The first book starting with Katniss waking up and Prim’s cuddling with their mom to Katniss cuddling with Rue later 🥲

Katniss is really in her head about Peeta and not understanding him, and he’s a bit of a showman but it’s because she’s so straightforward. She talks about how she struggled to not say anti-Capitol stuff/speak her mind even if it might get her hurt. She sees things that are wrong and she wants to do something about it but has learned she can’t, to protect her family.

Peeta is complicated, she doesn’t understand him, and she really dislikes that.

Katniss is so endearing to me, because while she describes herself as very literal, and focused on only practical things that will aid her in survival, and unconcerned with other people, she’s insanely empathetic (also way more intuitive than she gives herself credit for) and also, deeply entrenched in symbolism. Like, this girl never met a metaphor she didn’t like and didn’t get really invested in. Most people don’t give their love interests epithets but here she is. “You have a weakness for beautiful things and I don’t” girl your whole life is a poem that you’re constructing from color theory and flower motifs what are you on about??? Even Snow knows she’s Miss Literary Analysis when he sends her the lovers’ roses to taunt her. Katniss. Sweet summer child. Take your “kiss from the giver” pearl and admit you aren’t a “the curtains are just blue” person at all.

Even just from the first chapter there’s a theme of Katniss being practical bc of how she grew up versus kind bc of who she is. She thought there was no hope for Buttercup and she didn’t need another mouth to feed, but Prim convinced her to spare the cat and now she and the cat are at a truce. And despite what Katniss thought, the cat survived and it’s important because the cat brings them joy, is useful bc it can catch mice/rats, and is important to Prim even if Katniss didn’t see a point to spending time keeping it alive because of the way she’s grown to view the world due to very real experiences.

Katniss talks about this Lynx that used to follow her and that she liked the company, but she had to kill it because it scared away her prey. She’s very practical, but being practical also means that she’s often alone. Her love for other people and her kindness outweigh her rationality however because she’s willing to challenge the system even as a kid and she ultimately decides to trade herself for Prim when it wasn’t the “logical” move, but rather a decision made out of love.

Part a movie adaptation was never gonna do justice was how unhinged/out there Katniss' inner monologue was at times.
