Apologies if this isn't the right place, but since you seem familiar with AO3 I figured I'd ask. I've been reading fic for years, but I'm not familiar with triggers and what should be tagged as such. I was wondering if you knew of a solid list of things that are good to warn for on fics? I figure rape and abuse would make the list, but are there other things (ex. phobias) that are decently common enough to be of note? (ofc if anyone wants something tagged, I'd be happy to oblige! safe reading!)
I’ll open this up to the blog because I’m a fluff/comedy/smut writer myself so I don’t have a lot of knowledge of what is and isn’t tagged.
A safe bet would be to tag anything relating to violence or abuse like you said, and probably things like drugs and alcohol.

Tips on how to write a novel that is/includes controversial themes, but in your head as a writer know that you want your novel to not encourage this theme, but you want to make sure that your readers see that as well....
Separating Yourself as the Writer from a Controversial Theme
One of the important things we do as writers is explore aspects of the human condition, and that sometimes means exploring controversial themes and ideas. If you want to do that while separating your personal stance from anything put forth in the book, it’s essential that you do three things:
1) Craft and deliver a clear message with your personal stance.
When exploring controversial subjects, it’s usually necessary to portray characters with the controversial attitude or doing the controversial thing, but if that’s all there is–people thinking or doing this controversial thing, but if there’s no clear message there and nothing happens to deliver that message, all you’re doing is writing a book that appears to support whatever the controversial subject is. If you want to explore whale hunting, but all you do is portray whaling and whalers in a positive light, people will read your book and assume you’re pro-whaling. So that’s why you first have to figure out what it is you want to say about the controversial subject–what’s your message? Do you want to say that whaling is flat out bad? Do you want to say that it’s a fundamental part of some indigenous cultures but needs to be better regulated? You have to figure out what your message is going to be, then you need to figure out what can happen in the story to illustrate that point. In other words, if your message is not pro-whaling, you have to make sure you’re illustrating the bad things about whaling, too. Show the consequences of people having the controversial attitude or doing the controversial thing. Show how the negative impact it has on people, animals, the environment, etc. When a character says or does the controversial thing, make sure another character is there to call them out on it. Whatever you have to do to balance the scales, show both sides, and illustrate why the thing is bad or unfavorable.
2) Consider the implications of this story and you being the one to write it.
As writers, there’s theoretically no limit to the topics we can explore, and some writers believe we should be able to write about anything, no matter how terrible, how controversial, how unqualified we are to write about the topic, or the negative impact the end product has on those most affected by the controversial subject. Personally, I’m in the group of writers who believe we can do better and that as writers, we have a great responsibility to not exploit topics (which usually translates to actual people) for our own enjoyment or benefit. There are also topics not all of us are qualified to write about. If you want to write about a character who happens to be blind, that’s obviously fine, but unless you are blind or have experienced blindness for an extended period, you’re probably not the best person to write a story that’s an exploration of the blind experience. Likewise, you can write about a character who happens to have kids, but unless you’ve had kids yourself, it doesn’t make a ton of sense for you to write a story that explores the darker aspects of motherhood. It’s not that you can’t… I mean, of course you can, you can theoretically write anything you want–but should you? “Can” and “should” are two very different things.
3) Do your research, even if you think you’re an expert.
Whatever topic you want to explore, whether or not you’re writing from experience, it’s still super important to do your research. Even if you are blind, your experience as a blind person may not be the same as another person’s experience. Consider the way your topic affects different people in different places. If you want to explore the topic of blindness as someone who has experienced it, consider how things like your gender, orientation, race, and socioeconomic background might affect your experience. Find out how differences in those areas might affect a person’s experience and consider working that into your exploration. And, ultimately, make sure that your research supports the message you want to covey and the points you’re using to convey it. :)

