Week 15 - Final thoughts
I see design merging more and more with technology. I think that technology is becoming more and more of a factor in all aspects of our lives. I think that it may even become more reliant on Artificial Intelligence.

Week 14 - Your Choice
I would love to learn more about the process of Design. My favorite video from the course was "The Deep Dive" I love to watch how things work like that. I would like to see more as well as different teams working through the design process. Along with that I would like to know more about how an artist or designer chooses which principle of design their piece or project will follow. Does it happen naturally or is that a conscious decision?
I think that this course has created a greater interest in architecture for me. I never quite understood it but now I have a way to observe architecture with a wider view of understanding.

Week 11- Graphic Design
Citizen Designers are people who may not have a background in art or design but have input into the design process of something to improve the functionality to the public. They help to create spaces that all people can thrive and enjoy. It is relevant because this is how we as the public can ensure that the products and art we see is pleasing to us.

Week 7- Architecture
Emphasis and contrast: Emphasis is when there is a clear visual focus created by the artist. Contrast is the difference between parts of a piece of art that is usually meant to accentuate both.
Tumblr media
I chose to take a picture of an arrangement that I made in my own bedroom. I think that it is very cool that I organized these pieces in a way that was aesthetically pleasing to me without understanding the concept that I was using. I created contrast by taking individual pieces and arranging them to draw the eye. Using the dark image in the middle because it was the one that I wanted to most focus to be on. The artist of the middle dark piece used emphasis to draw the eye to the skeleton as well as the muscular system by choosing to set these very light images on a dark backgroud.
Movement is the use of artistic elements to move the viewers' eye
I think that in my first image you can see a form of movement in the tule that I used the draping of the tule indirectly directs the eye downward.
Tumblr media
Calvary Presbyterian Church, is another example I think at first glance it just looks unsymmetrical. But when you start to focus your draw is drawn to the smaller peak side of the church and then your drifts upward to the other peak and down the tower toward the center and straight up the middle.

Week 6
Tumblr media
This is a picture of the Frank Lloyd Wright Houses on Burnham street. My mom is an interior designer and has a lot of interest in Architecture, so she took me here to look at these. These houses are very boxy and modern and small. There functionality is what I find interesting. About the homes Frank Lloyd Wright said “I would rather solve the small house problem than build anything else I can think of.”
Tumblr media
Here is the Pabst Mansion (2000 W. Wisconsin Ave.) Built in 1890 The Pabst mansion was a huge undertaking of the Gilded age. IT was designed by George Bowman Ferry and Alfred Charles Clas. The house was meant to host lots of people and parties. It did exactly that. There is a carriage overhang on the side of the house that was originally meant for guests who were coming to the home. It was recently renovated. But, I love the stone architecture. You can tell just by looking at the outside that a lot of effort was put into the symmetry and size of the building as a presentation of wealth. And the inside is not only beautiful and spacious to accomodate as many guests as possible.

Week 4
Because, I live in the city my walk was very urban. I went for a walk in Klode park, in Whitefish Bay. The object that I found to be intriguing was a bench. At the park they have beautiful wooden benches that are dedicated. They are a dark wood that have wrought iron hardware and arm rests. I found them to be quite pleasing, they were placed strategically in the park to offer the person seated the best view of the lake. I especially enjoyed that the benches were all quite similar but all clearly served a different purpose. Some had an arm rest directly in the middle, for 2 people who may not be together to relax. Some were shorter benches that may be for a couple who wanted to sit. The Iron on the bench was beautifully twisted to create a movement, but it was not twisted where a person would put their arm. I found them all to look like they belonged together and the combination of the dark wood and dark iron made the benches seem to belong.

Week 2
I would define design as the plan that involves visual and functional aesthetic to create a product that serves it's intended purpose to the highest potential.
An example would be the shopping cart from "The Deep Dive" the goal was to create a new cart that increases the functionality, convenience and look of the existing shopping cart. As for a product that I use, shoes. I recently bought a new pair of shoes that I meant for weight lifting. The design of weight lifting shoes are much different because they serve a different purpose than other shoes.
I think that it is very interesting to look into functionality.
"Time and again we see successful products that were not necessarily the first to market but were the first to appeal to us emotionally and functionally." pg 9 of Design thinking
It seems to me that in our society we tend to want the item that is first to market but the greatest products in terms of design don't happen that easily on the first try.

Week 1- About Me
My name is Katherine Lemkuil. I am a kinesiology Major. I took this class, because it was a requirement, but design is a broad subject and i think that I can relate it to my life and my interests within Kinesiology. I really have no experience. I love to buy shoes and design is my entire motivation behind picking which shoes I like.
