Always and Forever
A simple Prince/Guard AU
Pairing: Shiro x Lance
Hands from onlookers clapped along to the lively music as it floated through the open square. The four-person band had taken up residence in front of the fountain, playing for any that would listen and eventually drawing a crowd. Soon enough the braver of the crowd began to dance and the sound of laughter joined the melodies.
The brown-haired boy’s own voice rang amongst them, smile bright as he moved from partner to partner. Hands touched briefly before they switched again until the melody shifted slightly and his new partner was stuck with him for a little while longer. She was older than he was but full of just as much life and joy as he was. When her hand gestured briefly towards his head, he was quick to readjust the hood. Amused green eyes sparkled but she didn’t say anything about the delicate circlet that had been visible for a brief moment. The majority of the people here knew who he was as he knew them but there were still plenty that didn’t or shouldn’t.
As they twirled around the woman’s eyes flitted off to the side before that amusement was back. “Looks like your babysitter is here.” She teased. Brilliant blue eyes scanned the crowd, trying to be subtle as they turned around and around. As always the music and dancing drew onlookers too afraid or tired to join in but wanting to enjoy it all the same. There at the edge of the crowd, he saw the royal guard.
Even without his unique hair, Captain of the Guard Shirogane stuck out like a sore thumb. “Guess he’s getting wise to your habits my Prince.” The woman said, voice full of mirth as Lance rolled his eyes dramatically.
“You would think he’d have some mercy on me,” Lance grumbled. When blue eyes looked up again they met brown. “And that’s my cue to go somewhere else. You’re a great dance partner but I bet you’d have way more fun with Shiro.” Lance hinted as she laughed.
“Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered although I think you like the chase.” Lance put a hand to his chest and feigned shock.
“Never. Say hi to the kids for me.” As soon as he was given an opening Lance switched partners, using the new dance to make his way towards the opposite edge of the crowd. Glancing back, he could see Shiro trying to make his way over, noticing Lance before his dance partner caught Shiro’s hand and pulled him into one with her. Lance would have loved nothing more than to watch Shiro try to get out of this one but he needed the extra time to put distance between them.
Giving Shiro a smirk, he adjusted his hood again and slipped out of the circle and into the small crowd. As soon as he was out the other side the boy ran down the bustling street. More than once he had to make sure not to bump into someone carrying boxes or a basket of goods they had just purchased. The further down the street the more he could smell the sea. Their kingdom had the largest port of any other which brought with it plenty of merchants. It was how they became such a center for commerce including housing the main seat of the Merchants Guild.
Running down the cobbled street, he slowed down and stopped to watch a large ship coming into port. Already people were moving about, getting ready. The docks were probably his second favorite place after the square. They had music here but it was different. Lively but not the kind you danced to. Not unless you were drunk and the songs the sailors came up with could make just about anyone blush. Lance loved it so much.
The shout behind him was enough of a warning that he didn’t even bother to turn around. Instead, he hopped over the low wall, half running down the small hill, the momentum carrying him. Lance thought he might tumble into the water. He was less than graceful but at least it was less embarrassing than falling. Been there and done that, cloaks did nothing but try and drown a person.
Hearing steps much closer behind him, this time he took off into a full sprint, cloak billowing behind him. Laughing he turned and opted to jump down the short set of steps, heading towards the ruins just ahead. Some kind of tragedy had happened long before he was even born but instead of rebuilding, the kingdom had opted to build anew around it. No one really came here save for the occasional child though no one was suppose to.
Boots became soaked as he stepped in the shallow water that covered the old cobblestone. It wasn’t subtle but that was the point.
Stepping off into another part, he took several twists and turns back to the stone that was still above water before slowing down, chest heaving from the exertion. Blue eyes looked around, peering cautiously around corners but not seeing or hearing anything. Smirking to himself, he put hands behind his back and hummed a soft tune as he climbed a set of stairs, not worried that the hood no longer concealed him. Inhaling deeply, he really did love the salty air that slipped into every part of the kingdom. It seemed to be the strongest here oddly enough.
Turning the corner to his favorite spot he ran head first into a very solid and yet very alive wall. Immediately jumping back, he looked up at the familiar and extremely unamused face. “How the hell did you get up here so fast!?” Lance exclaimed rubbing his nose.
“Language and I’ve chased you down enough that I’ve learned a few secrets of my own.” The taller man said, crossing his arms. Putting his hands on his hips, Lance met the look with one of his own.
“Well, that is completely unfair and absolutely against the rules. Yes-” He held up a hand. “There are rules. Which you broke. So you have to make it up to me.” Shiro didn’t look very convinced, the two of them staring each other down. “What? I’m the Prince I’m pretty sure I make the rules.” That seemed to get a small smile from Shiro who knew he was caught when Lance grinned.
“When are you going to stop doing this? You know they’re just going to send me after you. I’m the only one that can catch you.” The scarred man asked. Lance walked past him, pausing to look back
“You’re the only one I let catch me.” He clarified, winking before walking out onto the remains of what he felt was a bridge. He didn’t know where it possibly could have gone but it gave the best view of the sun as it moved down to meet the ocean. Looking out over the waves, he waited for Shiro to join him before speaking .“I could blame it on it being so boring in that place but honestly coming out here means I get to be with you.” Slowly he felt Shiro shift so they were barely brushing. Taking the initiative, Lance leaned into him, smiling as he felt an arm wrap around him. “Someday I’ll get to have you by my side like you deserve.”
“You already have me, always and forever.”

I Believe in You
Keith has always had problems with approaching people, or so he thinks. With his first real crush, he struggles with how to tell him or if he should at all.
Pairing: Hunk x Keith
“Shiro, how do you tell someone you like them?”
That had been more than enough to get Shiro to look up from his tablet, surprise evident in brown eyes. Keith hadn’t meant to blurt it out but they had been walking along and it had happened. Now that it was out there he couldn’t take it back and he could see Shiro trying to work out who it was and what to say. “Well-” Shiro started. “I would say the simple answer to that is you say it. That sounds cliche but it’s true. Speaking from the heart is always the best option.” Black brows furrowed as Keith thought about it as Shiro waited for the next question.
“What if they say no?” Rejection had always been Keith’s biggest issue. It was the main thing keeping Keith from talking to the person he liked.
“Then you accept it and keep moving forward. There’s no guarantee that someone will like you back. Rejection hurts and it’s hard but if you never try then you definitely won’t have a chance. Keith, you have a big heart and anyone would be lucky to have you. I know you have a lot of doubts about yourself but you are a good person. You deserve to be able to see that.” Purple eyes looked at Shiro and a small smile lit up a scarred face.
“Thanks, Shiro. I don’t know if I have the courage for that yet but I know you’re right. I’ve spent a lot of time pushing people away, maybe it’s time to try the opposite. What’s so funny?” Frowning, he crossed his arms.
“I’m sorry, it’s just that you’ve been doing that for a while now. I see the way you are with the other paladins. They rely on you and you talk more to them than you ever have. I know you’ve got this. I have to stop by Iverson’s office to discuss some things with him but later I want to hear about how this went for you, okay?” Accepting the nod as a confirmation, he smiled and headed off, leaving Keith to think about what to do.
He wasn’t sure when this crush had started though he could think of plenty of times he had felt it. Not that he hadn’t tried to hide it, even from himself but recently that had become almost impossible. Now Keith became very much aware of those times. Especially when he found himself sitting in the cafeteria, watching Hunk work in the kitchen. He wasn’t in love, that was something that had to come with time but he at least wanted the chance to get there. That was okay wasn’t it? Head in his hands, he wasn’t so sure. “Yo Keith, you alright?”
Pulled out of his thoughts, he looked up at Lance. “Oh hey. Yeah of course. Why wouldn’t I be?” He asked as Lance sat down on the opposite side of the table.
“Maybe because you had the most pained look on your face that I’ve seen in a while. Which means somethings up. Spill. Please?” Lance pressed when Keith hesitated. Putting his head back in his hand, Keith sighed.
“I’m just debating strategies with myself.” That wasn’t exactly a lie. He was trying to figure out the best approach but Lance didn’t seem to buy it. Looking away, he frowned again. “On how to...asksomeoneout.” He said quickly and instantly regretting it when a huge grin spread across Lance’s face.
“I never thought I would see the day that you would be interested in anyone. At least like that. Soooo who is she?” He prodded.
“Who said it was a girl?”
“Alright who is he then?” Lance rolled his eyes at the surprised look from Keith. “What? You thought I would care? Love whoever man. Long as you’re happy it’s whatever. So?” The black paladin didn’t answer right away but eyes went to Hunk who was showing someone how to cut something. Lance looked at Keith before turning to follow his line of sight, blue falling on Hunk. The Cuban boy turned around so fast that Keith was almost concerned for him. Desperately he put his hands up to stop Lance from shouting it out to the whole room. “Oh. My. God. Seriously?” Keith nodded frantically.
