I watched the post S3 Sherlock cast interview 8 years later (kinda late I know)
And here are some interesting moments.
youtube
This interview was supposed to feature only Benedict Cumberbatch and Amanda Abbington from the cast. However, Martin Freeman makes a big entrance and it is implied that he actually was able to make it, though it could also feel like he simply was convinced against his initial decision.
Martin seems fine to just be around. He doesn't take the initiative to talk and the journalist has to urge him to talk. When he does though, he is fully committed.
Benedict claims Sherlock killed Magnussen because he was outplayed.
There is so much focus on TSOT compared to the other episodes. As soon as everyone states how much they loved this episode, Martin admits that he had his doubts about it and that he was very close to believing it was shit. He clarifies it proved to be great, although I am not sure he was being 100% sincere.
Steven Moffat is indirectly asked about the nepotism in the show and while he answers mostly okay, he has trouble answering why Amanda was chosen for Mary's role. He seems like he repeats himself vaguely over and over until he comes up with what he is about to say eventually; that Martin was asked to suggest any actresses and Amanda came up, who after all is so talented. Martin does not add much to this, except to agree about how talented Amanda is.
Martin makes an anti-protestant joke against Ben and Amanda almost jumps up like "Nooo, don't sa- fuck he said it".
Ben seems to be resolutely more at ease than Martin. He also tries to initiate some interaction with Martin, while Martin is definitely way more restrained. Might be that Amanda kind of looks at them left and right like she is watching tennis which adds a little of awkwardness, of which Martin seems to be more aware.
Ben and Martin have trouble figuring out what their favourite scene / memory in S3 was. Martin says he liked it when they were sitting on the bench watching the soldiers marching and Amanda pets him as a joke, implying he sounds old and boring. So then Martin plays along and jokes that his favourite scenes were also those ones he was rough and had violent thoughts in, when Ben interjected and said the marriage scene was one of them. Meanwhile, Amanda said her favourite scenes were shooting Ben and marrying Martin. And... well I don't know, all these make perfect sense, serious or funny, I shouldn't be having any second thoughts...but I kinda do. They are all sweet smiles to each other but there is something off, that I can't quite put my finger on.
Next question is what each actor has in common with their character. Martin says Amanda has a vibrant energy like Mary and Amanda herself says she kills people while looking pointedly at Ben and Ben says "she's quick-witted as you can see". Ben is lowkey anxious when Martin voices his opinion about him. Ben says about himself that he's a lot more empathetic than Sherlock, at which Amanda turns to look pointedly at Martin for a second (it is very quick and looks mostly harmless). Then Amanda says Martin is loyal and loving like John, which might have been the most unfortunate statement of all, especially since at this point it hasn't aged well. Interestingly, Martin fails to acknowledge the compliment graciously and he deflects by joking that everything people say about him always make him sound like he's a "fucking dog". Amanda adds he's also ruthless and I love how Ben seconds both descriptions. Still, Amanda insists on how good it is to be loving and loyal but Martin is still uncomfortable about it. At this moment, Ben tries to turn the attention back to him. Another interesting part is that after Ben says he is very touchy - feely, there is an abrupt cut in the interview, who knows why.
Then of course the discussion goes to the fandom and, inescapeably, fanfiction and fanart. There is the famous hilarious moment when Moffat says we can't tell how well endowed Ben is because "it" doesn't see the sunlight for long, which breaks Ben who can't stop laughing, even making eye contact with Martin, who remains stiff even though he smiles. Ben also says "I thought I was the one getting it", and yes Ben you are :). Anyway, Ben claims he doesn't follow much of it but he is appreciative of it. Martin is more restrained once more (which I find odd for his general naughty demeanour) and says he appreciates it as long as it's for fun and doesn't try to force itself in the actual plot (well what would be the problem if it did?). But the most curious case is that of Amanda, who speaks first and informs everyone she is not going to answer that question. Wow. Very interesting. It is the early sign that Amanda had a problem with Johnlock and it is sooo so curious coming from an actor. Amanda has a problem with the ship and my bet is that initially Martin did not but he gradually developed a problem with it too, for whatever reason.
