There’s a part of me that wishes everything could just stay the same. That we could all just stay like this forever. There’s a part of me that doesn’t really want to grow up. I’m not sure I’m ready for it. I’m not sure I’m ready for the world. But things can’t stay the same and they shouldn’t. No matter how scary it is, we have to move on and we have to grow up because things, well, they might just change for the better. So, we have to be brave and if our dreams get broken along the way, we have to make new ones from the pieces.

Thinking about how James sees Erin for exactly who she is and likes her anyway. This girl who has always tried to mold herself into someone 'worthy' of these cool, popular lads she likes - this goofy, uncoordinated, self-righteous girl full of chaos and fire and delusions of grandeur... a girl who is seen by her best friend James, at her best and her worst, through times of joy and indignance and irritability - and she is loved. Loved by a boy who admits his feelings for her one day, but then still doesn't hesitate to tell her that she has no integrity. Him recognizing Erin at her lowest doesn't change the way he feels about her. There's no blindness there. No sugarcoating.
Just a very reasonable, very kind lad who knows her and keeps her in check when she goes off the rails. Who isn't afraid to tell her when her ideas are bad or she starts to lose her head. Who is her friend and supporter and literally her rock, her grounding force - in series 3 when she's feeling frightened or overwhelmed or sad, James is the first person she looks to for support; the person she physically reaches for when she's in need of comfort.
She does this because he is soft and grounding and he already SEES her, so she knows she can trust him to hold all of her.

Jerin future/family headcanon:
. In 2008, Erin and James are expecting their first child. It's early January, Erin is ten days past her due date and absolutely sick and tired of being pregnant. Plus, Derry has been hit with a record-breaking snowfall over Christmas that's iced over every possible surface, meaning she can't so much as walk down her own driveway to collect the post without James hovering nervously beside her and insisting she be careful.
. Despite the discomfort of being ten days overdue, Erin is surprisingly calm about becoming a parent. James, on the other hand, is a nervous wreck, mostly due to the complete absence of a real parental figure for most of his life. For the past nine months he's been obsessively reading baby books, panic-buying dummies (pacifiers for the American readers), onesies and an unfeasible amount of nappies, currently stuffed into a cupboard in the upstairs hallway.
. On January 8th, Erin starts getting aches and odd feelings from around 6pm onwards, but doesn't think anything of it and goes to bed. At 1am on January 9th she wakes up and realises she's having proper contractions, but she doesn't even bother waking James due to her ma's advice that labour takes forever and she'll have a few hours before it's time to go to the hospital. She does send Mary a quick text to let her know things are starting.
. At 2:33am in the Quinn house, Gerry is woken up by noises in the kitchen. He wanders downstairs to find Mary in her dressing gown and slippers, making piles of cheese sandwiches and filling a travel flask with tea.
Gerry: *very confused and sleepy* What's happening...?
Mary: *frenziedly buttering bread* Erin texted me, we've got to start getting ready.
Gerry: And that somehow involves sandwiches?
Mary: For the car ride, keep up, Gerry! The awkward bastards aren't gonna let her eat at hospital!
. At 3am at Erin and James's house, James is woken up by his wife, who turns on the bedside lamp and calmly informs him that her contractions are starting to get closer together and they should probably get ready to go to the hospital. He then proceeds to jump out of bed shouting, "Oh my God, IT'S TIME" and frantically looks for the hospital bag and attempts to get dressed at the same time until Erin has to grab him by the shoulders and remind him to breathe.
. 3:10am - Erin is dressed and struggling to put her shoe on until she eventually just gives up and decides to go with slippers (they'll be much comfier, anyway). James has had to go outside into the freezing winter morning to pour boiling water from the kettle over the car windshield, which has iced over in the night.
