TRIP,
Ā Ā Ā HIS MOUTH OPENS TO MAKE another apology, but the second his eyes land on kennedy, tripās features morph into an expression of mild disgust.Ā ā i really thought we were doing a terrific job of staying out of each otherās way before this, yāknow, ā he says instead, mocking the very first thing she ever said to him following his return to woodstock. and heād be good to leave it at that, let her walk away and ignore the flare of indignation that demands to be felt as she completely brushes him off. of course, it canāt be so simple ; kennedy quinn always has to get the last laugh in. she always has to pour salt in the wound.Ā ā yeah, girl genius, i have eyes.ā he scoffs, watching the cheshire cat grin spread across her her face as the pieces come together. trip wonders briefly if this is what it feels like to lock eyes with the devil. ā no. absolutely not. and even if there was, you wouldnāt be invited, ā the last part is added with no small amount of contempt. if kennedyās goal was to ruffle his feathers, sheās succeeded.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā getting her own insult thrown back at her earns a laugh from kennedy. itās a good play, since kennedy is endlessly entertained by her own self. āvery original.ā with van buren in the picture now, tripās mood makes much more sense though itās not the kind of thing she thought sheād be attuned to. she canāt say she feels bad for him though, canāt say that there hadnāt been a part of her that considered his getting kicked out of the band a victory for her. still, she canāt imagine the kick to the ribs this must be. ālooks like you arenāt either.ā she watches the rapport between the band members, how self-important they look. this far away, they look larger than they actually are, more important than she ever imagined they would be.Ā ācan you believe weāre in the same boat?ā though, if it was an actual boat, one of them would likely already be overboard, gasping for air.

CHRISTIAN,
christian couldnāt lie to kennedy if he wanted to. there was no mistaking the shit-eating smirk that crossed his face. kennedyās lack of protest probably made the whole thing funnier.Ā ānot always, but right now, yeah. come on, you made it too easy.ā he waved the apple-tini in the air, taunting her.Ā āfour words. i hate gwen stefani.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā sheād be able to make her life a lot easier if she just relented, but thereās not much she stands by except for her own opinions. "the only thing iāve got left are my principles.ā kennedy grumbles. she stands there, arms still crossed, deliberating. āi-ā a long pause.Ā āyeah, no, i canāt do it. i can lie about a lot of things, but i canāt lie about that.ā she tries her luck by reaching for the drink anyway.

DEAN,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āyou, quinn, are one lucky son of a bitch.ā itās hard not to keep the slight impressive lilt to deanās voice. the more they think about it, the more they wish they had thought of it first. it wouldāve meant they wouldnāt be in such a crap position now. they raise their cigarette as some sort of toast.Ā āone day, youāre going to pull off something truly spectacular and i want you to remember me as your first silent accomplice when the time comes. but getting out of this fucking place is easier said than done, trust me.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā kennedy laughs at that, clear and unrestrained.Ā āwell, what can i say? someone out there is really looking out for me.ā itās been a lifetime of wrong turns or humdrum with nothing in between; she thinks itās about time for something like this.Ā āspectacular, huh?ā she looks over at dean, wondering if she means it. ānah. iām not that kind of person.ā kennedyās not even being humble. she does what is necessary: nothing more, nothing less.Ā āwellā if teddy can do it, so can i.ā and now, sheās even got the money to do it.

TRIP,
Ā Ā Ā TRIP KNOWS HE SHOULDNāT BE SURPRISED.Ā itās not unusual for contests like these to invite old winners back as musical guests, hanging their success stories out like carrots on a stick for those competing. still, it feels like a kick in the chest when he turns a corner only to be met with the deeply sore and unexpected sight of his former bandmates. van buren in the fleshā or whatās left of it anywayā fresh off the tour and looking ⦠happy. really happy. upsettingly happy. tripās heart sinks, bile rising in its place, and heās quick to turn on his heel with the cowardly hope that he can make a clean getaway before the others notice him. unfortunately, he doesnāt see the body directly behind him until itās too late, crash course imminent, and trip has to set his hands on their shoulders to keep from tumbling onto his ass from the sheer force of the collision.Ā āĀ shit, sorry,Ā ā he apologizes.Ā āĀ you good ? ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ācan you watch where youāre going?ā kennedy snaps as she recoils from the collision. it takes her a second to recognize trip, but when she does, it only worsens her mood. āyeah, iām good.ā she shrugs his hands off her shoulders unkindly, rotating her shoulder just to be dramatic. kennedy continues in the same direction, still grumbling under her breath when she recognizes tripās old band. she turns back toward trip.Ā āhey, did you know theyāre all hereāā it finally clicks. it takes quite a bit of effort to keep a smile from forming on her face. ācāmon, no happy reunion for van buren?āĀ

CHRISTIAN,

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āthat wonāt stop me from saying it anyway,ā kennedy replies with a roll her eyes. she orders an apple-tini without shame; if sheās going to be having a drink, she wonāt choke down something heavy with the taste of alcohol. her guard is down ā because heās being nice to her ā but it turns out to be a mistake. kennedy protests when he holds her drink out of reach, crossing her arms.Ā āyou really amuse yourself, donāt you?ā

CHRISTIAN,
donāt tell him i told you, but christian was kind of having an amazing time at battle of the bands. the chance to get out of woodstock? shooting the shit with his friends? a few bucks to spare after some lucky hands at the mean-eyed cat? there was even the faintest trace of a smile on his face as he sidled up to the bar, and accidentally bumped elbows with someone else there.Ā āhey,ā he said.Ā āwant a drink? on me.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā sheād never taken much interest in nisaās band before, but once sheād heard an event was taking place out of town, kennedy became their number one fan. amazing how fifty miles can do so much for her mood. when christian bumps into her, her first instinct is to say noā and to include some sarcastic remark. but this far from the clutches of woodstock? kennedy shoots him a smug expression, accepting the offer before he can get a chance to take it back.Ā āwell, if youāre so kind as to offer.ā

