Game-Changing Sites for Writers
A recent search for a specific type of site to help me build new characters led me down a rabbit hole. Normally, that would make me much less productive, but I have found a treasure trove of websites for writers.
Bring Characters/Places to Life
There are a few different places you can use to create a picture of something entirely new. I love this site for making character pictures as references, instead of stock photos or whatever pops up on Google Images.
thispersondoesnotexist: every time you reload the page, this site generates a headshot of someone who doesn't exist. This is great if you're thinking about a character's personality or age and don't have specifics for their facial features yet.
Night Cafe: this is an AI art generator that takes your text prompt and generates an image for it. I tried it for various scenery, like "forest" or "cottage." It takes a minute for your requested photo to load, but no more than maybe five for the program to finish the picture.
Art Breeder: this website has endless images of people, places, and general things. Users can blend photos to create something new and curious visitors can browse/download those images without creating an account. (But if you do want to make an account to create your own, it's free!)
Find Random Places on Earth
You might prefer to set a story in a real-life environment so you can reference that place's weather, seasons, small-town vibe, or whatever you like. If that's the case, try:
MapCrunch: the homepage generates a new location each day and gives the location/GPS info in the top left of the screen. To see more images from previous days, hit "Gallery" in the top left.
Atlas Obscura: hover over or tap the "Places" tab, then hit "Random Place." A new page will load with a randomly generated location on the planet, provide a Google Maps link, and tell you a little bit about the place.
Random World Cities: this site makes randomly selected lists of global cities. Six appear for each search, although you'll have to look them up to find more information about each place. You can also use the site to have it select countries, US cities or US states too.
Vary Your Wording
Thesauruses are great, but these websites have some pretty cool perspectives on finding just the right words for stories.
Describing Words: tell this website which word you want to stop repeating and it will give you tons of alternative words that mean the same thing. It typically has way more options than other sites I use.
Reverse Dictionary: type what you need a word for in Reverse Dictionary's search box and it will give you tons of words that closely match what you want. It also lists the words in order of relevancy, starting with a word that most accurately describes what you typed. (There's also an option to get definitions for search results!)
Tip of My Tongue: this website is phenomenal. It lets you search for that word you can't quite place by a letter in it, the definition, what it sounds like, or even its scrambled letters. A long list of potential options will appear on the right side of the screen for every search.
---
Hope this helps when you need a hand during next writing session π

PLAY CHAPTER ONE HERE
Meet all of the ROs, investigate a crime scene, chase a murderer!
__________
I wanted to post the chapter, since it's been a while -- minor things may change as I'm still applying the feedback from my amazing beta testers.
also, here's explained how to turn off the music/noises, since I have not found a way to make that an option in twine

You are a fairly normal kid, as far as being βnormalβ goes. You stayed out of fights and tried to ignore the strange things happening in your life as much as you could. Life was going pretty well as you lived with your eccentric but loving father, if you ignore how many times you had been either expelled or transferred from schools.
If only you knew that things were about to get weirder than ever.
One day, on your merry way to school with your best friend, a strange man shows up before you can make it to your destination. Apparently he wants to kill you, that is if you don't hand him the spear of heaven, Gungnir. Because guess what? The Norse gods, they are real. Unfortunately, that also means so are the monsters and everything big, bad and ugly.
Now youβre being whisked off to Camp Valhalla, a special camp for people with a parent from the Norse mythology. As if all of these revelations were not staggering enough, you are claimed by Hel, the goddess ruling over Helheim, as her only child. And that alone is enough to have the whole nine worldsβ eye on you.
After a prophecy that basically says you are the one who shall be tasked to find Gungnir and return it to Odin, you set off with four other half-bloods to follow the trail left behind by the almighty spear of the Aesir god. Because if you fail, the mortal worlds will be defenseless against the onslaught of the giants. Ragnarok will begin. And the nine worlds shall burn with the fire of Muspelheim.