“Yes alright. Now shut up.”
“I can’t believe you like-” He mouthed the name. “Well I mean I can. He’s the nicest person in the whole universe. Wow. So I take it you haven’t said anything have you?” That scowl was all Lance needed. “That’s what I thought. Well, good thing I’m here to help you out.”
“Oh no, I do not need help. I can handle this fine on my own. Besides you haven’t been able to get a girl to say yes to you, the entire time I’ve known you.” Lance gasped.
“I’ll have you know they don’t call me Loverboy Lance for nothing.” He shot back as Keith scoffed.
“Yeah, they do. It was a persona made up for those shows Coran made you guys do. It was about as real as that fake science stuff they made Pidge say. Not to mention-”
“Hey guys, you got a sec!” Both of them immediately stopped talking, looking over as Hunk walked up, carrying a piece of paper. “Sorry, I’m sure you were having a riveting conversation that was not at all about to turn into an argument. But, I need a favor. We were going to make something special for everyone with the holidays and stuff but I need ingredients. Like several. More than I can carry by myself which means I need someone to go with me. Please, please, please someone come. Plus it’s cold and I am not a fan. It’s usually super hot back home being an island and all. You know what I mean Lance.”
“Oh yeah, I definitely know what you mean though it is cool to see snow. We don’t have that back home either. On the subject, I can’t do it. I have to help Coran with something but Keith’s free and he’s stronger than I am anyway. It’ll be perfect.” Keith gave Lance a murderous look that disappeared as soon as Hunk look at with big eyes.
“Really? That would be amazing thanks, Keith!” Keith managed an awkward smile as he got up.
“Yeah no...problem. Happy to help.” he said, shooting Lance another look. The red paladin grinned and waved at the two of them as Keith followed Hunk.
Bundled up, the two of them stepped into the chilly air with Hunk shivering the moment they were outside. “Yup still as cold as I remember.” Keith stuffed his hands in his pockets and fell in step with the taller man.
“I grew up around here so I'm used to it. Did you really never see snow until you came here?” Keith asked.
“Nope. Back home it’s always warm. In fact, during this time it’s actually our hottest time of the year so this is a bit of a shock. At least it would be if we hadn’t been through so much in space. After all that, a little cold is actually pretty tolerable.” Hunk said as Keith chuckled.
“When you put it that way, it makes sense. I’ve always admired the way you can stay positive no matter what. It’s helped the team, and me.” He admitted, watching his breath fog up as he talked. “Thanks for that.” Keith continued, hiding his face in the collar of the heavy jacket.
“It’s what friends are for, to watch out for each other. I know you’d do the same for me, you have.” Hunk said with a smile as Keith swallowed thickly.
“Friends huh?” He said softly, looking at the white ground and the way it clung to his boots. The hand on his shoulder stopped him though he didn’t look up.
“Hey is everything okay? You’ve been kinda down lately. I mean you always have this kind of scowling look on your face.” He said, imitating it as he spoke.”But it’s been, I dunno, a little sadder the past few days? You know that whatever’s up I’m here. I’m always here.” Those sweet words were almost too much for Keith. If there wasn’t a hand on his shoulder he might have bolted then and there. He didn’t think Hunk had even been paying attention to him but that was wrong and he swore he could feel the warmth of that hand even through the layers.
“I know you are. You’ve been there since the beginning and were able to believe in me when I couldn’t believe in myself. When I found out I was part Galra, you didn’t turn your back on me or say you didn’t want to go on that mission. You’ve always been there with so many nice things to say and I...it’s helped so much.”
“You’ve done a lot for me too you know.” Finally having purple eyes on him, Hunk smiled. “You always push yourself no matter what and you’re one of the bravest guys I know. I think you’re way too hard on yourself but even then you find a way to push through. It’s because of you that we made it this far and it’s because of you that we were able to get Shiro back. You helped me know that my family was okay. That meant so much to me. Keith, you’re not perfect and you do have some anger issues, like woah chill out sometimes, but even then you’re there for us.” Keith looked at Hunk, confused and heart pounding at how sweet this man was and he was so close. He needed to say something, anything to not look like an idiot.
“I like you.” Keith blurted out. Mentally he wanted to smack himself, that was the complete opposite of not looking like an idiot.
“Aww, I like you too man.” Hunk said, putting his arm around Keith and making him turn even redder. Moving away from Hunk he shook his head.
“No..I just..that is.” He made a noise of frustration. “I mean I like you as in like like you.” Keith did think about running this time, the silence between them nerve-wracking. Then Hunk was smiling and he felt his heart skip a beat.
“I know. I meant it the same way. Kinda figured it out a shortly before we got back to Earth. I didn’t want to say anything because I wanted you to decide for yourself when you were ready. I’m glad you finally got there.”
“So what now?” Keith asked, shifting from one foot to the other.
“Well...now we go and get the supplies. Maybe you can help me prepare stuff and we can talk some more. After that, just take it one day at a time.” Hunk said with a shrug. Thinking it over for a second Keith smiled as he put his hands back in his pockets and nodded.
“I’m pretty sure I can do that.” It looked like he would have something to tell Shiro after all.

You Are My Light
Pike learns the hard way that sometimes its best to leave well enough alone or you’ll end up hurt. Luckily Gyro is there to help take care of him while he heals.
Pairing: Pike/Gryo | Shiro/Lance
He shouldn’t have touched it.
It had been so tempting, almost as if it was calling his name. Was he really expected to know it would be a mimic of all things? In retrospect, Pike knew he should have known better. People didn’t just leave chests lying around in an open field. Every bit of him had needed to know what was in that chest, even if it turned out to be nothing. At least then he wouldn’t be stuck wondering for the rest of the week.
Now he was flat on his back with the wind knocked out of him. The mimic lunged and he was pretty sure that was it. At least until a sword came down, knocking the monster away. Pike was never happier to see the paladin in his whole life. “Gyro!” Standing up, a strangled noise of pain escaped from his mouth as soon as his foot touched the ground. It was as if his whole foot was on fire and he was immediately on the ground again.
“Pike are you-?”
“Behind you!” Gyro pulled his arm up in time to block the oncoming attack. The heavy armor was barely dented but it wouldn’t save him forever. He wouldn’t be able to carry Pike and fight off the monster. The same monster that was already making another round.
“Don’t worry, I’ll protect you.” Pulling out a small piece of parchment, he closed his eyes. “Shield of Faith!” A slight aura formed around Pike, the magic making fur stand on end. Readying his stance, Gyro held his ground as the monster charged. The thief was afraid that the paladin wasn’t going to attack, trembling the closer it got.
Holding the sword up, it flashed with a brilliant light. “Divine Favor!” The sword came down right as the mimic jumped, slicing through it. Pike wrinkled his nose, watching as it turned to dust and the wind carrying it away. A hand landed on his shoulder, drawing his attention. “Are you okay?” Looking up, Pike was pretty sure he forgot how to breathe. The concern on the paladin’s face, framed by the light of the sun was almost too much.
“Yeah, I’ll live to fight another day. Not sure I can walk.” He admitted, blue following brown down. Fingers gently prodded at bruised flesh, pulling back when he heard the soft whimper.
Gyro frowned. “It definitely needs attention. I used up the last of what I had with that attack. I’ll be able to heal you after a long rest.”
“Great. Whose bright idea was it to split up again?” Pike complained as Shiro offered him his hand.
“I know it’s not ideal. For now, we’ll find somewhere safe to make camp and wait it out. As soon as the sun is up again, I’ll heal you. Okay?” he asked, turning around so the thief could wrap arms around his neck.
“Guess we don’t have much of a choice,” Pike grumbled as Gyro helped him onto his back. “Thanks for saving me. Now, onward noble steed!”
By the time they found a good enough spot, the sun had almost set. Pike had started to set up his furs, leg gingerly stretched out in front of him. Once set down, his companion, ever the sweetheart, had soaked a cloth in cold water and wrapped his foot. He wasn’t quite sure what Gyro was doing now.
After taking care of him and setting everything up for the fire he had gone off somewhere behind Pike. Sharp ears could hear him rustling around, picking something from the sound of it. As the thief finished setting up the bedding his companion came back into view and knelt next to him.
“What have you been doing back there this whole time?” A nose twitched as he tried to detect what Gyro was laying out in front of him. He recognized a few of the herbs but a couple was unfamiliar.
With practiced precision, the paladin began to prepare them. “I know you’re foot must hurt quite a bit. I may not be able to completely fix it yet but I want to try and take some of the pain away.” Carefully remove the cloth, he pulled out a fresh one. Pike winced when fingers touched him again. “Endure it a little bit more, for me?” Nodding, ears flattened and claws dug into the dirt. It felt like forever before hands were tying the cloth on him. “It should start to feel better soon. I’ll get food started.”
Not trusting his voice, Pike settled for nodding. He couldn’t help the small smile when lips pressed against his forehead.