Drafting: The Theory of Shitty First Drafts
Writing books often exhort you to “write a shitty first draft,” but I always resisted this advice. After all,
I was already writing shitty drafts, even when I tried to write good ones. Why go out of my way to make them shittier?
A shitty first draft just kicks the can down the road, doesn’t it? Sooner or later, I’d have to write a good draft—why put it off?
If I wrote without judging what I wrote, how would I make any creative choices at all?
That first draft inevitably obscured my original vision, so I wanted it to be at least slightly good.
Writing something shitty meant I was shitty.
So for years, I kept writing careful, cramped, painstaking first drafts—when I managed to write at all. At last, writing became so joyless, so draining, so agonizing for me that I got desperate: I either needed to quit writing altogether or give the shitty-first-draft thing a try.
Turns out everything I believed about drafting was wrong.
For the last six months, I’ve written all my first drafts in full-on don’t-give-a-fuck mode. Here’s what I’ve learned so far:
“Shitty first draft” is a misnomer
A rough draft isn’t just a shitty story, any more than a painter’s preparatory sketch is just a shitty painting. Like a sketch, a draft is its own kind of thing: not a lesser version of the finished story, but a guide for making the finished story.
Once I started thinking of my rough drafts as preparatory sketches, I stopped fretting over how “bad” they were. Is a sketch “bad”? And actually, a rough draft can be beautiful the same way a sketch is beautiful: it has its own messy energy.
Don’t try to do everything at once
People who make complex things need to solve one kind of problem before they can solve others. A painter might need to work out where the big shapes go before they can paint the details. A writer might need to decide what two people are saying to each other before they can describe the light in the room or what those people are doing with their hands.
I’d always embraced this principle up to a point. In the early stages, I’d speculate and daydream and make messy notes. But that freedom would end as soon as I started drafting. When you write a scene, I thought, you have to start with the first word and write the rest in order. Then it dawned on me: nobody would ever see this! I could write the dialogue first and the action later; or the action first and the dialogue later; or some dialogue and action first and then interior monologue later; or I could write the whole thing like I was explaining the plot to my friend over the phone. The draft was just one very long, very detailed note to myself. Not a story, but a preparatory sketch for a story. Why not do it in whatever weird order made sense to me?
Get all your thoughts onto the page
Here’s how I used to write: I’d sit there staring at the screen and I’d think of something—then judge it, reject it, and reach for something else, which I’d most likely reject as well—all without ever fully knowing what those things were. And once you start rejecting thoughts, it’s hard to stop. If you don’t write down the first one, or the second, or the third, eventually your thought-generating mechanism jams up. You become convinced you have no thoughts at all.
When I compare my old drafts with my new ones, the old ones look coherent enough. They’re presentable as stories. But they suck as drafts, because I can’t see myself thinking in them. I have no idea what I wanted that story to be. These drafts are opaque and airless, inscrutable even to me, because a good 90% of what I was thinking while I wrote them never made it onto the page.
These days, most of my thoughts go onto the page, in one form or another. I don’t waste time figuring out how to say something, I just ask, “what are you trying to say here?” and write that down. Because this isn’t a story, it’s a plan for a story, so I just need the words to be clear, not beautiful. The drafts I write now are full of placeholders and weird meta notes, but when I read them, I can see where my mind is going. I can see what I’m trying to do. Consequently, I no longer feel like my drafts obscure my original vision. In fact, their whole purpose is to describe that vision.
Drafts are memos to future-you
To draft effectively, you need a personal drafting style or “language” to communicate with your future self (who is, of course, the author of your second draft). This language needs to record your ideas quickly so it can keep up with the pace of your imagination, but it needs to do so in a form that will make sense to you later. That’s why everyone’s drafts look different: your drafting style has to fit the way your mind works.
I’m still working mine out. Honestly, it might take a while. But recently, I started writing in fragments. That’s just how my mind works: I get pieces of sentences before I understand how to fit them together. Wrestling with syntax was slowing me down, so now I just generate the pieces and save their logical relationships for later. Drafting effectively means learning these things about yourself. And to do that, you can’t get all judgmental. You can’t fret over how you should be writing, you just gotta get it done.
Messy drafts are easier to revise
I find that drafting quickly and messily keeps the story from prematurely “hardening” into a mute, opaque object I’m afraid to change. I no longer do that thing, for instance, where I endlessly polish the first few paragraphs of a draft without moving on. Because how do you polish a bunch of fragments taped together with dashes? A draft that looks patently “unfinished” stays malleable, makes me want to dig my hands in and move stuff around.