Ending conclusion: This interview was uploaded in March 2014. Three months after Season 3. We know for sure Ben and Martin's friendship had deteriorated in the fall of 2014. But it seems to me things had started earlier and they were worsening gradually. In early 2014, problems had already arisen between them but maybe Ben hadn't realized it yet that well.

What even in hell is this?😂
Watching Hobbit premiere/interview clips is like opening a can of worms. I wasn't around in the fandom so have no idea what was happening in their lives at this point. This looks hella awkward tbh 🙊
Anyone can explain - bum pinch/Ben making Martin talking to his dad/famous pining Ben clip and now this....

hi calli my love!
for the trope mash-up (which i’m thrilled to see you’re doing again!), could you please write me a:
44. Drunk/High + 1 07. Accidental/Embarrassing/Unusual Turn Ons
please & thank you 🖤
Bee! 🐝💖
This took me awhile because although I LOVE all these tropes together, I wanted to try and come up with something new but then I couldn’t think of anything 😅 (if anyone else has ideas for this trope mashup, please do post them!!!)
I’m gonna go with something that I don’t think is particularly new as a trope for them but is kinda underused, maybe? Breeding…🫣
So, Mickey mentions that he wants to knock Ian up in s11 and Ian says that’s not how they normally do it. While he’s most likely referring to bottoming, I’m gonna pretend that he was referring to the knocking up thing and that usually it’s Ian pretending to knock Mickey up.
How did that come about though? Well, it’s not long after they’ve gotten engaged in s10 (no broken leg in this version) and they’re getting high in their bedroom. All giggly and happy. Lying next to each other in their boxers, eating snacks because they’re getting hungry. And Mickey’s eating too much too quickly and soon he says some kind of offhand comment that he feels too full, like he’s got a “fuckin’ food baby or something”.
And an imaginary horny lightbulb goes off in Ian’s head. Oh. Mickey knocked up. Hot? 🧐 Yes hot 🤯 because it would be Ian who knocked him up. Obviously he knows Mickey can’t actually get pregnant. And he’s like this is weird. Embarrassing. But his body has a mind of its own and he’s turning on his side, propping his head up with one hand and using the other to rub Mickey’s stomach.
Mickey gets distracted by the gentle touch for a moment but then he notices Ian’s got that horny look in his eyes. And Mickey catches on quick, “I said food baby, you freak.”
“Uh huh…” and Ian knows he’s blushing furiously but he just keeps talking because Mickey looks amused and this takes away some of his embarrassment. “But what if….”
“What if what?” All innocent, like he doesn’t know. Yeah, Mickey’s gonna make Ian say it.
“What if I…knocked you up.”
“You flunk outta biology at school? Not possible, man.”
“I know that, asshole.” He huffs. “But we could…pretend.”
They’ve never done that before. Pretending stuff in bed. It’s new. Kinda exciting. “Yeah? You wanna….” He pauses, bites his lip quickly, “put a baby in me?”
It’s…weird, embarrassing but yeah, Ian’s turned on. And Mickey too, Ian can see the horny look on his face. “Fuck yeah.”
“Not now though. Feel so full that if you touch me I’ll puke.”
And…..mood ruined.
But the next night, they experiment with a little breeding kink and find out they both kinda enjoy it a lot….😏

mickey milkovich x nude, radiohead
i don’t think that anybody can disagree that 1x07 is the episode where we learn the most about mickey milkovich. no, i don’t mean he showed any development or anything like that, but we learned something about him that made him significant for the rest of the show. something that never leaves, something that is important to him. in 1x07, we learn that mickey milkovich is gay, and we learn that he is willing to sleep with ian gallagher (even when his father and sister are in the house).
in 1x06, mickey kind of has an interaction with ian that we later see and are like, “yeah, he’s totally gay”, but back then it wasn’t stated that mickey was gay. mickey steals shit from the kash and grab, and he tells ian, “you know where i live if you have a problem” kind of instigating that ian should come over.