Once the smell of meat hit his nose, he was feeling better. Foot still throbbed but it wasn’t near as bad as before. It didn’t hurt his appetite in the least bit and soon his belly was full and he was yawning. Leaning against Gyro, he sighed softly.
“You should get some rest”
“After everything you’ve done, you should be resting. Besides, how are you going to heal me if you don’t?”
He felt an arm slip around his waist and pull him a little closer. “As long as I don’t do anything strenuous, we’ll be fine. Besides, how are you going to fight like this?” Gyro argued.
“Good point.” Settling into silence again, he bit a bottom lip before shifting. “Hey, I wanted to say thanks. I know I sort of said it before but…it’s just.” Gathering his courage he looked into brown eyes. “Really you saved my life and now you’re having to take care of me. I just…really appreciate it. I appreciate you.”
Fingers slid over his cheek, thumbing at the markings. Continuing, they slipped into hair and then lips came down to meet his. Eagerly he returned it, feeling a warmth that wasn’t coming from the fire.
When they parted, Gyro carefully pressed their foreheads together. “I should be thanking you for being part of my life. No matter what happens, I’ll always protect you. Even when you cause trouble. Thief.” He teases softly.
“You like when I cause trouble.” Pike returned as the pair laughed.
“Sometimes.” Gyro conceded. “Get some sleep. We’ll need to leave as soon as your foot can be healed.”
Settling his head in the paladin’s lap he shut his eyes. The problem was that even with that, sleep wouldn’t come. No matter how he tried to lay, with nothing to distract him, he couldn’t help but focus on the soft throbbing of his foot. Ears flattened when fingers touched them and he bit back a whine. The relaxed mood that had been cultivated was slipping away and with it his chance at sleep.
A spark in the night lights the way into the morning May your heart be filled with love and joy Let not despair make home within.
Where there is good, Where there is beauty, Where love and joy stand tall, Let not wickedness swallow it whole Stand tall, stand tall...
Ears perked up but the words trailed off and along with it the soft hum that had accompanied it. “I didn’t know you could sing,” Pike said voice soft, realizing Gyro wasn’t going to continue.
“Not sure I would call it that,” he responded, scratching fuzzy ears. “It’s silly I’m sure. Something I picked up from some Elven paladins. I think it’s called Oath of the Ancients.”
“Will you continue? Please?” He could sense the hesitation but after a moment he heard a soft sigh and closed his eyes.
Revel in the song of the sun, let laughter fill the sky. Without a torch of your own, it can seem so dark But let your beacon shine, forever bright For those who have lost their way Joy and courage shine forth, in everything you do.
I am strongest when I am with you.

Future in Your Eyes
“Be with the ones you love.”
That had been his order for their last day on Earth but they have to keep their love a secret. Now with the last big fight on the horizon, they want to go into it with no regrets.
Pairings: Shiro x Lance
“Be with the ones you love.”
That had been his order for their last day on Earth. It wasn't as if he didn't have people to spend it with. Keith would have gladly done so but Shiro had opted to stay away. The new leader if Voltron had his mother back, Shiro hadn't wanted to intrude. This was their time, time for all of the paladins to spend with families they wouldn't see for who knew how long.
So he had declined any invitations thrown his way. The only exception he had made was for Iverson. Even then it was only because he knew the Commander didn't have anyone. It had been a nice, long coming talk. By the end of it, he was emotionally and physically exhausted but happy all the same.
The sound of the buzzer pulled him from his thoughts. Glancing at the glowing display he ran hands through his hair. There was only one person that would come to him at this hour. One that he wanted to see more than anyone else.
“Come in.”
Lance walked in, hands in familiar jacket pockets. Shiro tried to recall a time when he wore it over his Garrison uniform but came up blank. He remembered how happy Lance had been when they had returned to Earth. The look on his family's face had been the real highlight. Shiro would have given anything to be able to be a part of that moment.
The former Blue Paladin had been the one to bring up the idea of a relationship. They had been dancing around each other for a while. Lance had been struggling with his attraction to someone that wasn't a girl and Shiro didn't think it was appropriate to be with a seventeen-year-old subordinate.
Except Lance was too observant for his own good. The boy had started pushing his luck and making a comment here or there. More than once he had caught Shiro off guard, causing him to slip. The small victorious smile that Lance would try to hide, let Shiro know he was in trouble. He still tried but Lance was also persistent as Keith could attest.
When they had been stranded in a cave, waiting for a sand storm to pass, Lance had seen his chance. Lance was so vibrant and yes maybe Shiro did crave companionship. After everything he has been through in the arena and in general, he had to admit he didn't see why he couldn't be a little selfish. They were in space fighting a war and putting their lives on the line.
So after a long talk, Shiro had given it a chance. With strict rules of course. Most of which Kuron quickly tossed aside much to Shiro's annoyance.
That had been over a year and now they were back on Earth. The only thing that had really changed was how much he loved Lance.
Shifting from one foot to the other, the boy gave Shiro a shy smile. “I kind of figured you'd still be awake but I wasn't sure.”
Smiling, Shiro moved over and patted the empty space next to him. Lance hesitated, staring at the offered spot before closing the distance. Plopping down next to Shiro, hands still remained in pockets. After a moment he pressed his shoulder to Shiro's.
Putting his arm around the other, it only took a moment for Lance to settle against him. Combing fingers through hair, he listened to the soft rustle of fabric. He could feel a hand moving against his thigh recklessly. “What's going on in your head, Kitten?”
Teeth worried over a lower lip. “It's really happening, isn't it? Soon everything we've been working towards, the whole reason we even started this whole thing, it's all about to be over.”
Shiro nodded. “Hopefully, yes.”
Brows furrowed and hands shifted more inside pockets. “Even though I know it's supposed to be all serious and stuff, we've had a lot of fun too. Seen things I do think I ever would have been able to see much less imagine. And,” he glanced up shyly at Shiro, cheeks tinged pink. “I would have never gotten to be with you.”
Blue eyes darted away just as quickly, the red deepening. “All of this has been a journey I'll never forget but…”
Shiro waited but for all the subtle fidgeting, Lance didn't continue. Instead, teeth were working at his lip again. Fingers gently tugged a hair. “But what?”
“But what if we don't all make it?”
Such a simple question managed to steal the breath from him. He had expected some nerves, a little bit of fear even. Not this. “Lance you can't think like that-”
“But I have to.” Lance shifted in arms. Hands had finally left pockets to settle on a chest as deep blue starring with more intensity than someone his age should. “We're about to go back into space after finally getting back to Earth, to fight some super powerful enemy that we don't know much about. I know Voltron is supposed to be able to save the universe or whatever but will we all come back? If I don't-”
“You will,” Shiro interjected quickly.
The boy shook his head. “There's no guarantee of that. I was in Red and it still happened. You had Black and you-” Lance sucked in a shaky breath, fingers worrying over Shiro's shirt. They had talked about all of this at great length but Shiro's chest still aches at the mention of it. The memory of when he had thought Lance had died on the field right before Red saved him still gave the captain nightmares. The brunette had admitted Shiro almost rejecting the new arm had woken him on more than one occasion.
“I don't want to go into this fight with any regrets this time. I know that how I feel about you is real and it's important. I don't care that we can't tell the others, as long as you know. I love you, Takashi.” Eyes looked away again and he watched as even the tips of ears turned red. “And I want to stay the night if that's okay.”
Opening his mouth, nothing came out as his mind struggled to catch up, too caught up on one word.
Regret.
He had left the man he thought he would spend the rest of life with, on earth. So many things had been left unsaid between them that he never got to take back. No matter how many times he said them in front of that wall, the guilt still ate at him.
The things he had meant to say before the battle with Zarkon, to tell Lance how much he meant to the then Black Paladin. They had hastily separated before Hunk could catch them, casting each other looks before getting in their respective lions.
Instead, his clone had done it for him. Had robbed him of a lot of firsts with Lance. Ones he could have had if he hadn't hesitated. If Allura hadn't been able to move his consciousness or save his arm? If she hadn't been there when Lance had taken that hit? They owed her so much.
“Marry me.”
Lance stared up at him, impossibly blue eyes wide. “What?” He asked, voice so soft Shiro might have missed it if he wasn't looking into that cute face. The same one that made his heart soar and ache. That had spent so many times helping him feel normal and reassured him. The same that had been stained with tears too many times. The one he wanted to protect.
“You're right, I don't want to have any more regrets. I've let too many moments pass me by, too many things that I never got to say.” Hands cupped a face, tracing over a cheek and catching a tear. He smiled. “I love you and I would be honored to take this journey with you as my husband.”
A face scrunched up and for a split second, he thought maybe that was too much. As soon as Lance threw himself at Shiro the anxiety calmed and he hugged back just as tightly. “Yes! Absolutely yes! B-but now? How? We leave tomorrow.”
