they're uncomfortable topics, YEAH for SURE

because LIFE is uncomfortable. Death and suicide and sex and pain are straight up going to happen. not having words for the way it discomforts you doesn't make it more comfortable, it just makes you less able to reach out about it.

even more vital, you gotta be able to say words like "rape", "abuse", "queer" or "racist". cause we fought fucking hard to name those experiences. to identify "rape" as distinct from "sex" and "racism" as distinct from "acceptable behaviour" and "queer" as distinct from "invert"

like the function of communication is not to minimise immediate discomfort. we gotta be able to talk about stuff that's hard or sucks or causes difficult conversations.

I haven’t drawn in so many months 🥲 but I wanted to draw a piece to thank Line Play for all of the memories before it shuts down in late May. Thank you Line Play ❤️

Here is a video in which I ramble for a while about fadenquartz!

Video transcript: I have right here a gorgeous piece of what’s called fadenquartz. It’s a type of quartz. It usually grows in these very platy formations. And it’s called fadenquartz because “faden” is the German word for “thread,” and fadenquartz always has a white thread running through the center of it. Do you see it there, running right through the middle of that big long crystal?

And how this stuff forms is pretty incredible. It forms in very very narrow fissures in the rock, and it forms in areas that have a lot of geological movement. And so geological stresses and pressures will break open those fissures, and they’ll widen very slightly. And so you get a quartz crystal growing in those fissures that will be broken in half as that fissure opens up.

And so it starts to heal itself. Quartz crystals that are broken, their broken ends grow much faster than the rest of the crystal, and so it will very quickly heal itself. But it heals itself so quickly that a lot of microscopic little bubbles of liquid and gas will be trapped inside of it as it heals. It doesn’t start as this big thing, it starts as just a little tiny quartz crystal, about the width of that line.

And then the geological stresses will snap it apart again! And it’ll heal again, and it’ll get a little bit longer. And it’ll snap it apart again, and heal again, and get a little bit longer. And over time you’re gonna have your two walls on either side of this fissure with just this narrow thread of quartz running from one side to the other, that has grown between them as it snapped apart and healed.

And once you have that - it just starts as that thread, that’s that sort of milky white color because of the bubbles of liquid and gas - once you have that, then more quartz crystals can grow off of that thread. So now you have normal quartz growth happening off of that already existing thread, stretching from one side to the other of that fissure. So that’s where all these platy crystals come from. They just grow off of that thread.

But these are called fadenquartz because they always have that thread that is the initial line of growth running through them. It’s kinda like scar tissue in there, from when it’s broken and rehealed and broken and rehealed. Just very cool, very beautiful pieces that it forms.