JAMIE,
āguess we are. iāll definitely see you in hell, and i mean that as a compliment,ā he replies. jamie feels a certain urge to tell her about what he did to kem, because heās pretty sure kennedy is the only person he knows who would genuinely sympathize. but on the other hand, he now knows better than anything else that he canāt trust her with secrets. as much as he respects this true version of kennedy, jamie wishes he could get the girl from high school back, the one he had enough of a soft spot for to trust with basically anything. did that girl ever even exist? he canāt be sure now. āhm. skipping townās probably safer,ā jamie nods. his tone of voice is so nonchalant, the two of them might as well have been talking about the weather. āif you try to pin it on one of us, everyone else would just rally behind them. our coworkers are annoying like that.ā as if jamie hasnāt grown to care for half of them himself. āwhere would you go? if you could pick anywhere far from woodstock.āĀ
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā kennedy scoffs at that.Ā āplease, iām gonna live forever. someone will have figured it out soon enough.ā sheās not interested in dying. thereās too much of the world to see, too many things to do and experience. and if not that, thereās always another book to read.Ā āthanks for the compliment though.ā she nudges jamie with her elbow as a smile creeps across her face. she's starting to think that maybe there are things sheāll miss when she eventually gets out of here.Ā āand way easier,ā kennedy murmurs, nodding in agreement.Ā āgood point.ā it is annoying, but she wonders what it would be like to be able to count on that many people. she wonders what it would be like not to waver. it feels like an impossible feat. āi dunno.ā a faraway look settles in her gaze.Ā ā i always say boston. thatās where i was supposed to go for college. but iād go anywhere. i mean, iāll eventually go everywhere, so itās just a matter of where to start, you know?ā

CHRISTIAN,
the remnants of a laugh still ghosted christianās mouth as he headed out the apartment for a smoke break. there was still time for the world to combust, and if he was caught in the thick of it with a cigarette in handā¦well, there were worse ways to go. he focused on the street around them while the inelegant noise of multiple parties ā thumping base, shouting voices, sputtering fireworks ā washed the landscape behind him. when he heard another sound, closer and louder, he turned to see another one of the volume-ers. āyouāre not leaving, are you?ā was his greet.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āthereās a rumor going around that the worldās ending,ā she replies, tugging her jacket closer to her.Ā āwasnāt sure if i liked the company.ā a ghost of a smirk ā funny, when she considers that theyāre the only people she knows in town besides her own family. but kennedyās never been able to see a party to its end.Ā ābesides, i have other plans.ā she shrugsā like itās no big deal, like she always has things going on, which is never true, except when itās new yearās. a chorus of cheers sound from inside, and kennedy turns even though she wonāt see anything.Ā āthis isnāt really... my scene.ā

Ā Ā Ā ITāSĀ NOTĀ LIKEĀ EVERYĀ OTHERĀ PARTYĀ SHEāSĀ ATTENDEDĀ thisĀ yearĀ haveĀ beenĀ disastrousĀ exactly,Ā butĀ itāsĀ safeĀ toĀ sayĀ maxineĀ seldomĀ wokeĀ upĀ theĀ nextĀ morningĀ withoutĀ anyĀ regrets.Ā sheāsĀ alreadyĀ vowedĀ toĀ herselfĀ thatĀ theĀ newĀ yearĀ wonātĀ lookĀ likeĀ thisĀ āĀ soĀ pale,Ā soĀ voidĀ ofĀ color,Ā soĀ cold.Ā eightĀ yearĀ oldĀ maxĀ wouldĀ neverĀ forgiveĀ herĀ forĀ it.Ā

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā kennedyās never much fun, well, ever ā but especially around the holidays. despite all that, she used to really love the beginning of the new year, loved all the silly traditions and rituals. except, all of that is difficult to enjoy now that sheās out of a job. even if she had never seemed to like it in the first place, it had been her job, and her record store. sheās never been good with change. kennedy has just stepped into the kitchen when max offers a drink. she shakes her head. āany diet coke in there?ā she pokes around the fridge and takes out a can of soda, popping it open. āhave you got any new yearās resolutions?ā again, a silly tradition, but one she likes more than most.

JOSIE,
finding herself in kennedyās room was a usual thing for josie. despite the fact that josie never really considered herself someone who needed a confidant, kennedy had become something like that for her. to talk about the things that her friends at school couldnāt quite understand. josie looked at her nails, despite the fact that they were covered in nail polish, she still managed to bite them. she turned to kennedy and asked,Ā āthis might be a loaded question butā¦how do you find out who you are? like i feel like i should know who i am by now, iām an adult.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā theyāre sitting in a comfortable silence, kennedy organizing her desk, when josie breaks it. itās a difficult question, one kennedy finds a new answer to almost every other month. at josieās sentiment, she laughs softly.Ā āsorry, i donāt mean to make fun. itās just, i mean, iām only twenty-two, but god, i still donāt feel like an adult. and i definitely felt like less of one at eighteen.ā so much of her life has changed since then, and it still isnāt done.Ā ābesides, i donāt know if your identity is something you discover all at once. surely, you know a little bit of who you are ā the rest will come along in time.ā itās more wisdom than she expected from herself.
