Manila Cathedral is the center of the Intramuros before. People believe that whoever exchanged their vows there, would not last forever.
MANANZAN HANDICRAFTS
The mananzan handicrafts is a store where you can buy a souvenir that can either be a key chain, a picture a wallet etc.



FORT SANTIAGO
Fort Santiago was a citadel at the bay side end of the walled city of intramuros. It is used to be the location of the palaside fort of the conquered Rajah Sulayman. Fort Santiago was few meters near the governor’s plaza and manila cathedral, both were destroyed by an earthquake in 1863. These were rebuilt. It is also a place where Dr. Jose Rizal detained until his execution in 1896 because the Spaniards knew about his works. It is also where the United States flag was raised to signify the start of American rule over the country year 1898. Filipinos lost their lives here during the bloody Japanese occupation from 1941-1945. Rizal shrine is also found in Fort Santiago, it is a place or a museum where works of rizal found. The different letters sent by his friends especially Blumentrit, his books, the timeline of his life, his biography, the things of Rizal and pictures were found inside the Rizal shrine. Backbone of Rizal which has a gun shot were also found in intramuros. Fort Santiago today is a national historical landmark which houses the rizal shrine and a meseum to celebrate the life of the national hero. It also has a theatre called dulaang rajah soliman for cultural and art performances. A white cross stands amid the manicured gardens in memory of Filipino freedom fighters
HORSE-DRAWN CARTS
Horse drawn carts also known as kalesa rattled through the city’s numerous gates to bring residents to various establishments: Plaza Mayor the main city square now called Plaza De Roma, the city hall or ayuntamiento and Plaza Santo Tomas where the original University of Sto. Tomas was built.
RAJAH SULAYMAN THEATER
Rajah Sulayman Theater serves as an entertainment for the Spaniards before. It is also where gatherings commonly happens.

Intramuros represents the story of the Philippines. Even if it is being abducted by different natives, it is still ruled by the Filipinos after and brought us to peace. There were darkest days, but as the sun shines there are hopes that bring us to horizon.
