Strawberry and Watercress Salad
The secret to this salad is the dressing.
Dress the watercress on a plate
Chop in four or slice the strawberries
Arrange the strawberries on the watercress
Take 50ml of balsamic vinegar and heat it gently in a pan until it’s lost half its volume
Allow to cool
Once cool, gently poor a small amount over the salad
That’s it!
Service alongside stake and new potatoes crushed with sea salt and butter.…

I’m Back with Cod Fillet Wraps
So, let’s see if I can reboot this blog as I’ve been away way too long.
Cook frozen battered cod filets (or fillets – your choice) as per instructions on the box
Meanwhile slather a wrap in salad cream
Place cooked cod filet in the wrap, wrap the wrap and eat.
Simple, huh?
Enjoy 😀

I'm Back!
I’m Back!
Depression is not a pleasant illness to endure. I know, I have been recovering from a depressive interlude since my last post 6 1/2 months ago.
1 in 3 people will suffer one form of mental illness or another in their lifetime and statistically 2 children in a class of 30 will be suffering some sort of depression. The majority of these children will be going through this illness with related…

Edible Experiments

Glowing Flowers
This is a great way to show how water flows up the vessels in a plant stem:
Test a highlighter pen to make sure it glows under UV light. Yellow is reliable, but some other colors glow brightly, too.
Use a knife or saw to cut open the pen and expose the…

1 in 2000 babies born in the UK are born with an intersex condition or a Disorder of sex development.
As teachers, we all all come across pupils or students who have a sexual developmental issue: how would you cope with questions put to you about this?…

Dr Who
I’m writing this the day after the 50th anniversary programme of Dr Who. I have had several children discuss the show last week and am anticipating many questions tomorrow. I have been thinking of some points of Science I can discuss with my pupils (aged…

Word Equations
You would be surprised at just how young pupils can be when you can use word equations.
When working on the topic chemical change with years 3, 4 or 5 (US/Canadian grades 2, 3 or 4) why not summarise a simple experiment  as a word equation. For example…

When discussing nuclear fission and fusion with students they often ask about nuclear bombs. This is worth watching with them.

'What's my weight?'
A common question in class when the masses and balances come out.
Resist the simple answer by letting them stand on bathroom scales and get an answer in stones and pounds. Instead, use the question as a teaching opportunity to talk of weight as a force,…

These pancakes are much thinner than normal but how to make them?
Simple, use the basic batter mix but 1/4 less flour and a 1/4, more milk.