“I know we do. Would you be willing to do it tonight? I know someone that can do it for us.” Shiro pulled up the holoscreen, sending out a quick message. It took only a moment for him to get a response. Reading the message, it brought another smile to his face. Shiro knew he could always count on him for anything. “It won't be anything fancy and I don't even have rings for us but-”
Pulling back, Lance grabbed Shiro's face and pressed a kiss to lips. Pressing their foreheads together he smiled. “All I need is for you to be there. Nothing else matters.”
“Alright, but we can at least change into something a little better. You got your new uniform I'm assuming.”
Perking up, Lance nodded. “Yeah I did and it looks amazing! I tried it on and I looked nice if I do say so myself.”
Shiro chuckled. “Good, then go put it on and we'll meet up. I can't wait to see you in it.” Nodding, Lance almost knocked the wind out of him in his haste to get up. He was about to leave before coming back for another kiss.
“I'll be waiting for you, Kashi.”
Those few words chased away any doubts that might have lingered, even after Lance finally left.

Fingers straightened out the black and white uniform for the fifth time. He knew Lance would show but he still felt awkward standing the hall in the middle of the night. Shiro felt hyper-aware of everything as he waited. He wanted to do this, was more than ready.
When someone cleared their voice he turned. “Hey, I almost thought you got cold fee- Matt!” Coughing, he tried to cover up the slip. “What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be asleep? We do leave tomorrow you know.”
Matt didn't even try to hide the grin, twirling a flower in his hand. “I could ask you the same thing but I know we don't have a lot of time. Pidge is already inside with Coran. Hunk and Allura intercepted Lance. I, am here for you.”
“Aren't I supposed to ask you to be my best man first?” Shiro teased.
Matt scoffed. “We both knew it would be me. Well me or Keith but, well anyway.” He held out the gardenia. “Felt like this would be appropriate.”
Pulling out a pin, he stepped forward and carefully attached it to the uniform. Shiro ran fingers over the delicate petals. “Not exactly as secret as I thought. Thanks, Matt.”
“Mom grabbed a few for a kind of makeshift bouquet thing. It's nothing special, they just barely look like she didn't rip them straight out of the ground but you didn't exactly give us any warning. You'll see them when you see Lance. Oh and mom said to tell you that once this is all over with, that you two have to have another wedding so they can be there.”
Getting choked up he nodded. “Of course.”
Matt patted him on the back. “Come on, before they show up. Bad luck to see the bride before the wedding.”
As soon as they stepped inside Coran immediately pulled him into a bone crushing hug. “I can't believe the day has finally come.” Matt tried to console the suddenly weeping Altean. Romelle looked incredibly clueless behind him.
“I thought this was a good thing? Is something bad going to happen? Is he not showing up?” She asked.
Matt laughed. “Oh no, he is. He would be here already if we hadn't caught him first.
“Allura says they're coming here now. We need to get Shiro into place.” Pidge urged.
Coran sat him back on his feet and clasped his shoulders. “I'm so proud of you my boy, of both of you. You both've been through a lot but I'm grateful to be here for this moment. Well, go on them.” Stepping back he twirled his mustache. “As a great leader once said, go be great.”
Letting Matt lead him towards the front of the room, he took a deep breath.
“Nervous?”
Shiro wiped a stray tear away and shook his head. “I've never been more ready. Thank you for agreeing to do this. It means a lot to me, Keith.”
The former Red Paladin's face broke out into a smile as they embraced. “I'm honored you wanted me to do this. Seeing you this happy is the best thing I could ask for. You deserve it and I'm grateful I get to be here for it.”
“We're here!” Allura rushed into the room, smoothing her pink uniform down and adjusting her hair. “Oh, you're already in place, perfect. Should I let Hunk know to bring him in?” She asked.
Exchanging a look, Keith nodded. “Yeah, we're ready.”
Just as Allura joined Coran and Romelle, the door opened and Shiro forgot about all else.
The uniform was just like everyone else's but it somehow managed to look like perfection on Lance. The blue seemed to magnify his eyes and Shiro was pretty sure he had forgotten how to breathe. Cheeks were tinged pink though Shiro caught the look of surprise when eyes landed on Keith. His heart skipped a beat when they turned on him again.
A few gardenias were clenched in a trembling hand, the other wrapped around Hunk's arm. Someone had placed a spider lily behind one ear.
“You look amazing,” Shiro said in awe, looking Lance up and down. Holding out his hand, Lance took it, still holding onto the poor flowers as Hunk moved aside. “I can't believe I'm this lucky.”
“I can't believe mullet here is the person you were talking about.” Lance winked at Keith. “Then again there isn't anyone better.”
Keith made a show of rolling his eyes, a small smile playing over lips. “Let's just get this started already.” When they both nodded, he continued. “Earlier today, I told you that I knew you would always have my back. I also said that you know exactly who you are and what you have to offer. I meant it. I know that sometimes you have doubts, but there is no one I am more proud to have the chance to marry Shiro too.”
Lance choked back tears. “Keith…”
“Tomorrow, we start the last part of our journey as defenders of the universe but today the two of you start the beginning of your own journey. Would you like to say your own vows?”
Nodding enthusiastically, Lance handed Hunk his flowers. Taking both of Shiro's hands, squeezed them rightly. “Kashi I admired you for a long time. I had this image of what I thought you were. When I met you, when I got to actually know you I saw all the flaws hidden underneath and I realized,”
Lance smiled through the tears. “That you were so much better than I imagined. You are my hero but not for the childish reasons from before. Because you are so strong even when you think you aren't. Because you always put others first and because you never give up, no matter how hard it gets. You inspire me and encourage me and I will never forget everything you've done for me. Thank you, for loving me.”
Hands shaking, Shiro squeezed the warm hands in his own. “L-Lance-” his voice broke and he swallowed thickly before trying again. “Lance your light is so bright and you have come so far from the person I first met. Anytime it feels like the darkness might swallow me up, I look for you. I thought seeing space would be the highlight of my life but I stand by what I said, you are cooler than space. You are my northern star. No matter what, all I have to do is look to you to know I'm home.”
Keith cleared his throat, voice a little rougher than before. “Let's continue. Do you, Lance Charles McClain, take Takashi Shirogane to be your husband, no matter what the future might throw at you?”
Lance smiled. “I do.”
“And do you Takashi Shirogane take Lance Charles McClain to be your husband, no matter how many long-winded conversations he pulls you into. Regardless of how much whining he does and the bad pick up lines-”
“Keith!”
Shiro laughed. “I absolutely do.”
Keith grinned. “Then it is my greatest pleasure to declare you husband and husband. You may kiss.”
Wrapping arms around Lance, he pulled a smaller frame against his. Hands rested against his chest as he pressed their foreheads together. Lance chewed on a bottom lip, smiling with an intensity that Shiro was sure matched his own. He wasn't sure who made the first move or if they had just done it together. The only thing he remembered was the feeling of warm lips against his own and the cheering of their friends around them.
Neither of them knew what tomorrow would bring, but they would face it together.

Want You By My Side
Blaytz finds Daibazaal to be so boring except for a particular servant that’s caught his eye. Now if only he could find him before the new deca-phoeb starts.
Pairing: Blaytz x Galra Servant
It was all so unbelievably monotone. Purple and red decorated nearly every part of Daibazaal including the very planet itself. The whole place was so uniform and so militaristic. Sometimes Blaytz wanted to throw random color capsules everywhere just to see what would happen. Probably cause a riot or something knowing these people, they wouldn’t know how to handle that much fun. Sure Zarkon was nice but even he had a certain controlled mannerism to him as if he was afraid to let go or didn’t know how to. He seemed the most animated around Honerva. The Nalquodian only hoped she brought out a real personality in the guy. Alfor was so different that he didn’t know how his friend did it other than having the patience of a Weblum.
Looking across the room, he watched the servants as they moved about their various tasks. Eyes watched one in particular, the same one he remembered from his first visit to Daizabaal after becoming a Paladin.
Eyes met his own and Blaytz was about to wink at him before Alfor decided to lean forward, right in his line of sight, the biggest smile on his face. “What do you think Blaytz?” Glancing around the table, everyone was staring at him now, waiting for an answer to a question he hadn’t even heard. Eyes flitted to where the servant had been but there was nothing but empty space now.
“Uh yeah, I think it’s a great idea.” Shrugging, he caught that knowing look from Trigel that he ignored. The king had already turned back to Zarkon, crossing his arms with a look of satisfaction.
“You see? Everyone wants you to be there. You cannot miss the annual Capho Festival." He said firmly. "We shall welcome the new deca-phoeb together. As Paladins-in-arms and as friends. You cannot possibly say no.” Blaytz put an arm over his chair, slouching as he tuned the conversation out again.
When he caught movement out of his peripheral again he followed the arm up to see the same servant he had been watching a moment ago. Eyes meeting again, Blaytz smiled and tipped his head in a silent thanks. The blush was almost invisible against pale violet skin but he still caught it along with the smile before the servant walked away.