. 3:15am - Erin sends a text into the "Derry Girls" group chat letting the rest of the gang know that they're headed to the hospital, but it'll probably be a while and she'll message later when they know more. James, meanwhile, has been fighting with the heavy, overly complicated carseat which requires a lot of adjusting and fiddling to get it installed. There was one moment where he accidentally caught his finger in one of the attachment parts and it bled, and he genuinely considered just throwing the stupid thing off the nearest cliff.
. 3:20 - The bastard carseat is finally installed, James's finger has a plaster on it, the car is packed and they're ready to set off for the hospital.
James: *In the car, driving at approximately 5 miles an hour because road safety is life* Okay, I've got the carseat, hospital bag, map... Is that everything? I swear I'm forgetting someth-
*Slowly looks across to the empty passenger seat *
James: Oh, shit!
(Shot of James's car reversing speedily back down the street, coming to a stop in front of their house with Erin standing by the gate, her arms folded and looking unimpressed.)
Erin: *Gets in the car*
James: *Opens his mouth to apologise*
Erin: Just drive.
. They arrive at the Quinn house at 3:25am, greeted by Mary and Gerry shuffling out the front door bundled up in winter coats and knitwear, Mary toting a large bag filled to the brim with sandwiches and other supplies. They get in the car and head for the hospital, James driving painstakingly slow because of the weather and Mary attempting to force-feed Erin cheese sandwiches en-route while talking excitedly about how she's going to be a granny. Gerry falls fast asleep in the back seat and is rudely awoken ten minutes later by Mary shaking his shoulder and the sound of his daughter groaning in pain mid-contraction. Mary warns him if he dares fall asleep again instead of being useful and comforting his child, he'll never hear the end of it. He spends the rest of journey holding Erin's hand and trying to keep his eyes open.
That's all for now, I will post Part 2 of possibly my longest headcanon yet soon:) Enjoy!

My head canons for the Girls post graduation:
Spoilers Obviously
First James and Erin were dating in 3x07 and no one can convince me otherwise. Erin and James dated until the end of summer. They were each other’s firsts for a lot of things. Their first “I love you” happens in the middle of their first real fight as a couple. They were each other’s first time which happened about 5 minutes after their first fight. They both got into different Universities and so agreed to break up before leaving for school so they don’t strain their relationships with their friends since they won’t see them as much now (I imagine a last kiss at the train station as one of them boards).
Erin goes to school and studies English and Literature. She gets a job at a publishing house after graduating from University and continues her writing (she will often try to slip her manuscripts to her bosses). She started to focus on YA fantasy when Harry Potter blew up and Erin frequently calls J.K. Rowling her “Nemesis.”
James goes to school in London for University but also because he finds out his mom’s pregnant by her new husband (James didn’t even know she remarried). He decides to be close by to give his new sibling at least a partially stable “Parental Figure.” He decides to Major in Film but also takes a minor in business. Not long after graduating he goes over to his mom’s to find out she’s packed and gone on a vacation with her new boyfriend and that she’ll be “back in a month, tops.” James realizes almost immediately she’s packed all her stuff and probably isn’t coming back anytime soon. Knowing he can’t care for both himself and his little sister (plot twist his mom’s horrible) James moves back to Derry. When he moves back he buys one of Dennis’s old shops and makes it into a nerd paraphernalia store. It does well even before the Doctor Who revival because it hosts regular movie nights showing films sooner than even theaters thanks to some old film school friends.
Orla decides to travel after graduating. She packs a bag (of mostly sweets) and over the next 5 years travels the world. She steps foot on every continent (when she visited Antarctica she had to be stopped from smuggling penguins in her bags), she learned self defense fighting from multiple sources, discovered she’s a prodigy in Yoga, met Kamal when she was in Africa, fought in underground fight clubs, accidentally started a cult, and at one point assisted MI6 with an operation (she may or may not be an inspiration for a Bond Girl). After getting back home she told her stories to Erin who used them as inspiration for a moderately successful YA series. Also Orla is never hurting for money as she apparently partially owns the rights to several international hit songs and movies. She currently owns a Yoga studio with an Ice Cream/Sweets shop attached.
