“Scared of the Dark”

(You might need to turn up your brightness or turn off light mode for this one! I did my best to fix it but I got a little carried away with the theme of darkness, sorry!)

This is sort of a spiritual successor to my Kris Dark Room comic? I was still thinking a lot about being afraid of your room at night as a kid and seeing monsters and my mom’s advice to me about how to be okay with not seeing anything when you close your eyes to sleep. This comic was conceived post chapter 3 where Raise Up Your Bat got me thinking about Dess and Dont Forget being connected. I actually am not so proud of the writing on this so much anymore but I still really like some of the art (the isometric, love isometrics)

alright everyone hear me out

so, we all know that chapter 2 is the mother issues chapter. i highly recommend checking out this video if you haven't heard of this.

And ive seen people compare alot of Tenna's dialogue and actions to things that Asgore may have done and said during the divorce - not a direct comparison of course but as a way of going "So Queen represents the characters Mommy issues, maybe Tenna represents Kris's relationship with Asgore!"

And i dont think these people are wrong i AGREE. but i DO think theres a member of the Dreemurr household who is better represented by Tenna.

In order to get into why I think hes largely meant to serve as an analogue to Asriel, I've gotta start with how I myself came to this conclusion. And to do that we've gotta start with this Shuttah dialogue, which helps us realize that the Dreemurr household's darkworld is made in a way that can represent the Underground from Undertale.

Pretty cool! And this also explains why both Toriel and Asgore seem to be royalty within the Darkworlds - they are the owners of their 'lands' [ie the owners of their living spaces].

Which is a fun realization and all, but it made me come back to the rest of Shuttahs dialogue as well. Specifically these lines.

at first i was like okay, in this part Shuttah is just talking about the Living Room. So maybe Tenna is just in charge of the Living Room, while the Kitchen is the Underground. But no! Shuttah specifically says that TV WORLD was built upon the 'Underground' section. This dark world encompasses ALL of that downstairs space.

which brought me to my next thought. If i were to break down all of what Shuttah is saying here. It's saying that the dark world USED to look like Underground from Undertale - Until Tennas "Light" Overwrote it all into TVWORLD, recreating it all in order to be His domain. I'm especially interested in the use of the word light here. In the light world, it could refer to how the TV was only plugged in because Susie was staying over - basking the downstairs with light.

We also know that a LOT of what Tenna does is in reflection to the Dreemurr family, and in these same lines we are directed to think of the darkworld as something similar to Undertale. what could these same lines mean when applied thru this lens? Who could Tenna represent within this context?

Someone who rules over the Underground after usurping the past rulers. Someone who completely overwrites the Underground, basks it in light. Someone who could reasonably be called the Lord Of something- yknow maybe even smth a little similar to the world God. Maybe someone like Asriel Dreemurr.

But that's me getting ahead of myself. Lets talk about this scene.

I've kept coming back to this one scene where Kris talks to Tenna alone and its like one of the few times where Tenna says something that would upset Kris and he isn't able to just move on, because its just Kris there. No audience, no game to distract with. You get the idea that he has no idea how to interact with them and is almost Scared at the prospect - scared of fucking it up. And I've always read that as smth meant to reflect Asgore but now i wonder if it could also reflect Kris's relationship with Asriel.

Tenna talks to Kris like hes SCARED of them. like he used to know them well and still wants them to think highly of him, but doesn't think he can do anything that will manage to make them do that. He has no idea how to interact with them 'one-on-one'. He cares so much what they think of him, but his first way response when put in a situation where its just them is to Escape and Avoid them. He asks where their friends are, and then when that doesn't work he tries appealing to their nostalgia. And that REALLY doesn't work.

And to me . From looking at most of Tenna's behavior. He seems to love entertaining, and he’s GOOD at it, but his talents have been twisted into only being useful for as long as they can be a good Distraction.

I think this could represent what Asriel's Role became in the family during the worst of the divorce. I think he became the Eldest Child in charge of distracting the Younger Sibling. I think he had HIGH expectations for himself. I think he ended up basing some of his selfworth upon his ability to be a negotiator and distracter for the family.

Moving even further into speculation - I DON'T think it-d be crazy to suggest that Asriel could have some gifted child shit going on, if i were to take this further. In a family where so clearly Asriel's talents and accomplishments were valued SO much more than Kris's , despite Kris having so many talents and interests like the Piano and I'm sure they Also Like Computer Games.

I mean like just look at their room! Asriel's gotta be feeling some EXPECTATIONS there. And I think that fits SO well with this dialogue from Tenna. Doesn't matter how much praise he receives, its never enough.

That said. lets look at some actual Visual Similarities

Their attacks! Nothing too crazy - they both use Lightning/Electricity and Star attacks, the the star attacks feeling more notable to me.

And here's just a mess of little things that I dont put too much stock into. I do think its interesting that TV WORLD has so many of these Trophies? and Prizes? with stars making up the background. And of course Tenna sprouts flowers.

And of course there is the green room - where each of the couches obviously represent Asriel and Kris's bedroom and the difference between how they seemed to have been treated in the family.

And then of course there is the ENTIRE FUCKING UNDERTALE BOSS WITH A TV HEAD AND MINIGAMES. HEY. CAN WE TALK ABOUT THIS?

AND A DISCLAIMER. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT TENNA IS LITERALLY ASRIEL. I dont think Tenna embodies Any familial relationship within the Dreemurr household - I think his character and a lot of the ways he interacts with Kris especially is meant to be an analogue to how Asriel treats/treated them, and that is IT. He in no way acts like a Child OR a Parent. Thank You.
