Erano gli ultimi giorni di luglio, l'estate del mio secondo anno di università e mi sentivo una dea scesa in terra. Avevo degli amici che mi volevano bene, una media accademica più che brillante e un lavoro che mi permetteva di godere di una certa indipendenza economica. Erano gli ultimi giorni di luglio, e quell'estate, fra un esame e l'altro, ero stata una toccata e fuga in Svezia, un paio di giorni Firenze senza chiedere un soldo ai miei, andavo regolarmente in palestra e avevo una più che gratificante vita sociale. Non avevo un fidanzato certo, ma non avendone mai avuto uno, non ne sentivo il bisogno. Ero in un periodo della mia vita in cui credevo ed ero convinta di essere destinata a grandi cose- chi aveva bisogno di un fidanzato? Erano gli ultimi giorni di luglio e stavo per partire per una vacanza che mi avrebbe cambiato la vita. -- Tutti abbiamo una "to do list" e, fin da quando ero adolescente, nella mia c'è sempre stata la voce "scrivere un libro". Più e più volte ci ho provato, ma il giorno dopo ho sempre cestinato tutto pensando "ma che merda"... Oggi ci ho riprovato, domani probabilmente lo cestinerò, ma almeno questa volta, forse qualcuno leggerà le mie righe.

Inflation (How does the market “know” more money is printed?)

Ultimately, in a “free” market, all prices are basically set by auction. It might be hard to see that auction at work when you go to the store, but over time prices are really about people “bidding” a certain amount they are willing to pay, and producers deciding if that amount is enough. If a price is “too low,” than the people who are willing to pay more will “bid” up the price. If the price is “too high,” then the seller will have to lower the price.

So, with that said, just imagine an auction, that takes place every Friday, to set all the prices for everything. If I gave everyone in the auction a million “secret” dollars, then prices would go up automatically. I’d bid my normal dollar for a soda, but then the next person, having an extra million and wanting the soda, would bid 2 dollars, and so I’d bid three, and so on. Even if I only gave secret extra money to a few people, over a few Fridays the prices would slowly but surely go up, even without anyone revealing the secret.