Clare after being in therapy to help with her grief and anxiety she became fascinated by the human mind and started studying psychology. She eventually becomes a therapist and opens a practice back home. While she deals in all matters of mental health she specializes mostly in anxiety. A few years after opening her practice she also starts a Help Line for LGBTQ+ kids and teens (it’s her proudest accomplishment). Clare also starts dating the manager she hired to run the help line. They’ve been living together since 2011 and were engaged in 2012. They adopted 3 kids (2 girls and a boy) as well as 2 cats before they officially got married in 2020.
Michelle lost focus a bit after graduating. With her friends gone she didn’t know what to do. She became a bartender and was actually pretty good at it (she also likes to joke she’s doing what Clare wants to do without the fancy degree and she gets to drink when she does it). After a few years slinging drinks she realizes she wants more out of life. After spending time with her brother Michelle decides to get involved with the Justice system. She starts taking night classes studying pre-law and while she is struggling to find a law school she has a chat with her mom and decides to change course. Her mom asks her how she wants to help people and tells Michelle that while she doesn’t have a medical degree she believes she makes more of an impact in people’s lives than the doctors. After that Michelle joins Law Enforcement to not only help her community and people but also to hold her fellow officers to a higher standard. Michelle now is a Chief Inspector. She also is divorced and shares custody of her twins with her Ex.
Also Erin and James did eventually get back together. They did date other people (James dated Jenny Joyce for about 2 months, a secret he plans to take to his grave), but they started dating again in 2007, exactly 10 years to the day of their first kiss. They got married on the 10 year anniversary of there breakup (Erin liked the full circle feel of it). They got pregnant about 6 months after their wedding and have a daughter, Josephine Deirdre Maguire (they call her Joey).
Sorry it’s so long. If you made it this far kudos to you.

I decided to do my own S3 Erin x James post like this one for S1-S2.
If I’ve left anything out or you want me to edit something, please tell me.
3x01
James zooms into Erin’s face in his film project || Their matching outfits || Erin pats James’ shoulder reassuringly, after Michelle mentions his mum doesn’t love him (which is apparently the reason why he got a very expensive camcorder) || They’re a two person team of Erin writing and James directing the film project || The two of them bickering like an old married couple, when James carefully tells Erin that her script could be improved upon || They look at each other several times when Michelle goes off on one in Erin’s bedroom || James mentions that The Video Village is a bit like a library and Erin nods in agreement || The two of them get squished together against the school door || James nodding in agreement and looking at Erin who’s suggesting that the gang need to work out how to get the door open || Erin’s smile and general expression towards James when he suggests he’s going to jimmy the lock || James is the one who’s keeping Gerry’s video card for Erin || Erin glares and looks annoyed at Michelle calling James a simpleton but begins to smile once James begins to speak || James quoting some of Erin’s writing, when recording the gang inside the school || When the gang are bungled into the back of the van, Erin and James both rant on about their rights to the police officers || Erin grabs James’ hand out of fear and they hold hands together, whilst in the van || James keeps looking over at Erin throughout the gang’s time at the R.U.C. Station || Erin and James have matching ring necklaces when getting their GCSE results
3x02
At the start of school, Erin is concerned and immediately asks Michelle where James is || Erin mouths a sorry to James, after Michelle tells him they don’t listen to him || Erin and James stand incredibly close to one another, as the gang look up at the poster for the Stars in their Eyes competition || Erin and James matching by wearing their Friends across the Barricade t-shirts when the gang rehearse their performance, whilst standing by one another || At dinner, they sit by one another || Erin sits in the front of the car whilst James is driving || James voices his and the gang’s concern about Erin being upset about Mary’s possible affair with the plumber, his worried looks showing added concern || Pre-performance, the gang pray together, with Erin and James standing together || Erin and James perform by one another, when on stage || James looks concerned when looking over at Erin, after she runs offstage || James being the only one of the gang to call out and show his annoyance over Erin’s over-exaggeration about being the first in the family to go to university