As soon as the meeting ended, they all separated with a promise to meet up in a couple of quintant for the Festival. It would be going on for an entire movement as per tradition. The new deca-phoeb would be starting at the end of the first quintant of it.
Blaytz lingered, telling himself it was only because Alfor was and he liked to watch his friend’s back. They all knew it wasn’t because of a lack of trust in the Galra. Alfor had done it for Blaytz when it had mattered the most. Blaytz had spent his life doing the same until it became something of a habit.
Leaning on the balcony he watched his friend visit with Honerva.  Zarkon walking ahead to give them time to themselves.
“Is everything alright?” Trigel joined him, watching Alfor gestured animatedly about something while Honerva laughed. “You seemed distracted during the meeting.”
“Hey you know me, I find those meetings boring more often than not. The atmosphere does that to me. It’s so dry here.” Shrugging, he turned around and leaned against the railing. “You know me, I love excitement this is-” He gestured with a hand. “So not it.”
“It is different from home, I must admit though I do find it fascinating. I believe there is one in particular that you also find fascinating.” She said, gesturing with her head again. Glancing back, he smiled without meaning to. The soft laugh signaled he had was caught and he gave her a sour look. “I overheard Alfor ask if it would be alright to have some of the servant class assist with preparation and service for the Capho festival. I may have mentioned to the Staff Captain that we want only the best and that there is a particular set of servants that have more than proven themselves.”
Trigel didn’t believe in the Galran’s hierarchy either but unlike him, she was better at playing the system. Looking back at the servant, he grinned. “Thanks Tri.”
-------------------------
Everything was a flurry of activity but Blaytz loved it. Altea was a planet he could spend all of his time on, it was so full of color and life. Throw everything underwater and it might have been almost exactly like Nalquod. Granted he had long since grown to enjoy the warmth of the sun against skin.
Dodging children he wrapped an arm around Coran without stopping, watching him check things off a list. “Yo Coran the gorgeous man don’t suppose the rest of the Pirate Polychoral are going to show up to the festival? I haven’t gotten to hear you guys in ages.” Twirling a mustache, Coran pretended to think it over as if he hadn’t known the answer phoebs ago.
“The gang is rather busy these days but.” He looked from side to side, leaning into Blaytz. “We might be able to get everyone together for a show or two.” He hinted. Patting the Altean heartily on the back blue paladin laughed.
“Well, I’ll make sure to keep an ear out then. Wouldn’t want to miss that for anything. To the new deca-phoeb friend!” Strolling down the street, he didn’t even hesitate to walk into the castle. Even more, people were working diligently to get everything ready. They would be getting guests within a few varga and everyone was excited.
The galra servants were the ones that stood out like sore thumbs and not just because of their looks. They seemed almost perplexed by the relaxed nature of everything. He didn’t see who he was really interested in but Trigel had assured him the man was here somewhere.
“Blaytz!” He turned just in time to be pulled into a crushing hug by the overly friendly Rygnirathian.
“ Gyrgan! Good to see you too. Kinda crushing my chest though, do you mind?” He said with a slight wheeze. Even if he didn’t quite need the air, the yellow paladin always seemed to forget his own strength. Thankfully he didn’t have as squishy of an anatomy like Alteans did.
Speaking of Alteans, he waved at Alfor as he joined them with the rest of their party. Opening his arms to give another hug, Zarkon was quick to extend a hand. Accepting the gesture without question, they clasped arms before he put a hand on Trigel’s shoulder as she bowed slightly to him. Alfor tried to do what Zarkon had but Gyrgan didn’t give him the chance to get out of the hug. At least this one didn’t sound too painful.
“Always a great pleasure to see you too Gyrgan. Truly your heart is as strong as your muscles.” Alfor said, not without the same slight wheeze Blaytz had. The Nalquodian noted with some amusement that Alfor was actually more so out of breath as he straightened clothing out once back on the ground.
“Getting old are we?” He teased as Alfor cleared his throat.
“Looking for someone before we arrived, dear friend?” Alfor asked casually as he fixed his sleeve. It turned into a smug grin at the look of shock on a blue face.
“Quiznack does everyone know?” He asked, rubbing his head.
“I don’t know. Are we waiting for someone else?” Gyrgan asked and Zarkon looked just as confused.
“I am afraid I too do not know. What are you talking about Alfor?” He asked as Blaytz desperately make gestures behind him to shut it. Alfor for his part laughed it off.
“It is nothing, I am merely teasing him and he knows it. Come let us leave these people to their work. I must show you some things I have been working on while I still can. Once the festival starts Melenor will never forgive me if I try to work during it.”
They only managed to escape because the queen came into the hanger and dragged Alfor away. They all knew that was their signal to disperse and enjoy what Altea had to offer.
If it was lively before it was even more so now with music and laughter both in and outside of the palace. As much as he wanted to stay in the palace, Blaytz had always been a paladin of the people. He wasn’t royalty like Alfor or Zarkon nor a  leader like Gyrgan was for his tribe. Even Trigel was a royal researcher. He was just a regular guy that had accidentally saved and befriended a then prince turned king. Out in the square and down the side streets with the kids and commoners, that was where he felt the most comfortable.
As the suns set lower in the sky, he knew he needed to find the person he wanted to see the most. Considering he hadn’t seen any of the Galran servants around they most likely had been stuck at the palace. That was probably a big improvement from what they had to deal with so that gave him some comfort.
The mood inside the palace was far more formal, filled with the higher-ups from various allied planets. At least Zarkon was dancing. From the look on his face, he wasn’t sure how he felt about the activity. Every time he looked at Honerva’s smiling face, his own would soften and he’d keep going. Maybe she was bringing out a personality in him after all.
Continuing he walked into the kitchen which confused the Galra staff who didn’t expect anyone but other servants or staff to be in there. Hys smacked his hand with a spoon when he reached for one of the desserts. “Oh no you don’t, you know the rules. Not until the new deca-phoeb starts are you getting one of those. Shoo before I smack you again.” She said as he rubbed his poor hand.
“Man I can’t believe at your age you still have reflexes like that. Woah!” Dodge the spoon, he made a break for it before she could make good on her promise. He hadn’t seen the person he wanted in there anyway. In fact, he couldn’t seem to find him anywhere. The more time that passed the more disappointed he was until he had to give up.
Slipping away from the party he found a balcony to sulk on. Looking down at the lights, he could hear the sounds of the celebration. It brought a slight smile to his face to see the people so happy and knowing he was helping to protect that.
“E-excuse me.”
The voice was so soft he almost missed it but it caught his attention all the same. Standing shyly was the one person he had wanted to see this entire time. “I apologize but Ms. Trigel asked me to bring these to you. I’m will leave it for you and your guest.”
“Guest?” Looking at the tray, he realized it had two glasses on it. Trigel was a smart one and he owed her so much. Taking the glasses, he set one down on the railing before gently catching the man’s arm. “Actually, I….what’s your name?” Surprised, the man hesitated on if he should answer and Blaytz was almost afraid he wouldn’t.
“Bakki. My name is Bakki.”
“Bakki.  I like it. Bakki I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind being my guest?” He asked, holding out the glass to the man. “Honestly I have been all over this place looking for you. I know this might seem weird and all but-”
“I would love to.”
“-but I’ve been wanting to ask you for a while and...what?” A hand gently took the glass from his hand as a tray was set aside.
“You were the first person to talk to me, to notice me. To continue to notice me.” He said, that blush back on violet cheeks. “I know I’m here because you asked for me to be and I’m grateful for that. It’s so nice here. Not at all like back home. There it’s so-”
“Dry?” Blatyz asked, feeling a warmth in his chest at the soft laugh that earned.
“Yes, dry.”
The sudden cheer of the people caught both of their attention as they looked over the balcony at the set up below. Alfor and Melenor had appeared, both of them smiling and waving to the adoring citizens.
“To those who come from beyond our planet, we thank you for joining us in bringing in a new deca-phoeb. It has not been without its troubles and its pains but it has also brought much to be happy and thankful for. We mourn those that could not be with us this night and take comfort in those we can. We will never forget them, but we will move forward as we always do and continue to bring peace and prosperity. Through unity and through friendship, we will achieve this goal. We are all very different and yet similar beings in a universe much bigger than ourselves. Beings trying to do our best. May this deca-phoeb be even better than the last and may we never lose sight of who we are!”
“He’s an impressive leader,” Bakki said with a small smile.
“He sure is. Looks like the new deca-phoeb will be here soon.” Blaytz said, noticing Gyrgan and Trigel below them, sitting beside one another. He knew she liked him but Gyrgan wasn’t ready for another relationship, not as he still mourned the one he had lost. “What do you hope to see in the coming one?”