Sitting down to write a story, I used to feel this awful responsibility to create something good. Now I treat drafting simply as documenting ideas I already have—not as creation at all, but as observation and description. I don’t wait around for good words or good ideas. I just skim off whatever’s floating on the surface and write it down. It’s that which allows other, potentially better ideas to surface.
As a younger writer, my misery and frustration perpetuated themselves: suppressing so many thoughts made my writing cramped and inhibited, which convinced me I had no ideas, which made me even more afraid to write lest I discover how empty inside I really was. That was my fear, I guess: if I looked squarely at my innocent, unvetted, unvarnished ideas, I’d see how bad they truly were, and then I’d have to—what, pack up and go home? Never write again? I don’t know. But when I stopped rejecting ideas and started dumping them onto the page, the worst didn’t happen. In fact, it was a huge relief.

Worldbuilding with Psychology
I haven’t mentioned this before, but I’m close to graduating with a psychology degree. As I was organizing things to move back in at university, I came across some notes from my Developmental Psych class. Psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner presented an ecological systems model of child development, which represents a dynamic model of how people develop psychologically depending on their environment. I realized this may be an interesting reference for writers as we consider worldbuilding.

The individual is at the center. Each level interacts with the others and may affect them in different ways and to different degrees at different times. The individual is at the center of the model and has inherent traits which are the result of genetics. The microsystem is the individual’s most immediate surroundings. These are the places and people they come into close contact with on a daily basis, including the home and peer groups. The way microsystems treat the individual influence them, but the behavior of the individual also influences how the microsystems react to them. The mesosystem is essentially comprised of links between microsystems - between home and school, between home and church, between family and peers. Active involvement between microsystems promotes harmony and a sense of like-mindedness. The exosystem consists of linkages between systems that do not directly influence the individual, but do so indirectly by influencing a microsystem. For instance, the parents’ workplaces influences the parents’ behavior in the presence of the individual. The macrosystem consists of more distant influences that still have a significant impact on the individual. These elements often include beliefs, values, and other aspects of culture. For instance, life in a country at war will influence an individual differently than life in a country at peace. The chronosystem simply incorporates the meaningful passage of time. What is in each system, how much it affects an individual, and how can all shift in time.
What does this have to do with worldbuilding?
One can relate Bronfenbrenner’s model to creating a fictional sense of place however one likes, but I’ve drawn some parallels between each level and a corresponding element in worldbuilding. The model looks something like this.