but in 1x07, mickey has stolen the gun from the kash and grab, and ian goes to mickey’s house equipped with a tyre iron, ready to take it back.
the “i want the gun back, mickey” scene needs no introduction or explanation. we all know what happened. we all watched in awe as mickey stood over ian and both of their breaths evened out and they made contact and… bam! they’re getting undressed, just like that.
later on, we are no stranger to gallavich and fighting then fucking. it’s something many people know them for, the fact that they’ll literally beat the shit out of each other and then immediately get on each other. but here, it was supposed to be for shock value because shameless utilizes shock value. to those who didn’t know gallavich was going to happen, watching mickey, the thug who had literally just attempted murder on ian, undress and fuck ian was surprising. later on, we can understand why it happened, but we were supposed to be shocked.
so, here’s where nude by radiohead comes in.
terry wakes up from a nap and goes to take a piss in mickey’s room (there’s a bathroom in there, he isn’t just pissing in it, lol). in there, ian and mickey are naked under mickey’s covers. around them, we see a poster of a woman and we also see a drawing mickey made that says “fuck love”.
so when terry comes out of the bathroom and looks at them both, he doesn’t do what season 3 terry does, he simply says “put some clothes on, you two look like a couple of fags!” and it’s a comical scene because, what the fuck, terry, aren’t you a homophobic murderer? you woke up to grunts and crashes coming from mickey’s room, then when you came in he and another boy are naked in his bed… what do you think they were doing?
so when mickey does put some clothes on, he puts on a radiohead shirt.
the shirt says “you’ll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking” and those are the last lyrics of the radiohead song “nude”.
so for those who haven’t listened to the song, here’s my analysis of why this song is associated with mickey milkovich and how it ends up foreshadowing his entire character for the next four seasons.
“don’t get any big ideas
they’re not gonna happen”
literally this scene. mickey caves and gives ian the gun back because lets be honest, it was really just bait. ian leans in to kiss him, and mickey has a look in his eyes where you can tell he wants to, but he can’t. he built this wall up years ago and he’s already cursing himself for letting it come down. terry instructed him to get dressed, and he puts on this shirt. and he’s trying to put this carefully constructed mask back on but he’s struggling. and so, he pushes ian away, “kiss me and i’ll cut your fucking tounge out”. there’s no malice in his tone, it’s a threat, but it isn’t threatening.
“you paint yourself white
and fill up with noise
but there'll be something missing”
mickey hiding in the closet, marrying svetlana, being a father to yevgeny, trying to act like the perfect son of terry. he still has this mask on and he tries to hide who he is but alas, he can’t. he loves ian too much and when he gets married and pushes him away, he’s still gay and in love.
“now that you found it
it’s gone”
upon being married, he tells ian that they can still bang. maybe being married to a woman makes him feel a bit more secure because although he despises it and it’s crushing him, he can keep his whole “king of the southside” thing. now that he’s married and unhappy, terry’s satisfied, and that’s all that matters- well, at one point it was. so he tells ian that they can still fuck, but suddenly, ian isn’t as eager and easy as he once was, and he leaves. he’s gone.
“now that you feel it
you don't
you’ve gone off the rails”
he’s out, he’s with ian, he has ian. things are supposed to be fine- but they’re not. ian’s unstable and has been hospitalized, and mickey breaks. he gets shitfaced and cuts his cheek and cries into ian’s jacket. that wall he once built up? the chest he puffed up, the posters he hung, the tattoos he got, they all mean nothing. it’s all gone. the wall and mask are gone, he’s more fragile than he once was. ian’s broken and it’s simultaneously breaking him too.
