I decided to do a painting on Juneteenth since it just passed over the weekend as well as it becoming a federal holiday. Just like in the photo in our book where the artist had their art hung up and it was based off of the towns work history and how it got taken down because it caused controversy. I wanted to do something like this because most people are not educated on something like this and I enjoyed being able to make this painting come together. The history behind Juneteenth is that the slaves were finally free on June 19, 1865. I included the symbol of a fist/ Africa to resemble African Americans as well as the shape of Africa to connect the two. I used watercolor paint instead of regular paint to really give it a different type of feel and look. I also included little elements of green, yellow, red, and black in the painting by using my finger to dip in the paint to create a new type of dynamic. This painting is best for what is currently happening today because of the fact that although Juneteenth has been celebrated and it has been on the calendar it became more significant because of the fact that it was being considered to be a federal holiday and now it is.

Documentation:

I drew the outline of the fist/Africa with pencil and then went over it with black sharpie so that when I went to paint the colors really popped. For the first I decided to use black, green, and red. I then added Juneteenth Day and colored those in different colors. I added in the year and date that symbolize when the slaves were free. Lastly I added in colored circled patterns instead of painting in the background color of the paper because it makes it a bit more appealing.

WRITING, THINKING AND LOOKING CRITICALLY-

Jackson Pollock removed all imagery from his famous drip paintings because he probably wanted people to get the main idea behind his paintings and the reason why he painted what he painted. He created some of this artwork to not show the image clearly because he believed if you could go see the real thing in person all the time then go see it but if not then that was the reason behind painting it instead. Being able to express yourself and your feelings in your art allows your viewers to be able to know what you are painting or drawing as well as getting a sense of who you really are. I believe for Pollock he chose to not study under Thomas Hart Benton because of the fact that he wanted to switch up his style. He ultimately decided to start abstract art of human and animal forms. While doing this he switched up his usual coloring of different colors to only use black paint.

ART PROJECT – I decided to do an abstract line drawing of my mom. My mom is an important person to my life besides my dad because I talk to her just about everyday and we are just about the same person. While brainstorming what to create and what I can do since I am not as artistic I chose this approach because it allows you to visualize and see the art by how the lines are drawn to make up the features. Included in the drawing I added texture for her hair in the lines, I added in abstract flowers because she loves flowers and enjoys gardening as well. Her top is green because that is her favorite color, which still to this day I can’t believe. I enjoyed doing this assignment because it allowed me to incorporate some unique details about my mom

When we were given the assignment at first I was a bit excited to go to the John Ringling Museum because I always pass by it on the way to work and I always hear about the art inside of it. This assignment pushed me to finally visit the museum. The piece of artwork I chose to use for my assignment is called Abduction of Deianira by the Centaur Nessus by artist Alessandro Varotari or also known as Il Padovanino. The description of this painting is that it is an oil on canvas painting. The colors on the canvas are a bit neutral and they consist of white, pinkish red, green, and light brown to tan colors. There are not any particular shapes used in this painting since it is a painting of a centaur (half man half horse) and Deianira who is Heracles wife. I think the part that is the most emphasized are the two people in the painting and the fact that there is an arrow sitting out of the side of the centaurs rib with blood dripping down from it. There is definitely variety displayed in this painting because of the use of the different colors throughout the art. The framed artwork is 90 x 73 1/4 x 5 in. The image is 74 x 57 in.

The artwork makes me feel a bit curious as to what is going on before you read the description about what the painting is depicting. I think it evokes these feelings because it gets you to a state of mind to imagine what is going on behind the painting and why there is an arrow stuck on the side of the centaur. This is a great way to really observe the painting and to know what is going on.

The artwork that Alessandro Varotari presented was a tribute to earlier Venetian painters. I thought this was interesting from my research because there are other paintings dedicated to the Abduction of Deianira and the Centaur Nessus. In my opinion the others look good but I think this one that he painted was a lot more unique because of the way he illustrated Deianira and the Centaur.

This particular artwork is associated with the art style Baroque, more specifically it is Baroque in Italy artwork. The painting was requested on behalf of John Ringling in 1936 to be brought to the museum. The subject of the painting is that the woman in the painting Deianira was getting kidnapped by the centaur Nessus. I think this artwork tells a story and by this the artist wanted to tell that story through this particular artwork especially to give a a back story on what was really happening by explaining the kidnapping and how Deianira was being rescued that’s why the centaur got hit when the arrow. When I looked up more of the description/ story of the painting it is describes as Deianira let the Centaur take her across the river he started to try and kidnap her. Her husband Hercules allowed him to do this and her broke his promise. That is when Hercules jumped in the river and swam across it. This is when Nessus attempted to kidnap Deianira and she ended up screaming for help. Hercules heard her and took his bow and arrow and struck Nessus with the arrow. At first I was confused behind what this painting was trying to say because all I could really see was the arrow at first and then the rest of the picture. I just really asked myself questions as to why the centaur has been shot with an arrow, was he protecting her, etc. Varotari gets his message across by having the painting very exaggerative like by the way Deianira is posing and how you can see the centaur is clearly hurt. Their expressions in the photo gives the message that something is happening in the painting and you want to know why.