3x03
Erin’s general expression and smile when the group are filmed by James at the train platform || Erin’s plaid skirt matches James’ plaid jacket || They’re standing very close together at the platform || James smiles at Erin, as he watches her trying to pretend she’s not afraid of the ghost train anymore || Erin looks up at James with excitment as the train arrives || James waits for Erin as they run to catch the train on the other platform || Erin and James are sitting across from one another and bickering (alongside Michelle) with Fra the snack trolley worker (and manager and owner of all the trains) || James leans towards Erin as she talks about hopes and dreams for the future, all under the guise of him allegedly about to sneeze || The two of them keep looking at each other, as they’re both equally the most concerned of the gang when they find the bag and it’s contents || James tells Erin to focus, as she’s getting upset over the bag and she listens || After James begins panicking as he’s watching the male passenger and the other bag, he turns back in his seat, still panicking, and keeps his eyes on Erin the whole time as he talks || James tells Erin to focus when she detours off on her argument and threats with Fra and she listens, before James takes over for a moment || Erin and James look like a married couple and their child as they arrive in Portrush, pushing Anna’s buggy and carrying the bags
3x04
James keeps looking over at Erin as he talks to the gang outside the school van || The girls are talking about picking up hot farmers in Donegal, James asks about there being any girls he can pick up and out of them all, Erin reacts the most from his statement || When James get hit by the van, the others surround him, with Erin being the most concerned || The camera positioning of their concerned faces, shows Erin’s face dead centre of the shot || After the girls carry James to the house, they all dissipate apart from Erin, who keeps a hold of James (with difficulty) || Erin’s the only one who carries James inside the house, where she places him to lay down on a makeshift bed || She is the only one very concerned and panicking over him (though a moment later, when it begins to downpour outside, the others show more concern than they had been) || Once James wakes up, she’s the first to get to him, her face showing major emotion over his wellbeing || She asks him questions to see if his memory has been affected, their faces close || Erin looks over at James, when he mentions he’s going to die a virgin || They both look almost lovingly at the wedding photo of Robert and Annie || James takes ahold of Erin’s hands and turns her to face him || James awkwardly and sweetly admits and declares to Erin that he likes her and has done for a long time || Erin keeps looking at James’ lips as he tells her he things she’s beautiful, a small smile on her face || As James goes to leave, Erin grabs his face and kisses him, showing she feels the same about him too || She moans briefly, as they’re kissing || Erin smiles as their kiss begins to deepen || When Michelle rants about Erin and James getting together, James stands up for their blossoming romantic relationship and tells her that it’s none of her business || They both look upset when Michelle tells them that they can’t be together || They’re right by each other when the gang sit on top of Declan || Erin and James are the only two who point to the photo of Robert and Annie, Declan’s grandparents, when talking to Declan, moving in sync unintentionally || When alone again, Erin sadly tells James that she thinks Michelle is right about the two of them dating but he softly let’s Erin know that he’ll wait for her to change her mind || Erin smiles in James’ direction as he walks away
3x06
Erin and James are both wearing their matching ring necklaces || Erin’s expression when looking over at James, after Michelle mentions they have a free for all, ride wise, in their Halloween costumes || Erin mentions to the group about them all dressing up as angels, like Claire Danes (who Erin knows James has a crush on) from the movie, Romeo & Juliet, and when mentioning the movie, her eyes settle on James || James smiles back and slightly nods at Erin, as they’re eyes meet || At hearing James being threatened to have a fight over the Fat Boy Slim tickets, Erin looks very worried about him || Erin nods in agreement to James saying the whole fight thing is ridiculous, the whole time she’s glaring at Mad Stab || Erin looks very worried over James during the fight (though she still does cheer alongside the rest of the gang) || At the cafe, James tells the gang, minus Michelle, that he blames himself for how Michelle is feeling, with which both Orla and Erin agree but it’s only Erin’s comment that causes him to react strongly to || Erin’s the first to help James when he gets into a fight with Mad Slab || Erin shouts for James to run for it, after escaping from Mad Slab || They’re sitting by one another whilst in the hospital || In the waiting area, they hold hands || Erin and James’ faces are tucked against one another as the gang hugs a distraught Clare