“Honesty, I would like freedom for my people. Being here, it makes me want that even more. Emperor Zarkon is a good man but the classism is something that needs to be removed. My people deserve to be as happy as the Alteans and your own. I admit I don’t know anything about your people. Still, from watching you, seeing you among the citizens here, I have a feeling they are very happy people. Oh, the countdown is starting.”The both of them looked at the large clock counting down the ticks.
As it was about to hit the last number, Blaytz leaned in and pressed a kiss to Bakki’s cheek, catching the man off guard. The crowd cheers as Alfor did the same to Melenor though she wasn’t so quick to let him get away. “Run away with me then. Change doesn’t come overnight but it’s like he said, we achieve it through unity. Let me help you.”
Looking out at the crowd as the sky lit up with lights, Bakki didn't need to think about it for long before he nodded. “To the new deca-phoeb, whatever it may bring I’ll face it with you.”

To the Moon and Back
Kolivan learns about an Earth holiday for couples. After so much time apart, he wants to show his mate how much he is cherished.
Pairing: Kolivan x Keith
“So how's the game plan coming along? Got everything you need?” Blue eyes stayed glued in the red paper. A tongue poked out as the scissors cut through it. With one final snip, the excess fell away and he held up the paper heart in triumph. Kolivan didn’t look up from the report but a head tilted at the question.
The red paladin had been destroying colored paper every since he came into the break room. His companion had been here even before Kolivan. The smell of something sweet had been filling the small room recently. Utensils against bowls made for an acceptable level of background noise.
“It's great! I've already got all the ingredient for dinner tomorrow. Thanks to you of course. Can't forget the candy and I am totally doing breakfast in bed. Put together the playlist too. Really set the mood if you know what I mean. I was originally thinking candles but after the last time, I think I'll find an alternative.” Lance said, putting the heart on the table with the other red, pink, and white ones scattered before him.
Hunk nodded along, pulling on oven mitts right as the timer went off. “Pretty sure that smell will never go away. What about string lights? You won't be able to set them on fire. Then again, you should keep an extinguisher nearby. Just in case.” Kolivan quirked a brow at that, waiting for one of them to go into more detail.
“Don't worry we have one ready at all times. Oh plus Mrs. Holt hooked me up with some beautiful roses.” Brows furrowed as the conversation moved forward and he resigned himself back to the report. Idly he typed notes for the next meeting and made a note to ask Keith if he knew about this incident.
“Just need to get all the hearts to decorate our room and it'll be perfect!” Pausing, the Galran leader looked up.
“You decorate your quarters with...hearts?” Two pairs of eyes focused on him as he frowned. “Is this a common practice among humans?” Picking up his pencil, Lance started tracing out another one.
“Kind of? I mean you give hearts to the one you love as a symbol of that love. You can do it whenever but it’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow.” The scratch of the pencil stop and he looked up again. “Which is an Earth holiday for couples.” He added. “Everyone gets super romantic and does all these things for the person they like. It’s basically just a big excuse to spoil your significant other. You know, more than usual.”
Claws tapped unevenly on the arm of the chair. “Keith has never mentioned this holiday before.”
Lance snorted. “What a shock. Keith’s not exactly an affectionate guy.”
“At least not openly.” Hunk corrected. Shrugging, Lance went back to work. “He’s come a long way but Keith’s still a private person.”
The Galran exhaled deeply and sat back in the chair. He knew very well how Keith could be. After all this time he still kept a lot to himself, struggling to accept compliments and affection. Kolivan always said what he meant without hesitation or concern. Paladin or not, Keith was still a Blade and he kept everything close to his chest. It made those rare soft moments something Kolivan cherished. After three long deca-phoebs and their final battle getting closer, the decision was simple.
“Tell me of these traditions.”
♡━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━♡
His first stop brought him outside a familiar office. Lance and Hunk had been full of helpful and confusing ideas. The important ones listed on his tablet, full of notes and questions that needed answers. For this task, he needed someone that knew Keith the best.
Stepping into the office, he put his arms behind his back. His presence startled Shiro and he held up a hand as the man started to rise. “I’ve come to discuss a more, personal matter.”
“Is everything alright with Keith?” A mouth twitched.
“Yes, everything is fine. Yet, this does involve him. I’ve been informed of a certain holiday that is taking place tomorrow. Are you familiar with it?”
A smile formed on Shiro’s face. “I am. So I’m guessing you want advice. Where should I even start?” Pulling out his tablet, claws moved over the screen.
“I was doing some research on my way over. Most of this I can handle either on my own or with someone else. The one thing that does still allude me is human diets. More so on the topic of food that is sweet. The yellow paladin was of immense help with the meal aspect. The red paladin suggested something called candy. The results are more numerous than expected.”
Lacing fingers together, Shiro thought about it. “The important thing is to avoid chocolate for sure. We learned the hard way that he’s allergic to it. Beyond that keep it simple. He doesn’t eat a lot of sweets but it’s okay to indulge now and then. Here.” Opening a drawer, he pulled out a bag and tossed it on the desk. Picking it up, Kolivan could see tiny colored candies inside. Pulling it closer to his face, it took a moment to realize each one had a word or phrase on it. “They’re Sweethearts. Each one has an endearing message on it. They only come out during this time of the year too. They’re not the best tasting candy but they are fun and cute.”
“Thank you, Shiro. I believe these will be sufficient for my purpose. Now I must find the green paladin as soon as possible. One of my tasks will be taking me away from this base.” Putting the bag away, he put a line through another task.
“Thank you.” Pausing at the door, Kolivan stared at the grooves etched into the metal door.
“There is no reason to thank me.”
Leaving, he headed down the hall and out the doors into the fresh air. The sun had come back out but the air still had a slight chill to it. The few that are outside wear more layers than he felt were necessary. Keith found every reason possible to not have to step foot outside. When he did it was a never-ending stream of complaints. He would grumble when Kolivan put a large arm around him but it was better than being cold.
This time his footsteps were the only ones trekking through the white powder that had yet to melt. He made sure to shake them off before stepping into the warmth of the building. Moving into the hallway, Kolivan waited for the system to confirm he was properly decontaminated.. He could see Pidge, busy scanning a group of flowers. It wasn’t until the white bot at her side beeped that she looked up, stepping back quickly.. “Woah! Kolivan you- I’m surprised to see you here,” she said, smoothing the jacket out.
“I apologize, this won’t take long. I need flowers, for Keith.” He clarified.
She blinked. “For Keith?”
“Yes for Valentine’s Day.” He pronounced the name slowly, unfamiliar with the word.
“That is happening tomorrow, isn’t it? I completely forgot. Not that I have anyone to celebrate with. Which is totally fine. I like my tradition of sitting around and eating candy while watching horror movies. I’ll be more than happy to help you though. Guess you’ll want roses then?”
Shaking his head, he showed her his tablet. “No, I am looking for these.”  Beezer and Pidge both leaned in to look at the picture.
“Violets huh? I can find you some but it might take a little bit to track them down. You really did do your research huh?”
Kolivan nodded. “Yes and that is fine. I have to leave soon but I should be back by tomorrow morning. I can get them then.” Pidge was already typing.
“Sounds good. Just shoot me a message and I’ll bring them to you. Keith’ll love them. I wish I could see his face when you give them to him.”
“If you would like, I can tell you about it later.”
Adjusting glasses, Pidge grinned. Keith would blab everything to Shiro for sure but Shiro would never share the details. At least this way she would have something to tell the others. “Sounds good. Leave it to me!”
♡━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━♡
With another task off the list, he made the trek back to his quarters. Keith was currently curled up to Kosmo, a blanket wrapped around him as eyes swept over the screen. Their bed had far more blankets that the leader of the Blades felt was necessary. Even so, Keith found a way to use every single one. Kolivan could see a steaming mug snug between bare feet. “The room is not that cold.” A soft hmph was the only response, his smaller companion more interested in the book he was reading.
Grabbing a small bag, he wouldn’t need to bring much with him. Not for the short amount of time he would be gone. Regardless, he mentally went over everything he needed. This was the most trying task. Since it was the ultimate symbol of love, he could see why. Muttering to himself, he could feel eyes staring at him. “Are you going somewhere?”
Putting the last of it in the bag, he picked it up. “Yes.” The silence stretched again but Kolivan knew better. “Is that a problem?”
“No.” The answer was instant before another pause. “I just...have more free time off tomorrow.”
“I should be back by tomorrow morning. We can spend the remainder of it together if you would like.” He could hear Keith fidgeting on the bed.
“If you want.”
Kolivan walked towards the bed as purple watched him warily. Reaching out, he carefully threaded claws through raven hair. Slipping down to smooth skin, a thumb ran over the scar. Tilting a head up, purple met yellow. “I do.” The soft red of cheeks never ceased to be endearing along with the way eyes would avoid his when Keith got like this.
“Then-” hesitating, eyes met again for a split second before Keith lost his nerve. “Be careful.” Nodding, Kolivan let go only to press a kiss to Keith’s forehead.
“I will always come back to you.”
