okay but there is something disquieting about this urge to cast fan writers as altruists. they give us all this for free!! well, no.
they’re sharing
it’s a key difference in perception. fic isn’t given. it’s shared. it’s part of a fandom community— in which readers are also an integral part.
it’s probably inevitable mission creep from the increasingly transactional nature of the internet and fandom-as-consumerism, which was always gonna happen after corps worked out how much bank there is to make from those weirdo fan people
but like. fandom is sharing. i think we’ve lost that somewhere.

i sit down to write and suddenly i am the most distracted human alive. the chair is uncomfortable. my coffee is too hot. my playlist isn't quite the vibe. i need to research what victorian houses smelled like in 1872 for exactly 45 minutes even though my story takes place in space. and yet the moment i'm trying to fall asleep? every single sentence i've ever needed just lines up perfectly in my brain like some kind of creative parade i'll never get back.

what the whole "please comment on fic you like, it will encourage more writing" vs. "fic writers shouldn't be writing for engagement and validation" debate fails to really grasp, for me, is that comments shouldn't be boiled down to "engagement and validation" in the first place. by which i mean: comments aren't payment for a service, they are communication and connection. they represent the audience reaching back.
i don't write just for myself. are you kidding me? the point of storytelling, to me, is to present certain narrative arguments and produce or encourage an emotional response to them. That communication is essentially useless if there's no endpoint, no listener. To me, there is no point if I'm not communicating with someone. When I write, I am talking to a reader. If you've read anything I've written, then I was talking TO YOU.
you are well within your right to consume fic as ~content~ and withhold your "payment" out of a sense that the writer should be satisfied at having created anything at all in an unresponsive void. but please be aware that it feels really good when you talk back.

all of caitlyn's scars

right eyebrow
acquired during jinx's bombing attack on progress day

left leg
also a jinx special. a shrapnel wound from the bombing on the bridge. we don't actually see this wound after it's healed but I'm sure it left a mark.

literally every one of her other scars come from her fight with ambessa
right side of abdomen
stabbed by ambessa

underneath right eye
kicked in the face by ambessa

nose and lower lip
backhanded by ambessa

forehead
a gnarly headbutt from ambessa

left eye
ambessa's blade and caitlyn's sacrifice

one scar that I'm not quite sure about...
left cheek near the ear
I think this may be a scar she acquired off screen somewhere in between s1 act 1 and 2? her hair is in the way most of the time so it was hard to catch. as far as I can tell she already has it at the time of the progress day bombing, but doesn't appear to have it in her childhood scenes. if anyone has any insight on it let me know.

& let me know if I've missed any
#to be fair its not been THAT long since the ambessa fight#so we dont know how many of these will become permanent scars#but yeah#goddamn she's hot#arcane

for ao3 wrapped! 3, 17, 29
3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)? Deus Ex. No doubt about it
17. Your favorite character to write this year? I think from a numbers perspective, it would probably be Jungeun but I do really enjoy writing Sooyoung. Especially when she's a little pathetic haha
29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year? "And so Sooyoung thinks of Yerim and the dusty purple colour of desert cactus flowers springing forth desperately after a rain. Yerim and the easy way she would headlock one of them under her arm, sling an arm over another, and press a wet kiss to the third’s forehead with a lighthearted laugh. Yerim and how she loved to show off for them, riding backwards in her saddle, rifle up to her shoulder and fingers working the lever, spent cartridges falling in time with her horse’s hoofbeats. Yerim, who would smile so brilliantly whenever Sooyoung would hand her the canteen with last dredges of water and race forward to tell Hyeju that, look, Sooyoung really is that soft." - La Cuna

"you're the writer, you control how the story goes" no not really. i wrote the first sentence and then my characters said "WE WILL TAKE IT FROM HERE" and promptly swerved into an electrical fence.

one of my favorite things to do in limited perspective is write sentences about the things someone doesn't do. he doesn't open his eyes. he doesn't reach out. i LOVE sentences like that. if it's describing the narrator, it's a reflection of their desires, something they're holding themselves back from. there's a tension between urge and action. it makes you ask why they wanted or felt compelled to do that, and also why they ultimately didn't. and if it's describing someone else, it tells you about the narrator's expectations. how they perceive that other person or their relationship. what they thought the other person was going to do, or thought the other person should have done, but failed to. negative action sentences are everything.
