Full view (if you can’t read it) finally it’s done!!! this is the first real translation I’ve done beyond bits and pieces of manga pages, it took several days too long to translate and typeset and honestly i want to never look at it ever again LMAO disclaimer that this is not by any means a 100% literal translation. for the sake of fitting it into the layout I had to truncate it a little, and the way it was written originally is so damn extra i mostly just wanted to capture the overall….thirstiness of the narrator here (lol). i also heavily referenced the licensed translation of sadamoto’s manga for the dialogue stuff since its probably more recognisable to an english audience Original scans are from gladosdark

Hi! I read your text about the problem of kawoshin fanfiction and tbh I agree with you. So, can you recommend me fanfics about that kind of Kaworu you described? I already read "Irasshaimase", "Joie de Vivre" and "The Boy Who Shouted Love at the Face of the World".

I actually had to go back and look for Kawoshin fics because I could not for the life of me remember any, but here are some I think might fit the bill:

Three Knots by TheEndeavorNetwork

This is a semi-AU of 3.0 where Shinji didn’t cause third impact, lots of drama, action and fluff and it’s just nice to see the pilots interacting. It ticks all my boxes, honestly. Not only does it explore Kaworu and Shinji’s dynamic in rebuild, but also focuses on Shinji’s relationship with Rei (obviously a huge plus for me), Rei overcoming Gendo’s control over her, has AsuMari, and even the Rei and Kaworu interactions that I was hoping for in 3.0 but never got. Putting it on this list because it’s the only fic I’ve read that portrays Kaworu’s jealousy towards Rei, and it deals with it in such a satisfying, in-character way too. It’s really refreshing to see him pissed-off, insecure and jealous but hiding it all from Shinji with that signature calm smile. Also ft. a bit of perv!Kaworu which is hilarious.

To the one who saved my life by Queenhydra

Set in a post third impact world, this one delves into Kaworu’s relationship with Seele, his belief in his duty as an angel, willingness and also hesitation to destroy humanity and feeling like an insignificant pawn. Kaworu and Shinji here are really equals who both make each other feel loved and important. I don’t want to spoil too much because there’s some nice action and plot in a unique setting. I also love Asuka and Shinji’s friendship in this.

By The Sea Shore by Galileo

Old af but still gold. I like it because the Kaworu here seems a lot more warm and human than usual. Feat. Kaworu smugly but affectionately teasing Shinji, which I’ve always really loved the idea of, best head-canon ok. I think it’s this portrayal of their relationship outside all the symbolism and waxing poetic without coming off as too sappy that I really like, complete with the quirks of their interaction that just make it seems so much more tangible and real.

Really interesting portrayal of Kaworu’s self harm habit from the drafts. The way he reacts to Shinji’s concern for him seems very in-character - he gets all philosophical and metaphorical about it, which is very Kaworu. Has that soft yet melancholy atmosphere that I love.

Shades of the Moon by princess

Recommending this for almost the opposite reason than By The Sea Shore, because I like different Kaworu interpretations :p. Kaworu here is very clinical and analytical about human nature and interactions. Even though the scene is supposed to be an intimate one, he still comes across as more curious and even detached than passionate and I think that’s an interesting perspective as well because it highlights his angel or ‘outsider’ nature, that of an observer.

Angel Standing By by gorillazgal86

Set years after the series, with a really unique premise of Kaworu becoming a human so he can be with Shinji, on the condition that all Shinji’s memories of him are erased. Really complex and fascinating portrait of Kaworu, who starts off as very idealistic, benevolent and sure of both his love for Shinji and Shinji’s love for him. However, due to now being a human, his emotions are really all over the place. Eventually they meet, and Shinji, not having any memories of him, pushes him away in typical hedgehog fashion. Instead of being understanding and forgiving, human-Kaworu gets super upset about it and has like an existential crisis, starts questioning if it was worth it to give up being an angel just to come back to Shinji. I even think he’s actually too harsh/unfair to Shinji later on, but that’s what makes his portrayal so captivating - he’s human, with all the human flaws. Not being able to understand others, feeling emotional, betrayed and angry. In a way like Shinji was at the end of episode 24. 

Apart from these fics I actually want to recommend a few doujinshis too:

Susumihajieta Bokuranojikan (進みはじめた ぼくらの時間) “Our Time That Has Just Began to Flow” by TETSU-SABI

and it’s sequel Mirai no Tobira (未来の扉)  “Future’s Door”

I have to recommend these because they’re exactly what I talked about in my original post - Kaworu “having an existentialist crisis when he realises that he’s based his entire self-worth on his ability to make Shinji happy and he doesn’t succeed bc Shinji’s already happy”. Also notable because it features them having a legit fight and Kaworu making a serious mistake in something he says. The 2nd one is even an examination of what makes Kaworu different from just anyone who’d show Shinji affection, a deconstruction of that common analysis by non-shippers. And just, both of them caring about each other so much. The series just so sweet and beautiful overall, really worth checking out.

There’s also Kimi no Shiranai Boku no Koto (君の知らない僕のこと) “Things You Don’t Know About Me”  also by TETSU-SABI

I’m putting this on the list because I think it’s probably the darkest interpretation of Kaworu you can do with out coming off as completely OOC. Ft. Loving but morally ambiguous rebuild!Kaworu and doubtful but also dependant Shinji. It comes off as a deconstruction of the sudden, inexplicable affection Kaworu has towards him in 3.0 and the fact that Shinji (and the audience) don’t actually know much about him and his true motives/intentions. It has themes of obsession and distrust but without going too far I think. Kinda dark but mesmerising too in a way. Read it if you’re up for an alternate character interpretation.

I hope you like this list! I really dug deep in the archives for some of these haha. There are lots of other really good and well-written Kawoshin fics but I wanted ones that really made Kaworu feel like his own character with his own personality and goals not just someone who loves Shinji. ^v^

Koji Takao’s seiyuu verifies that Kaji is indeed alive in the Q!verse.

Hideaki Anno disclosed Rebuild’s “hidden nature” to Akira Ishida (Kaworu’s seiyuu) way back in 1.0.