♡━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━♡
Staring at the clock for the millionth time, Keith resumed his pacing. He had intentionally cleared today to spend it with Kolivan. The larger Galra didn’t know about what today meant and that was okay. It wasn’t going to stop him from using today as an excuse to try and express his feelings. It was something he was terrible at, they all knew that. The best he could do was a gift he had carved himself and to try and actually put into words how he felt. Hopefully, it didn’t go bad. Keith had never heard Kolivan laugh so at least he didn’t have to worry about that reaction.
Kolivan had said he would be back by tomorrow morning. When noon came and went Keith, started to get worried. Kolivan could have been captured again. What if he was injured? How would Keith even know? Biting a bottom lip, he cursed under his breath as his pace increased.
Should he go out there? Take the black lion and see if he could find any clues? Why hadn’t he thought to ask Kolivan where he was going? Someone had to know but who he wasn’t certain. Too much had changed in the time he was gone.
The sound of the door went unnoticed as he made another rotation, bumping into something very solid. Stepping back, a hand reached for his blade but a much larger one caught his arm. Looking upward, Keith let out a breath he didn’t realize he had been holding. “You are such a jerk! You said tomorrow morning!” He shouldn’t have been yelling but after all the obsessive worrying, he had too many emotions pent up. The hand let go and wrapped around shoulders this time, bringing him against a hard body. Soft rumbling purrs vibrated against his small frame as the hand soothed over his back. “I thought maybe-”
“It’s alright. No matter how far we are apart-”
“-, we’ll always find a way back to each other.” Keith finished, stepping back. “So? What was so important that you had to make me worry so much?”
A rare smile crossed Kolivan’s lips as he led Keith to the bed. “There were a few things I needed, in order to celebrate a certain holiday with you.”
“How did you-?”
“Your friends were talking about it yesterday. I don’t need to ask why you didn’t tell me, I know how you are. Even when you want something, you’ll rarely express it. Much like wanting to spend the day with me.” He pointed out as Keith stared at his lap. “Regardless, you and I are bonded. I could do better in showing that.”
Keith shook his head. “I’m not exactly any better but you know you don’t have to do anything. I know how you feel and that’s enough.”
“Perhaps but confirmations are enjoyable aren’t they?” A small nod was enough and he smiled again. “Good because I have several for you.” Opening the pack he pulled out the candy.
“Sweethearts?”
Kolivan nodded. “Yes, they have messages. Most of them do, I noticed that some seemed blank for some reason. Shiro suggested them since you cannot have chocolate. I was able to find some of this chocolate and scanned it. The main ingredient is very dangerous to Galrans. Since you do have Galran blood, it makes sense that it affected you as well. Although to a lesser degree. Regardless, I have made sure the others are aware so they don’t accidentally consume it.”
“I can’t believe I’m allergic because I’m part Galra. That’s so weird and a little unfair.” Shaking the bag, he smiled. “Thanks, these are cute.”
“That is not all.” Taking Keith’s hand, Kolivan pulled the other man to his feet. “The rest of it is elsewhere. It is part of what took so long in me returning to you. Leading Keith from the room, they stopped across the hallway. As far as he knew the room had been empty for quite a while. When Kolivan opened the door, he could see that it wasn’t any longer. The room itself was lit with various lights that sparkled as if the room was filled with violet stars. Various purple flowers sat along the walls and the prettiest display was in the center of a table.
Keith had been so distracted by the aesthetic that he almost missed the smell of food. An impressive meal sat steaming on the table. His stomach growled at the sight, mouthwatering. “I can’t believe you did all this, for me. All I have for you is a stupid figurine I made.” He said, guilt starting to eat at him.
“You made me something?” Digging into his pocket, Keith brought out the palm-sized carving in the shape of a shield. An ornate lion carved into the center with a blade underneath.
“It’s nothing amazing, just something I made that made me think of us.”
A large hand took the carving, bringing it up so Kolivan could look at it better. “This is beautiful. The craftsmanship and detail are impressive. You should be proud of it. I will carry this with me at all times. If we must be apart, I will use it to remind me of what I must get back to.” Keith was grateful for the somewhat low light, hoping it hid the blush that was overtaking his face.
“I’m glad you like it.” Lead to the table, they sat down.
“I genuinely do Keith. Thank you. Now, I have one last thing for you.” Pulling out a large cylindrical container, it held the most beautiful crystal Keith had ever seen. It was an oval shape the size of his own fist. Deep purple glowed softly and gave off little stars that disappeared only to be remade. It took his breath away to look at.
“What is it?” He asked, tone hushed. Keith couldn’t take his eyes off of it.
“I was told that humans gave each other hearts to celebrate their love. So that is what I have given you. This is the heart of a Golle. They are large creatures made of rock and precious gems. Every deca-phoeb around this time, they become a problem for the people of Lumina. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to obtain a heart for you. Especially since human hearts are rather...ugly.” Kolivan looked at the wide-eyed look on Keith’s face. “Did I say something wrong?”
“You fought a creature and brought me it’s heart?”
Kolivan frowned. “Yes. I’m not sure how the others do it but this was the most effective method that I am aware of.” Keith opened his mouth before closing it again. He knew he should tell Kolivan what it actually meant to give someone a heart.
Looking at the container, he decided against it. Knowing his other half- no his mate had fought some creature and brought him the heart was strangely romantic.
“No, not at all. I’m just impressed and a bit in awe to be honest. It’s beautiful. Thank you.” Keith said. “Please tell me this is everything, I don’t know if I can take you being anymore thoughtful.”
“There is one more thing.” Taking out his tablet, it only took a moment for Keith to get a message. “While I was traveling, I wrote this for you.” Looking at the odd symbols, they were familiar.
“Is this in Galran? It’s a sweet gesture but I can’t read this.” It was then that Keith heard a sound he never had before. A low rumble that turned into a more noticeable chuckle. The unmistakable sound of Kolivan laughing. It was a beautiful sound and Keith’s heart beat a little faster.
“I could use it as an incentive to learn but I will not be that cruel. Would you like me to read it to you over our meal?” Keith laughed at himself along with the joke.
“I would love nothing more.”

Thankful for Every Moment
Pidge suggests the group get together to celebrate a certain American holiday. Just some fluff for the holidays.
Pairings: None
“Hey Shiro, do you mind if I ask you something?” Pidge asked, looking up from behind the closed laptop. Based on past experiences this could be another Lance incident or a genuine question. In retrospect, that incident was funny but still dangerous for all involved.
“Careful Shiro, she’s plotting something.” Matt gave Pidge a suspicious look. Brown eyes immediately snapped to her brother as a frown formed.
“What? I am not! I mean, not exactly. I do want to do something that involves the whole team but it’s nothing bad.”
“Oh really? Remember when you tried to make food with that flower you found?” Matt asked.
“To be fair my scans said it was safe for human consumption. Lance even tried it before we used it.”
“Pidge!” She wilted at the strong tone in Shiro's voice.
“That wasn't my fault. I told him beforehand that I believed it was edible but, that being a foreign flora, we should test it first. Keith was the one that asked if Lance was too scared to try it. I just...encouraged it a little.” She reasoned, taking note of the soft look that passed over their leader's face. Ever since Keith had given back the black lion and joined the Blades, none of them had seen him in a while.
“Regardless, you should have run further tests on how it reacted with other ingredients before you fed it to the whole team. That was the worst day of my life.” Matt put his hands over his stomach as the memories came back. Even Shiro couldn't hide a grimace. “Not even the Empire was that cru- OW!” Rubbing his arm, he moved out of reach of his sister as Shiro put his hands up.
“Alright, that's enough. Pidge what is it that you want to do?” Pushing glasses up, her face softened as she opened the laptop and turned it around.
“I was thinking that considering the time of year it is on Earth that maybe we could celebrate Thanksgiving. It's always been a big thing back home, at least it was, so I thought-” Pidge stopped, closing the computer. “Never mind, it was a stupid idea.”
“Pidge wait. That's actually a good idea,” Matt said, putting a hand on her shoulder.
“Really?”
“Matt's right.” Shiro smiled. “We've all been busy with our own projects. Even so, it's important to not get caught up in all the bad and remember what we have and what we are.”
“This will be great! As long as Pidge isn't allowed anywhere near the kitchen. Woah!” Quick to hide behind Shiro, a small hand missed him by an inch. The black paladin sighed as Matt stuck his tongue out at her.
“Let's get everyone together and let them know your idea.”
Clasping her hands together, a large smile spread across Allura's face. “That sounds absolutely fantastic! One, thing if I may?” Blue eyes fell on Hunk and Lance. “What is Thanksgiving?” The boys looked at each other and shrugged.
“No idea.”
“I dunno.” Lance scratched his head. “I don't think we celebrate that back home.” Coran and Allura shared a look this time.
“So is it not an Earth...uh thing?” Coran asked.
