Apparently the English version of Blue Exorcist has forgotten that a whole man is named Uzai.

Which is a great opportunity for a quick vocab/spelling conventions lesson, actually!

ウザい (uzai) is a slangy Japanese word meaning annoying/obnoxious. It's a contraction of うるさい (urusai) also meaning loud/annoying/obnoxious.

It's very, very commonly written with katakana for emphasis.

エレミヤ・ウザイ (Jeremiah Uzai) is the name of this Blue Exorcist character:

(Which. I mean. Aptly named man.)

It's always written in katakana because it's a non-Japanese name.

So yeah. That should say "Commander Uzai," which makes sense and fits a lot better in an otherwise formal sentence.

But there's a second way to figure that out besides context!

When i-adjectives and verbs are written in katakana, it's common to leave the parts that conjugate in hiragana.

Just like when you write them in kanji!

デカい (huge) デカかった (it was huge!)

ググる (to google) ググれ (just google it)

カッコいい (cool) カッコよくない? (pretty cool, isn't it?)

This doesn't happen 100% of the time, but if it's in a sentence instead of just a one-word utterance it gets more likely. We might expect ウザい here if it meant annoying, but it's all katakana like ウザイ, normal for a name.

Prompt 8 - What is your favourite move?

Yukio summoning the demons to destroy the Dominis whatever was such a power move. Some people genuinely believed Yukio would be loyal to Illuminati but there was just NO WAY. Especially after hearing Lucifer "we demons suffer so much" speech. Yukio isn't fond of demons and is suffering majorly because of them, of course he wouldn't agree. I was expecting him to betray but definitely not like that. It was just such an exciting turn of events.

Arthur one-shooting both the Impure Queen and Satan was also very very cool haha

Prompt 9 - What is your favourite headcanon?

I don't know if it's a headcanon? A theory? But it's linked to what I said earlier - there was no way Yukio would be loyal to Illuminati. And my theory is that Toudou actually understood that. He has quite a good grasp of the boy, so far he's the one who understood him the best. No matter how much Yukio would like to deny it, they ARE quite similar (and Katou confirmed Toudou doesn't have a grudge against his family, even if he did kill them... Yukio doesn't hate his brother either). Toudou gives him one last suspicious look before heading to his death, I think because he could see through Yukio's façade. But he did say he would have liked to see Yukio again when the latter could be "more honest and freely enjoy life". So he didn't rat him out lol

Catching up with this because why not! Spoilers for the manga btw.

Prompt 1 - Introduce yourself!

I'm Mohk, 7-8 years in uni hell (save me). I translate sometimes but it has been a while now, sorry about that. Usually the horrors get me before I can get go back to translating lol But I still plan on going back to Salaryman Yukio, I swear! I even got the physical copies while I was in Japan!! Prompt 2 - What role would you play?

A rando mob character who may or may not get caught up in the war between the "let's destroy the world" and the "nooo don't destroy the world it's so sexy" freaks hahaha More seriously I think Tamer/Dragoon sounds nice! But there are exorcists not affiliated with the Order and I would be one of these I think, not a big fan of big organisations.

Prompt 3 - Who's your favourite character?

Yukio sweep fr fr. He's the blueprint for me liking edgy depressed dark haired megane boys. Yet no one ever truly surpassed this blueprint. He's just perfect. THE one. THE ultimate. Yukio my son, my battle, my life, my sun, my everything hahaha

More seriously, I think Katou did a brilliant job at writing a teenager struggling with mental illnesses who has to juggle with far too many responsabilities a kid could shoulder. A lot of people really do be *pikachu face* when he acts exactly like a depressed teenager would. What did you expect?

This realism truly is what makes AoEx and Yukio shine imo!

Rin, Izumo, Mephisto and Toudou are my other faves (one isn't like the others...)

Prompt 4 - Do you have a favourite ship?

Yukio x Happiness of course.

More seriously, as mentioned many times, I'm not into shipping. But there are dynamics I like. So, platonically of course, Rin and Yukio have my whole heart. I think Yukio and Izumo should interact more though, they have a lot in common.

Prompt 5 - Which character has the coolest design?

For human characters, I really like miko!Izumo and Osceola.

For demons, the demon granny Lucy Yang summons is way too cool not to be mentioned. But Katou consistently makes great demon designs tbh.

Prompt 6 - Which character has the biggest glow-up?

...I have to admit it, I'm not a fan of Ryuji's rooster hair, so I like his recent(ish) design much more lol

I think Rin's design has grown past the typical shonen MC design with the whole horns and white hair thing (tho it's not permanent), so yeah, Rin has quite the glow-up!

Prompt 7 - Who had the biggest character development?

Oh, I can't go without saying Yukio here. His whole character arc is a banger from start to finish (tho it's not over yet lol). Even if tbh I wanted him to stay with Illuminati a bit longer (missed opportunity, I'll keep saying it). Watching him spiralling was both painful and a lot of fun (in the "it's so interesting I can't stop turning the pages!" way. And also I like angst so...). Seeing him trying his best to apologise and forgive himself is extremely moving. What a character. I appreciate how much care Katou poured into writing him. The way he develops just feel so natural for his character. Like pieces of a puzzle finding their rightful places. Not a linear process, but coming together (almost) perfectly.