Elvan YalΓ§Δ±n [15 // NB // Child of ΓtgarΓ°a-Loki]: Known for being an all-around class clown, rare is the day when you don't see any sort of mischief reflecting in those dark green gaze of theirs. Theyβve stuck by your side for years, always looking out for you and making sure to help you get out of trouble. Suddenly being told that your best friend is the shapeshifting child of a literal giant from Norse mythology was not something you were looking forward to hear.
Determined to make sure you come back safe, Elvan volunteers to join your quest for the search of Gungnir. Hereβs the catch though, their dad is stubborn and he will stop at nothing in order to get his hands on the weapon.
ππ₯π₯πππ§ππ£ππ: slightly curly raven black hair that reach a little past their ears; green eyes that are so dark that youβd think that theyβre black from a distance; pale porcelain skin; scrawny asf in physique; a scar on their left arm that starts from their elbow and ends near their wrist, a gift from their dad when they legit fought against him to stay in camp valhalla instead of jotunheim; final height would be 5 ft 10 in. their ethnicity is turkish.
Eliott/Elain Ijzermans [16 // M/F // Child of ΓΓ³rr]: With a streak of quick-tempered disposition that runs a mile, there is no doubt that they are their fatherβs child. Upon your arrival on camp, they show no reason to hide how less they trust you. They are strict on others and on themself, valuing a disciplinary lifestyle above all. Being the Head Counselor of their cabin has not helped in how protective they are of the people they care about, the question is if you will end up being one of those people.
One of the handful of campers who volunteered for your quest, E joins you to protect a friend of theirs along the journey. But the road there is not easy, and the prickly child of the thunder god may come to rely on, and even trust, you as your quest progresses.
ππ₯π₯πππ§ππ£ππ: wavy golden blonde hair, kept ear-length for eliott and a little past the shoulders for elain; blue eyes that resemble the colour of lightning; sun-kissed skin that makes them look like a surfer dude/girl; athletic physique from being one of the campers who came at a very young age; their arms and legs are littered with tiny scars; final height would be 6 ft 1 (eliott) and 5 ft 9 in (elain). they have belgian roots.
Liam/Leah Cabrera [15 // M/F // Child of Freyja]: They have the kind of aura that makes you self-conscious of things that never even bothered you in the first place. With a rebellious streak and apparent aversion to material things which makes their half-siblings sigh in exasperation, they are definitely not what you would expect a child of Freya to be like. But deep down, you see their desire to prove themself reflected in their fiery hazel gaze.
You knew the only reason why L even bothered to volunteered for the quest was for their own share of glory. However, maybe they will find reasons to start caring about people other than themself.
ππ₯π₯πππ§ππ£ππ: dark brown hair in curls, reaches their back in leahβs case and is kept above ear-length for liam; hazel eyes that change from brown to green and vice versa randomly; olive skin tone which nicely compliments their eyes; physically lean; there is a scar on their right eyebrow from when they almost became odin 2.0 on their way to camp; final height would be 6 ft (liam) and 5 ft 8 in (leah). they are of mexican and brazilian descent.
Andrew/Andrea Narong [16 // M/F // Child of TΓ½r]: An overtly friendly camper with a million-watt smile, you would hardly see a frown marring their face on any occasion. Despite many incidents in their past proving it to be a bad habit, they are too quick to trust people, something that their friend E is sure would be a problem in the future. While having a natural leaning towards following rules, their unwavering loyalty to people they trustβwhich is a large amountβoutweighs it all.
They show the first signs of their innate bravery by being the second person to volunteer for your quest. Only time will tell if their eventual blind loyalty to you will be their undoing, or if itβd be what it takes to propel them to glory.
ππ₯π₯πππ§ππ£ππ: straight jet black hair, kept short for andrew and shoulder-length for andrea; deep black eyes holding surprising level of warmth; their ivory skin with pinkish undertones make them look more like a child of freya than lee does; awkwardly lanky but toned physique; andi has claw marks on their back from when a wolf attacked them as a kid; final height would be 6 ft 3 in (andrew) and 5 ft 11 in (andrea). their mother is an immigrant from thailand.

Play as the half-blood child of the Norse goddess, Hel.
Fully customize your character including: pronouns, gender, physical appearance, personality, sexuality, and many more.
Based on Norse mythology but with modern twists.
Make friends, make enemies, and most of all, at least try to stay alive till your eighteenth birthday.
Romance 1 out of 4 love interests (1 non-binary, 3 gender-selectable)
Inspired by Rick Riordanβs beloved series, βPercy Jackson and the Olympiansβ.
Grow up alongside your fellow campers and lose yourself in this YA fantasy series with coming-of-age themes.
Train hard and hone your skills as a fine warrior worthy of fighting against the giants when Ragnarok comes.
Spend your sophomore year fighting monsters instead of attending classes.
Great expectations, ominous prophecies, angry giants. What more could you ask for?
Is there any way to change the devastating results of Ragnarok? Will you be the driving force that defines the future of the nine worlds? Will you be the warrior who prevailed or failed?
Lastly, donβt forget to tag your underwear with your cabinβs name.