The photo I chose to display photojournalism is a picture of a sea turtle swimming with a fishing net around its body. The reason I chose this is because usually you hear about sea animals being caught in this type of pollution and seeing a professionally photographed picture brings more awareness to others that the affects of fish nets, aluminum cans, etc causes an impact on sea animals especially turtles.

The next photo I chose was in Islam there are guys riding on rides at a fair. The significant of this photo is that after ISIS was defeated in Mosul the people of the city basically celebrated and were able to return back to their activities which included night life, theme parks and celebration for the return of their city. A photographer spent 9 months during the battle and when he returned back in may of 2018 he was able to see how the city was. He was also able to photograph many events happening within the city as many of its residents were praising with joy of the defeat and to return to normalcy.

1. Journaling-

Unity and variety: unity is where the appearance of the art or condition is all the same as a whole. Variety is gives you more diversity and in terms this would be more than one color in artwork.

Balance: the achievement where opposing forces or influences come together to find balance especially in art whether it is symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Emphasis and subordination: in art artists use emphasis to be able to draw the viewer to a certain area in their work, this allows a focal point to be made. Subordination is when the artist will create an area of lesser interest within their work so that it can keep us from being distracted by the emphasis area.

Directional forces: artist use directional forces to influence the way we look at art and by this they create forces of implied or actual lines.

Repetition and rhythm: repetition is the recurrence of visual elements which can give a composition of unity, continuity, flow, and emphasis. Rhythm is usually associated with music, dance or poetry but for art it is a structure of dominate and subordinate elements in sequence.

Scale and proportion: scale is the size relation of one thing to another. In art scale can determined by how big the artwork may be and how big or small objects may appear. Proportion is the size relationship of parts to a whole.

2. Writing and Looking- Posterity- The Holy Place, page 72

Damien Hirst’s Posterity/ The Holy Place utilizes symmetrical design, the artwork is formed from butterflies. It also contains balance since it utilizes symmetry with the way the butterflies are placed. The idea behind this art is that it is supposed to be like stained glass from the different dark and light colors used and this is where variety comes into play within this artwork.

3. Connecting Art to Your World- I don’t really have a personal experience on how color has affected me but I don’t know how crucial using certain colors can depict the image you are trying to perceive. Especially when it comes to editing colors whether it is a picture on your phone you are editing through an app or editing through photoshop on the computer I think color can be very crucial especially when you need to play with the hue and saturation a lot to really get what you’re looking for to make certain colors pop by in the photo. A color scheme I would pick for my life would be mostly likely dark colors such as purples, blues, and maybe some type of gray. I gravitate more towards darker colors than lighter since I tend to like these a bit more and they look good depending on what you are going for.

4. Art Project- Artists Choice- the reason I chose to paint about Chinese foods is because it brings a significance to my life. Growing up anytime my parents asked my siblings and I what we wanted for dinner the answer was always Chinese food. As I got older and went to culinary school I started learning more about Asian and Chinese cuisine. Now that I am living on my own and able to cook more Asian food I also get to learn more outside of Asian cuisine and I have been learning about Korean food recently as well. My ultimate reason was showing that I have a passion for not only cooking but a passion for another cultures cuisine.

1. A known fact about me is I am not in any shape or form artistic at all. Signing up for this class should be a bit interesting and I hope to learn a lot about the arts.

2. When I was assigned the fountain I was a bit surprised because I was not sure what exactly it was until I looked at the other document to see what it really was.

1. Marcel Duchamp purchased a urinal from a sanitary ware supplier to be sold as art

2. There are about 17 copies of the "Fountain" by Duchamp.

3. The original works was created in 1917 and a replica was made in 1964

4. He was not publicly known for the art he created and only his closest friends knew he was the creator

5. On his artwork he signed his name R. Mutt and he came up with this name by Mutt came from Mott Works which was a sanitary equipment manufacturer, he altered Mott to Mutt.

I would say the way I thought about the art work was a bit different from when I looked at it because when I first viewed it the first thing that came to thought was it looks like a urinal but maybe it could actually be a unique fountain in some way. When I looked at the document and searched the artist who came up with this artwork it seemed like my first thought was right about it being a urinal. I don't see anything different within the artwork only that during my research it said that he turned the urinal on its side so I am guessing maybe the urinal is upside down that's why it was hard to tell in the beginning what it really was.

ART AND WRITING -A work of art that is hanging up at home is a picture of a black wedding. This photo represented colored people being able to get married. As far as I can remember the media used is a photograph but you can tell it was probably painted and then printed out. The use it serves is that my mom hung these up to bring culture into the dining room as well as the house. I think this photo has a much deeper background especially given the fact of the long history behind it as well. I do think it is a nice picture because it has tremendous significance and I have grown up always looking at this picture and thought of why my mom had it hung up in the dining room. Now that I am older I was able to ask her regarding her reasoning as to why she has this picture.

WRITING A SELF-PORTRAIT- I just turned 23 on May 2nd. I primarily align with being a female as my gender. I’m originally from Palm Bay, Fl. My ethnicity is Black or African American. Usually what I do for fun is sometimes on my days off I will go out to the Tampa area and usually go to some of the malls out there or try some of my favorite restaurants. I am not a member of an organized group. I currently work at Whole Foods Market. What makes me me is that I’m a very nice person, I am usually shy and quiet when it comes to meeting new people but after I get to know people I start to open up more and talk. I am always willing to help others. I have a passion for cooking and even went to culinary school.