“No, no it is. It's just not a universally shared ‘Earth thing’. Pidge explained. “We all come from different parts of the same planet so our cultures are different. Matt and I were born in The States and that's where we celebrate this holiday. It involves everyone getting together, having a big meal, and talking about what they were thankful of.”
“Oh! Oh! I love cooking and food! I've got this in the bag!” Hunk said, holding up his hand.
“Yeah count me in!” Lance exclaimed as he slapped Hunk's hand. “So where do we start?”
“No one knows food better than Hunk. We won't be able to have the traditional food but we can get as close as possible.” Pidge said. “I'll give you a list and you can come up with an alternative menu.”
“I can help with that! I know plenty of places to get some of the best ingredients!” Coran said, stepping forward.
“As long as he's not cooking then I'm okay with this. So what about the rest of us?” Lance asked.
“We’ll be getting everything Hunk needs. We won't have a lot of time before the day is actually here so we'll need everyone's help.” Pidge showed them the calendar on the laptop, time counting down. “As soon as he and Coran get the menu and location of the items, I'll send out the assignments.” An alert from his tablet caught Shiro’s attention.
“Sounds like a plan. We'll break for now. Good job Pidge.” Leaving the group, Allura caught up with him in the hall.
“Trying to leave me behind?” She teased, holding up a hand to stop the apology. “I'm joking, I know you could handle this meeting alone but I want to be there if that's okay?” She asked with a small smile, already knowing the answer.
“Of course it is. I know you probably had a lot of questions about this holiday though. I wouldn't have blamed you if you had stayed with the others.” Allura shook her head.
“It's okay. I can ask later. Did you celebrate as well?”
“I didn't, at first. I'm originally from a different part of Earth like Lance and Hunk but I moved very early in life. I didn't know anyone but then one day Iverson invited me over. Eventually, I had someone of my own to celebrate with.”
“You mean Keith?” she asked. Shiro hesitated to correct her. She wasn't completely wrong and she took his silence as agreement. “We haven't seen him in quite some time. Busy with the Blades I imagine. Still, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to ask Kolivan about him during our meeting.” She hinted, earning a small smile.
“I suppose not.”
Matt was the one that divided the tasks, giving each paladin a list of what to get and where. Other than a minor run-in with a couple of Galran soldiers, which had surprised both parties, it had gone off without a hitch.
Hunk had taken over again, keeping a very tight reign on who he let in the kitchen. Coran and Pidge were both banned much to her annoyance and everyone else's relief. Even Shiro was happy to follow orders. None of them seemed to know what half the ingredients were but as soon as it started cooking, more than one mouth started watering.
Setting the last dish on the table Hunk stepped back, looking proud of himself. “This looks amazing!” Lance staring wide-eyed with the rest of them.
“You think so? I may have outdone myself.” Hunk shrugged but the smile never left his face as he sat down. “So you guys are the experts, anything special we should do before we eat?”
“Well like I said, it's called Thanksgiving. So part if the tradition is that when everyone is together, we go around and say what we're thankful for. You know, give thanks.” Pidge explained.
“It's basically in the name. Clever, okay then me first!” Lance stated, looking thoughtful. “I'm thankful for...laughter. Despite everything that's happened, we're still been able to smile and remember good times.”
“That was really sweet Lance.” Allura flashed him a smile, oblivious to the blush it brought out. “I'm thankful to have hope. For the future and for the people of the universe. It was something I wasn't sure I'd ever have again.” Coran put his hand on her shoulder as the mice ran up her arm to join in.
“As for me, I'm thankful that everyone is in good health. There have been a few obstacles along the way and there will be more but right now we're all together.” Shiro glanced at the empty place to his right. They had set it out of habit but the person that used to occupy that space was living a new life now.
“It's family for me.” Matt looked at Pidge. “For the one we made.”
“And the ones we haven't found yet.” Pidge finished. “And those waiting on Earth.” She finished as he nodded.
“Me next! I'm thankful for the food. It's what's brings us all together. No matter how busy we are, sharing a meal with family and friends is always great!” Hunk said with a big smile.
“It does help when we have an amazing chef putting it all together.”
“Aww, thanks, Lance. What about you Shiro?” At the sound of his own name eyes refocused. Looking around the table, he faltered.
“Oh um…”
“Friends.” Several heads turned towards the door as Shiro stood up.
“Keith?” The Blade, rubbed the back of his neck as he walked in.
“Sorry I would have changed but I was already running late.” He said, gesturing towards the scuffed uniform.
“It's okay. We're just glad you made it.” Shiro said, relief evident in his voice as he gestured to empty spot. “I wasn't sure you'd actually make it. I mentioned what we were doing to Kolivan but I didn't know if he told you.”
“He did and he made sure that I would be able to see my-” Keith hesitated for a moment before a smile won out. -"to see my friends, which I'm thankful to have. Even certain annoying ones.” he continued, giving Lance a pointed look.
“Hey!” Shiro laughed, putting a hand on Keith's shoulder.
“I'm thankful to be here, with everyone,” he stated, looking at Keith again.
“That is so sweet.” Lance cooed. “But enough or that, let's eat!”

More Than We Were
After saving Earth, the road to recovery is long. Keith gets a visit from Commander Iverson and the two discuss how things have changed.
Keith had been happy to wake up in the hospital to the image of his mother and Kolivan waiting for him. He had thought it was a dream at first before it became very real. Relief had flooded through the room.  He to know they were alive, and them for him.
Over the coming week, they told him everything that had been going on. They had found as many of the remaining Blades as they could. Members of the rebels and the Coalition had been showing up in varying numbers. Hearing that Matt had come back safe was the nicest part.
Their families were back now and every new bit of information was as welcome as the last. Shiro visited often, sitting by his side as the two of them talked. Neither of them mentioned the last fight or about those they had lost. That would come later after they all had a chance to healed. Once his body was strong enough he would take his mother to see his father. She had seen it all in the Quantum Abyss. Even so, she needed a chance to morn and say goodbye. Keith had promised to go with Shiro for him to say his goodbyes as well.
An unexpected visitor came at a time when everyone else was absent. Save for Kosmo who stretched out on the bed, enjoying his daily dose of scratches and pets. The knock on the door was the only warning before it opened and Commander Iverson looked in.
Closing the door behind him, a small smile spread across his face at seeing Keith awake and sitting up. “Sorry for the intrusion but I’ve been making my rounds. You were next on the list.”
Keith felt a smile of his own start to form as hands went back to smoothing over soft fur. “I appreciate even being on the list.” Iverson didn't seem to find it very funny and Keith was quick to try and fix it. “Sorry, I didn’t mean- I just remember before, any list of yours I was on meant I had done something wrong. Of course, things are different now.” Earning a small chuckle from Iverson, Keith relaxed a little.
“That is true. You gave us all a run for our money, Shiro included. Even so, you’ve come a long way.” Iverson said petting Kosmo who was more than happy to have more attention. “You did good Keith, you all did. You’ve more than proven you’re not that snot-nosed kid anymore.”
“Some people think otherwise,” Keith said with a small shrug.
“And you’ll continue to prove ‘em wrong.” Iverson returned, ignoring the surprised look from Keith. “People will always talk no matter how great you are. The results you get and the things you've done speak volume. The Garrison wasn’t where you needed to be but you already know that.”
Keith looked out the window, words playing over in his mind. “I suppose that’s true. I was too mad at the world and I didn’t even realize how small that world was. I’ve experienced so much since then. Not everything was good but every bit of it made me who I am. Even you helped.” He looked back when Iverson scoffed.
“All I did was yell at you all the time. Not that you didn’t deserve it.” Keith shook his head.
“You did what you had to because you were trying to make sure as many of us survived if a war ever did happen. You’ve saved a lot of lives.” Keith offered which only seemed to catch Iverson off guard before his look became somber.
“Not enough but it never is. Any loss of life is difficult and there were plenty I know we could have avoided. It’s an unfortunate part of the war. The effects of which we'll feel for a while. Still, having Voltron here, it gave people what they needed which was hope. People need that, otherwise, they just give up without even trying. You and the MFE pilots both. I never thought I’d see the day you and Griffin could be in the same room and not get into a fight about one thing or another. If that isn’t proof that you’ve come a long way, I don’t know what does.” Iverson said with some mirth to his voice.
“This isn’t over but no matter what they try to throw at you, I know you five will give it your all.” The sound of the door opening again caught the attention of everyone in the room. Walking in, Krolia looked as surprised to see Iverson as he did to see her. Relaxing, the commander gave Kosmo one last scratch behind the ears, earning a wagging tail. “I should get going, still have more rounds to make. You’ve got a good team, Keith. No matter what happens, you’ll all come out of this, together.” Iverson tipped his hat to Krolia before opening the door.
“Commander Iverson I- thank you.”
Another small smile was all he got before the door closed behind him leaving Krolia confused.
Laying back, Keith smiled. “I’ll explain later.”