Long ago the four realms, Sulia, Hanora, Luseda and Lybris, were bridged together, and the area where they connected became known as the Kasrine Plains.
Now, the Kasrine Plains are home to the most prestigious magical institute in all the realms. A place for students from all realms to come together. A place to foster peace and unity.
For years you've dreamt of attending, of leaving your life in the rural Harvest Region of Luseda behind, and finally that dream is coming true.
You have the chance to strength your magic, and learn more of the other realms, you plan on taking it. But upon your arrival, you are met with unrest from an age old conflict. The Cambria and the Starling.
One coven became known for their use of dark magic and experimentation, while the other held a presumably golden reputation, a war between the covens nearly wiping everyone in each coven out.
But with two remaining survivors now attending the institute, tensions are high. The Plains are unsteady. The unity is fractured.
There's nothing you can do.
There's never anything you can do.
With the bonds between realms cracking, and the school threatening to fall into ruin, you must convince your classmates to join together -
It never works. They try and fail. The Plains are fragile, they always break.
And you always start over. It's like some trial. And you keep failing.
You can't - you can't live like this anymore.
In a book where deities, magic and mystical beings exist, you play as the main character who has become aware of your story's ill-fated end, and seeks to change it.
Customizable gender, pronouns, sexuality, name, species (fae, elf, infernal), appearance, semi-set personality.
Choose your Patron god, which will influence how your magic develops.
Choose your own romance or, finally, avoid romance altogether, with five locked routes.
Four romance options, so far; one female, one male, one gender selectable, and one genderfluid.
(Routes will be locked, so you'll choose who you want to pursue in chapter one, or you'll choose not to pursue anyone.)
The Daughter of Stars
Celeste Starling is the last surviving blood of the disbanded Starling Coven, left traumatized and abandoned after the war against the Cambria a decade ago.
Like most in her bloodline, Celeste chose Valos, god of home, as her patron. But unlike her late family, Celeste's decision was not trivial, nor was it simply following the footsteps of those before her.
She looked... profoundly bored. And while you recall that that expression was not unusual, you knew the boredom was more or less a facade.
With a sigh, Celeste absently twisted one of the many old and glimmering rings stacked on her fingers, her flat gold eyes trailing slowing across the classroom. The door opened, and her attention snapped towards it, a dark pointed ear poking out of dark cobalt curls...
The Infernal Son
Lysander Astrae is from a family formerly aligned with the Starling Coven, and was a close childhood friend of Celeste's prior to the Starling vs Cambria War. He and his family harbour guilt over losing contact with her in the following years.
Lysander is a half Fae/half Infernal, and native to Luseda. His patron is Tyaris, god of love.
He stood tall, with an imposing aura. But, you began to notice, he never looked unkind. Just... watchful. Lysander's mismatched gray eyes paid too much attention, showed too much concern behind glossed lenses.
He shifted his gaze, head tipping, inky black hair moving to reveal his other bone like horn - broken and uneven. You'd be lying if you claimed you hadn't wondered how that had happened.
The Sea's Child
Robbie Marerto (m/f) is a mage from Lybris, of ambiguous heritage, who was raised by adventurer parents at sea. They've been enrolled at the Institute for a slightly more grounded change, and always takes the position of your best friend.
Robbie is a follower of Galena, goddess of the sea.
Lanky and with more limbs than they knew what to do with, it wasn't hard to assume that Robbie had barely spent time with both feet on solid ground.
Robbie beamed up from were they sat on floor after tripping over their own feet, wavy sun kissed hair hanging over their teal eyes. Their grin calmed to something more personal when you offered a hand to help them up.
The Outcast of Nobles
Regal Atlas Codya is a mage from a noble family in Luseda. Ze are a fellow first year and one of your dorm-mates.
Atlas was blessed by zir patron, Naara, goddess of the Afterlife, and has the abilities of a medium.
Ze was quiet. Almost unnervingly so. Other students veered around zir in the halls, giving a wide berth.
Altas rubbed at the pale specks of skin on the lower half of zir face with a perfectly manicured finger, lips pursed as zir ruby eyes swept across the crowd of people unnerved by the aura of death around her. Ze brushed the red hair off of the umber skin of zir forehead and carried on zir way.
More characters to come

Kasrine Institute of the Arcane; The Neverending
You are a rural mage from the realm of Luseda. You grew up in the harvest region, helping your family tend to their garden, but now that you're of age, you're about to live your dream and attend the Famed Arcane institute on Kasrine Plains where the four Realms meet.
At the Kasrine Institute of the Arcane, you find yourself in the middle of a conflict between the disbanded Starling and Cambria covens who have been at odds for the past century, their seeds of conflict causing unrest in the plains holding the realms together.
Only together can you strengthen bond between realms.
But....
This has all happened before. You've fought to protect the Plains... The school more times than you can count. You've strived for unity across the campus. All for naught.
And everytime, you find yourself right back on the first page, of the same story.
The deja vu is slowly wearing away at you.
You can't keep living this story.