I was about to go on a full character study but I'll spare you for this post, let's end it here hahaha

He seems to be sleeping all the time, so what kind of work does Lucifer do as the head of the Illuminati?

Lucifer basically exists as a symbol of the Illuminati. Even if Lucifer does nothing, various large global corporations and countries that agree with the Illuminati operate in accordance to his doctrines. But of course, at the end of the day it is Lucifer who has the power to make important decisions and may give detailed instructions that must be carried out according to his will (such as how the oyster farming should be done.)

Is there a reason why he likes oysters? Are there any other foods he likes to eat?

He only consumes elixir or oysters. Oysters are nutritious, easy to eat, and he just loves the taste for no particular reason. He generally likes them raw, but he’ll make an effort to eat dishes that contain oysters.

Lucifer seems to have a great deal of charisma. Is this an attribute that comes with being the King of Light (something like a radiating charm or pheromones)?

In the first place, I think demons have some level of charm, so demons that take on a human form tend to appear attractive to humans. Given that context, Lucifer, who stands at the top of the rest of the Ba’al, most definitely has a considerable amount of charm.

I’m curious about Lucifer’s daily schedule. How does he spend his time when his body is in good condition?

On days when he’s in good condition, he looks over the backlog of reports pending his review, or goes for a walk that also serves as exercise for his health, while offering words of encouragement to each department.

There is a huge aquarium that has been built inside of the Dominus Liminis from which he can oversee the oyster farming, and he will inquire about the state of their growth while looking at the tank.

Saburouta Toudou

A former exorcist from a prestigious family

He is a member of the Toudou family which has produced exorcists for generations. Due to the strong inferiority complex he holds towards his outstanding father and brothers, he was compelled to cast his lot with demons. He secretly operated as a member of the Illuminati and frequently came in contact with Yukio, corroding his mind with his honeyed taunting words. After devouring Karura, a fire demon, he gains powerful regenerative abilities and fire powers. In the final stage of the elixir's creation, he sacrifices himself in order to make Lucifer's wishes come true.

Saburouta's Past: Days of Oppression

In the past, Saburouta was routinely bullied by his older brothers. As the "Blue Night" came to an end, Saburouta killed all of his family except for his daughter, Homare, and set his house on fire.

Saburouta, who has become one of the "Chosen Ones", goes inside the distillation furnace for the sake of the new world that the Illuminati envisions.

"I wish my dearly departed father and older brothers could have seen this." - Despite being abused by his family, what was the meaning behind Saburouta's words when he started crying as he said this?

As this line makes clear, "I've always been a nobody but now I'm part of this amazing achievement..." Saburouta has extremely low self esteem but despite suffering at the hands of his parents and siblings, he does not hold any resentment towards them; rather, I think he just wanted to show them that he had become a part of such a great achievement despite not being able to live up to their expectations. But well, he did kill them. It's scary to think about.

All of the members of the Toudou family have a bit of white hair. Is there a reason behind this? (Do they have demon blood running in their family or something like that?)

There is indication that the Toudou family may have made a powerful pact with a demon or may have come from a family of Nephilm. For now, no further details will be shared.

What kind of person was Saburouta's wife?

It seems she was prone to hysteria. I don't think she was a good match for him.

Will there be more information regarding the Toudou family in the future?

I am not sure if I can match up to your expectations, but there is a chance I will be able to delve deeper into it.

Homare Toudou

The Captain of Phosphorus, Lucifer's personal bodyguards

Homare was born of the Toudou family which is known for their prestigious exorcists. However, thanks to her father Saburouta's treacherous actions, she lost all of her family during the Blue Night with the exception of him. After, they joined the Illuminati. She is currently the captain of Lucifer's personal bodyguards. At this time, she is hiding away with Lucifer in a castle at the center of Satan's stronghold. She has been charged to oversee the protection of Satan's heart against the Knights of the True Cross's siege.

One of the four Arc Knights currently in service associated with the Blue Night

A former researcher from Section 13. However, at that time he went by the name of Nikolae Eminescu. He was a key figure in the development of the elixir and one of the people involved in the Blue Night. Even after becoming an Arc Knight, he continued his research while secretly working for the Illuminati. He eventually created a vessel suitable for Satan to possess.

He is capable of fighting. However, he's no match for the other Arc Knights (Osceola, Lucy, Lightning) or Arthur. He was given the title of Arc Knight largely due to his achievements in researching demons and exorcisms.

Officially, Dragulescu does not have any involvement with Section 13.

Michael Gedouin

A wicked mad scientist

The Chief Officer of the Illuminati's Far East Laboratory. He worships Lucifer and looks down on everyone else. He sets his sights on the Kamiki family and uses Izumo's mother, Tamamo, who is possessed by the Nine Tails, as a test subject for the development of the elixir. When she is no longer of any use of him, he sets his sights on Izumo. However, Izumo defeated him in battle. And after that, Lucifer personally got rid of him.