“so don't get any big ideas
they're not gonna happen”
this line is so mickey in s5, s6, s7, and s10. ian calling him and mickey running to see ian. he has hope. but no, ian breaks up with him, mickey is arrested, and when ian visits he desperately wants ian back. he tattoos ian’s name on his chest, specifically over his heart, and he practically pleads for ian to stay. then, mickey and ian are fleeing to mexico, and for a second, he has hope again. he fantasizes about he and ian at the beach, ian’s freckled skin being sunburnt, them swimming in the ocean together. for once, he can imagine his dreams being true. but they aren’t. he and ian are getting their marriage license, but ian’s hand wavers over the dotted line and he gives mickey that look and mickey breaks (…ian’s leg. lol). he keeps getting his hopes up and everytime he scolds himself for it because he just ends up hopeless.
then finally, the moment we’ve all been waiting for,
“you'll go to hell
for what your dirty mind
is thinking”
it’s in the 1x07 scene i’m talking about. terry instructs mickey to get dressed, he does, and he puts on a shirt that says this. and in that shirt, he seems odd. the confidence we see him have in 1x03 is no longer there. he doesn’t necessarily look vulnerable, but he isn’t the mickey he pretends to be. he caves and returns the gun, which was just bait for ian to come anyway, and he refuses to make eye contact with ian, but when he does, it’s almost coy? he’s ashamed. he’s thinking of things he know would get him killed and he hates himself for it. terry will end him if he finds out, and yes, he has the posters, the reputation, the persona, the tattoos, the guns, etc. but in the end, it’s all an act, and we can see it. the way he licks his lips, the way his eyes won’t focus, his body language says so much.

(TW: abuse, neglect, emotional manipulation)
Inspired by a post from @m4ndysk4nkovich, go give her love.

When I first started Shameless, I had someone tell me about Monica. They said she wasn’t a bad person per say, it was just Frank’s influence. Frank just dragged her down into the trenches. After her introduction I soon became confused by this statement. Frank is a horrible person, yes. But Monica had a choice to make; stay and be a mother or leave them behind to have her oldest daughter raise them in her place. She chose the latter. She’s a grown woman with agency and she left them. Left them to be abused by her husband.
Later, this same person and I were having a conversation. They sent me this scene and said how Monica had the best of intentions. At first, I was inclined to believe that. Then I sat with this scene, thought of the language that Monica used. Then I turned angry. I turned angry because I realized what a horrible scene this was. Her speech to Ian riffed with manipulation and her ever-present victim complex, trying so desperately to pass it on to her son.
I think Monica saw an opportunity and seized it. Excited that her son is as “crazy” as she is. She’s an utterly self-obsessed woman; saw a chance to create another version of her. She told Ian that no one was going to love her like she did. Told him that Mickey wanting him to get better and take his medication wasn’t love. I know that the person who spoke kindly of Monica would be furious if it was Mickey that used that language on Ian. Would have said it was toxic and abusive. Yet, it’s fine when Monica does it.

One of the saddest things about those words she spoke to Ian in that kind tone of hers was that they worked. Damn it all to hell, they worked. He comes home defeated, feeling like it was true. His siblings and Mickey didn’t love him anymore. He even said to Mickey, “You used to love me.” Monica got so deep in his head that he believed Mickey, this boy who was kind, patient, and caring to him simply fell out of love with him.
Monica doesn’t love Ian for Ian. She loves Ian for the ways that she sees herself in him. She’s an abusive mother. She’s a manipulative mother. She’s a neglectful mother. A mother who blows into their lives every now and again only to leave, behind her a path of destruction that they have to fix. Frank may have been more loud about his abuse. He may have even caused more harm to his children, but that doesn’t mean Monica didn’t have a hand to play. She hurt her children and never cared enough to truly fix it.
I sympathize with Monica for the fact that she struggles with mental health issues. But, at the end of the day, she chose not to take care of it. As silly as it sounds, I’m proud of Ian for the way he turned out. Those words no longer wrapped around him, he took care of himself for the most part. He did make a horribly grave mistake in season 8 and stopped taking his medication, but he admitted it, apologized for the hurt he caused. Monica may have dreamed and hoped that Ian was going to be an extension of her. But he’s not, he’s Ian Gallagher; a loving brother, uncle, husband. A man who works everyday to take care of himself not only for himself but for those he holds dear.
