I’m Kicking SUGAR in the ASS! (30 Day Blog Challenging–> Myself)
Day 3: I’m Not Fucking Funny.  I realize after watching this episode of The Katering Show that without the happiness of sugar I too may lack all that personality I once had.  Actually I’m feeling great. The sun is shining and the kids are getting back to school. So there’s that.  Todays Mantra is inspired by the letter S. For sugar and sarcasm. I’ve thought about quitting this already A LOT. I forgot I just discovered an amazing new fall tea latte from my local coffee shop and now I can’t have it!!!! I wasn’t thinking. Argh. Mantra: “I easily replace foods containing refined sugar with natural foods.”
It’s been very easy to remove refined sugar from my coffee and tea and just staying away from any of the shops. Eating clean at lunch and dinner isn’t too difficult. The after-hours is my tough time. I will call on this mantra to help me stay focused in the evening when I feel like eating something sweet for no reason.

Things That Have Surprised Me In Their Sweetness: A Short List
After you’re off sugar, flavors get crazy nuanced. I’ve never been a sensitive taster or smeller, but DAMN! The flavors! I get it now. I get why people become foodies.
Grapefruit - Fucking delicious. And an orange is waaaaay too sweet.
Broccoli - I know. It’s weird.
Corn - I definitely get how corn becomes corn-syrup. Sometimes when I’m feeling sad, I eat a can of corn. It’s like my “pint of ice cream on the couch”. (Gods that’s weird)
Cinnamon is a candy treat. It’s bananas. And bananas are cake. CAKE I TELL YA!
I’m not crazy you guys. I’m not! *eye twitch*

So I actually thought I was a healthy person... how wrong was I!
I have found from my own experience that for many years I actually believed that I was a healthy person.  I ate what I thought was the right things, a lot of low fat products, health bars, protein bars, I made sure that my breakfast cereal had the right words splashed across the box. I also made sure I ate healthy snacks such as dried fruits...

The Shame of Quitting Sugar
Yep, I felt ashamed when I quit sugar.
I felt bad every time I had to inspect a menu, interrogate a waiter, question my friends and family who had made me some food and spend hours in the grocery store inspecting every packets ingredient list to find hidden sugars.
It was tiring and I felt awful.
It was only until my second round of quitting sugar that I was able to really own my decision to quit sugar and to move past my own shame of having to be a "sugar detective".
The first time I tried, I ended up finding the first few weeks unbearable, and I was just not that dedicated to really give it up; but not only that the shame and how I felt just made me feel worse.
The best way to cope with these feelings, from my own experience is to:
If you are ever invited over to someone's house for dinner, let them know WELL in advance about your new diet. If this is going to be a challenge, offer to bring a meal. Offer to make the new amazing dessert from the I Quit Sugar Cookbook. Just make sure you are not going to be a dinner burden and be open to the idea that you may eat some sugar and it won't kill you (that night!)
Just avoid packaged foods. Save yourself the time and stress of going through every packet on a shelf. Make your own versions of food or just go without until you have worked out a new long term food plan.
Going to a restaurant? Research it beforehand. Know what you want to order and go in with a plan. Not sure what to order - then pick the least sweet food, and don't even bother ordering a dessert. To make it easier, you could eat something before you go and not feel bad for just ordering a appetizer.
Stick to water in all social situations. Don't bother with diet drinks, "sugar free" sodas, lemon tea etc. Either have black tea, black coffee or water. It is easy and sure, it may not be fun but it is safe and while you are starting this is the hardest part.
Be ready and open to talk about quitting sugar but never be militant about other people doing it as well. It is your choice to quit sugar, not theirs.
No matter how much people may think your crazy or weird, keep going. You will be better for it!!!
Quitting sugar for me was hard, but hopefully your journey will be easier!!

My favorite way to curb your cravings is to eat more healthy fats. Sounds AWFUL and scary but introducing avocado, coconut oil and even delicious coconut butter really helped me stay focus and in control.   ALSO! cutting sugar from my drinks.. easy to implement and easy to control. Easier than food that is for sure!

Super Raw Food Balls Recipe:
These are great to make a batch of for a healthy snack or when you get a sweet craving. You can alter the recipe and ad dried fruit or nuts of choice. You also need to play around with the quantities until you get a consistency you like.
Today I made these:
2 hand full pitted dates 1 hand full sultanas 1 hand full mixed raw unsalted nuts 2 tbsp raw cacao powder 1 hand full Gogi berries 1 hand full shredded coconut 1 tbsp coconut oil
(I don’t really use measurements which is why I have written ‘hand full)
In a food processor blend the dates, sultanas, coconut oil and cacao on high until relatively smooth.
Ad nuts, gogi berries and coconut and blend on low.
Spoon mixture into hands and mould into balls.
That’s it! Very easy. Be creative and try different flavours by adding things like cinnamon, nutmeg, cocao nibs etc.

REALLY THAT EASY!?! YUMMMM

Coconut Butter
makes one small jar
Ingredients
2 cups dried, shredded, unsweetened coconut salt to taste (optional — I used Tahitian vanilla salt from The Meadow to sprinkle on top of my coconut butter toast)
Equipment
Food processor or Vitamix blender
1. Process the Coconut - Put the dried coconut in the food processor or blender. Mix on high speed, scraping down the sides often for approximately 18 or 19 minutes, until a thick paste is formed.
• 3 Minutes - The coconut breaks down into clumps
• 5-8 Minutes - The coconut starts to look more sandy and paste-like. Scrape down the sides of the processor as often as necessary to continue processing the coconut.
• 11-15 Minutes - The coconut starts to pull together into a buttery paste. Continue to scrape down the sides of the processor regularly.
• Finished - The coconut has been ground to the consistency of peanut butter, thick and spreadable. Add salt to taste if desired, or leave plain and add salt when serving.
2. Store the Coconut Butter Store in a small jar in the fridge, scraping up spoonfuls and microwaving for 10-15 seconds to soften and serve.
