Silver Excerpt

The door was wide open, and outside knelt James, Henrietta's husband. The bell still rang throughout the house. A warning and a plea for help. Something Magic.

Elsie took one step through the door. The wind blew intense and cold, but beneath that was something else. A cold hunger that eats at one's bones. A shadowy dark nothing that fell all around them. It was too dark for evening.

She looked to James and saw why he was kneeling: a girl. A red haired girl was sprawled on the front stoop of the house. She knelt next to him, reaching for the girl. Her breath brushed against Elsie's hand. Good, Elsie thought. Alive. The girl bore no outward appearance of injury.

A Magic rolled off of her, different from the inky dark force that waited just beyond the light of the lamps on either side of the door. "Get her inside," Elsie said. "She's a sorcerer. Something followed her here."

"Radiance," Elsie said. "That's... incredibly rare." She placed a hand on the hilt of her blade.

Martha raised a brow at her now. "You would be capable of Radiance, too, child. If you let that Blade have your Soul."

Elsie tightened her grip and stepped back reflexively. Martha just laughed.

"That glamour is good, but I can smell the Magic on you. A bit of an odd mix you have. But until you Bind to it, you will not have true Radiance. Instead you just practice your Blessings with a bit more spirit."

"I know," Elsie said. "But what would be worth selling a Soul for? That's what I have to learn."

Martha smiled. "Good girl." She looked around at the rest of them and slid a piece of paper out of her pocket. "Here's where you can find the Gold Sorcerer. Do be gentle breaching the subject of his disappearance. He's getting cranky in his old age." With that, she snapped her fingers. The door clicked unlocked and the sign flipped back. "Now, as much as I hate to end this conversation, I do have a business to run. I appreciate your contribution. Please do come around again if you need any of my more specific services." She waved them off, opening up her book again and not giving them a second glance.

The World of Silver: Magic

Magic is a force that is a part of everything. Almost every living thing has a trace of Magic on them, though most stay at such low levels it can be difficult to detect. The manifestation depends on the practitioner’s origins and history.

Gray Magic

Gray Magic is the most common and most versatile form of Magic. It is the most widely practiced, used by most fae, sorcerers, and witches. It is flexible in that it can do almost anything within the imagination, from healing to cleaning to cooking. Gray Magic is rooting in both dark and light, making it the easiest to use. It is the force from which all other Magic is born.

Fae are born of Gray Magic. Their bodies are made of it. Because of this, fae and those associated with them that practice it experience physical exhaustion when it is overused. All Magic involves some physical toll, but Gray Magic has the most severe of it.

Curses

Curses are rooted in the darkness. They born from the underbelly of Tir na nOg, deep within its cave systems. Their exact origin is unknown, but they is known to infect any who spend too much time among them. They are used by Unseelie fae and any human practitioners who delved too deep into their studies.

Users of Curses can end up shattering their minds if they overuse their craft, which is why it is known as the most dangerous form of Magic that there is.

Radiant Magic

Radiant Magic is the rarest form of Magic. It is not found naturally in the fae, but only among sorcerers or Soul Mages. It is, at its core, regeneration Magic. Practitioners of Radiant Magic are known for their exceptionally long lifespans due to the regeneration their Magic gives them. Besides regeneration and healing, it is also a relatively flexible Magic, though it works best against forces infected with Curses.

Radiant Magic is born from the soul, one’s own will. Overuse of Radiant Magic can lead to both physical and emotional exhaustion and can cause users to have emotional breakdowns if too much is used in one sitting.

Blessings

Blessings are an attempt humans made at learning Radiant Magic. This Magic isn’t learnable, but it could be copied in weaker form. Blessings will never reach the power level of Radiant Magic, and they require a great deal of mental focus. Blessings can be applied to items and weapons, granting a protective or power boost against Curses. Only a select few are trained in the application of Blessings, due to the amount of time it takes to perfect them.

Blessings were created as a means for the Council to take some power for themselves. They refused to use Magic in any form, and so created their own form of it. The main downside of Blessings is that they are not compatible with any other form of Magic, and their use wipes out any congenital Magic trace one may have.

The World of Silver: Tír na nÓg

Ancient myth tells of the island paradise of Tír na nÓg, but this is not a normal island. The Floating Islands of Tír na nÓg are as Magical as the inhabitants. The Islands are said to float over a void of light. If one were to fall into the void, they would cease to exist. So the void was to be used as a punishment for fae that committed particular atrocities.

Notable places: 

The Castle: the residence of the Seelie king and queen, Titania and Oberon, as well as their Council of Elders. Together they rule the Seelie and, to some extent, the solitary fae. 

The caves: The caves on the undersides of the floating islands hold a particularly dark Magic of mysterious origin. Any creature who spends beyond a couple hours in the caves will be corrupted. These caves are where the Unseelie hold Court.

The mountains: These mountains are where the dwarves and some giant-types live. The mines are full of Magic ores that replenish over time, given the proper rest times and rituals.

The Castle Forest: Although the Islands hold many forests, the one surrounding the Castle holds a particular significance. All the trees in this forest are said to have been born of long forgotten fae who gave their physical forms to enrich the forest. 

Portals: Any fae with strong enough Magic is able to open a portal to the human world, but for most it is forbidden. There are guards at particular locations that are given permission to do so, allowing others to enter and leave as they will. 

The Lost Isle: This Island is shrouded in mystery. It exists in a halfway state, somewhere between  Tír na nÓg and the human world. Its exact location within the dimension of  Tír na nÓg is unknown, as it is far from the other Islands. Within the human world, it is an Island somewhere near the British Isles, but it is encased in such Magic that no human would dare to venture there. It is forbidden for fae to travel to the Lost Isle, as it is free passage between worlds as one would see fit.