Special
James looks at clips of Erin whilst editing on the school computer, a soft, besotted smile and expression on his face || During Jenny’s mini play at assembly, Erin and James snarkily banter back and forth about what they’re seeing || James calls out Erin about her complaining about the agreement taking precedence over her shared 18th party, though he is very amused by her || James paraphrases something Erin said back in 3x02 to her mother, about stealing her thunder, this time James says it to Erin || James reads out everything that’s included in Jenny Joyce’s 18th party but as soon as Erin tells him to stop reading, he instantly listens and stops what he’s doing || James looks concerned at hearing Erin mentioning her party doesn’t stand a chance against Jenny’s, even trying to comfort her by telling her that what she’s saying isn’t true || They argue briefly on whether one of the cardboard people is Emily Bronte or Jane Austen || James walks closer towards Erin at seeing her and Michelle arguing, his face showing concern || James looks visibly torn and conflict with staying with Erin or Michelle after the argument, though he picks Michelle because of the whole cousin thing, which he tells Erin, hoping she’d understand || When outside Jenny Joyce’s house with Michelle, he lets her know that he feels uncomfortable being there, instead of with Erin (and Orla) || Erin, visibly upset, having found James at Jenny’s party, moves her face close to his when she tells him she feels betrayed by him leaving her party || They share a surprisingly intimate conversation || James gently strokes Erin’s shoulder with his thumb, as he softly reassures her that he didn’t want to miss her party, telling her he felt he was in a difficult position choosing between Erin and Michelle || The Erin and James caricature || They dance together several times, one of which James spins Erin in his arms || James records Erin at the party, where she gives a very eloquent speech to the camera || They share several exchanges of looks after he finishes recording her || James tells Erin that she should write that speech she just gave down and she replies that she will someday || They both get to say the very last lines of dialogue, together

i am the biggest jerin fan but it’s so insensitive of people to complain that they weren’t together at the end.
the show was about the troubles and growing up against the backdrop of war, it’s not about a couple or ship it’s so much more than that.
lisa did a wonderful job of showing us a glimpse of an eventual romance, a myriad of friendships and hilarious family dynamics all during the conflict. we’re so lucky we have tv shows like this. it ending with the good friday agreement vote was essential.
To the tone-deaf and insensitive Jerin fans:
At the end of the day Erin and James are just characters but the troubles were a real actual event,
The Good Friday agreement actually happen. The clips we saw in the show of the blood, gore, fires, reporters, showing clips of the troubles. (correct me if I’m wrong but all the news footage shown was real footage taken from old new reports)
I don’t care if Erin and James are your kins or comfort characters complaining about how they didnt “become end game” (they are the writer confirmed it) in the final seconds of the show doesn’t matter and comes off as highly tone deaf and disrespectful to the real atrocities that happened in NI due to the troubles.
What matters is the story we were told, that so many British people, people from USA, canada, all over the world finally learned about the troubles. What happened, what they were.
I am a going to echo again; we saw clips of the troubles; blood, injuries, fires. The tragedy. The atrocities. The sadness and horror the troubles brought to NI.
We watched the show talk of peace we watched the characters worry and fight over the Good Friday Agreement (like people realistically did when it happened!)
To be focusing on your ship is down right disrespectful to an actual historical event.
That effected real life people who are alive today to tell their stories, their experiences of what it was like to grow up in the troubles.
So have some emotionally maturity.
This show was never about ships, or romance, it was about NI during the the troubles.
It sent a loud and clear message. An important message.