The Protagonist:
The main character (or characters) lies at the center of your worldbuilding. It is through their eyes, or over their shoulder, that the reader experiences the world in which your story is set. A strong sense of place is vital to telling a satisfying tale, and a great deal of it comes down to your protagonists. Like in the original model, the protagonist has certain inborn traits that are a result of nature, but are also influenced by nurture - the other systems, in this case. The world is reflected in the hearts, minds, and behaviors of the people who live in it, and the people are reflected in the world they populate.
The Supporting Cast:
These are the people the protagonists interacts with most, and it’s a two-way street of influence. Their behavior influences the protagonist, but the protagonist affects them as well. You can present a great deal of information about the world through the interactions between characters. The way your protagonist interacts with parents and siblings can reveal family structure and dynamics, and interactions with friends or coworkers can shine light on social classes, pastimes, or employment. What your characters do, how they do it, and how they speak or feel about it will reveal what is normal or not.
The Immediate Surroundings:
Where are all these interactions taking place? The actual physical locales in seen in your story have an impact on the way people behave, but don’t forget the direct effect of setting the scene. One behaves differently at school, as opposed to the mall - how can you use differences like this to portray societal norms and mores in your story? Additionally, the events and values of a world leave physical reminders, which may be as simple as smog over a city unconcerned by or incapable of controlling pollution. Perhaps there is graffiti in the streets leftover from social or political unrest. The remnants of a torn-down shrine or monument may reflect changing values, war, or persecution of certain religions or other groups. Living conditions can portray class differences. Possibilities are endless.
The Social Structure and Culture:
Social structure has ramifications on who can interact with whom and what’s considered appropriate. These rules may be very strict or much more informal. If there are rigorous separations in place according to class, an interaction between members of different status will be shocking to your characters. Speaking out against an elder coworker may have severe consequences, or employees may be under forced retirement deadlines - these differences reveal if old age is revered or looked down upon. What holidays do people celebrate, and how? What manners of speech or behavior are unique to the setting? Social norms will be reflected in the behavior of your characters, but the population is capable of changing those norms.
The Physical Setting:
The setting at large still has far-reaching influence on your story. The geography itself will determine a number of things about the setting, including the landscape, weather, physical resources available, methods of transportation and more. All of these things trickle down into each of the layers beneath it and leave their fingerprints. If transportation is unfavorable, how does this affect information and cultural exchange? How about the economy? The physical setting is an umbrella of elements which may change everything under it, even in small or indirect ways.
The Genre:
The genre determines, amongst a few other things, how much of each of the above is needed. In essence, genre can be your guide to where you should place your focus in worldbuilding. Fantasy and science fiction often call for a greater emphasis on the physical setting and cultures, while realistic fiction set in real-life places readers are likely to be familiar with is likely to need emphasis on the protagonist and supporting cast. Some genres, such as historical fiction, may need a more evenly balanced blend of each system. The plot structure itself will also have an influence. For instance, in a ‘pursuit’ plot, the ticking clock and pursuit itself are typically considered of more import than the characters, while 'forbidden love’ plots are all about the people and culture.
Remember, as always, to mold writing advice to your work and not the other way around. The influence of one or more of these systems may be heightened or lessened, depending on the needs of your story, and they may interact differently, perhaps even from chapter to chapter. Hi, so I was wondering if I could pick yours (and the community's) brain a little? I've been writing fanfic for almost ten years, but it's been strictly romance/pre-relationship stuff, and while I'm still writing it, the story I'm working on now requires a physical fight scene and I've never written one before (and I haven't found a way to skip out on it yet). Any tips on writing action scenes for dummies?

Hello, I'm having a bit of a problem of late with some of my character's backstories. I've noticed a trend that the character's parents are either dead, absent, or abusive. I really want to fix this but the error is because of my own abusive experience, so I'm not sure how to write a loving family. And just to be clear, this is mainly in regards to my MC's where their childhood plays a role in the story. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Hey. I understand what youre talking about, cause i have the same problem. I am literally incapable of writing happy, blood related families. I just cant do it.
My advice to you:
Dont force yourself. You dont have to write perfect happily families. Write broken families. Write dysfunctional families. Write remade families and unconventional families. If you force yourself to write a perfect happy family when you dont want to? Its gonna read unhappy anyway. Anything forced will read badly. Write what comes naturally to you.
However, some tips on writing a happy family:
-open, honest comminication amongst family memembers. Lies and secrets tend to give the idea of a bad or unhappy family.
-Trust is essential in every relationship
-Privacy. Both children and parents deserve privacy. A lack of can create mistrust and tension.
-Quality time. Let them spend time together. Eating meals together. Grocery/ clothes shoping together. Watching t.v or movies together. Vacations together. Let parents help with homework. Let kids help with chores. Have hobbies together. Just let them spend time together.
-Respect. Kids need to respect their parents, and parents need to respect their kids. A lack of respect in any relationship will cause tension.
-Kindness and compassion. Be nice to your parents and dont let your parents be mean to you. Go out of your way to make sure you love your family, and make sure you know they love you in return.
-Empathy and understanding. Your parents and your family are people. They have pasts they have feelings and thoughts. Treat them like it. There is often so much more to them then you know. Try to understand what they have had to and are going through. And they need to understand their kids situations as well.
-Support. Be there. No matter what it is. Be there for your family. Have their backs through thick and thin, but only as long as they have yours.

Writing Extreme Characteristics
✍️ It can be really tricky to pull off writing characters with extreme traits 🙊 but never fear–here is how (and how not) to do that 💃

A couple of weeks ago, Jurassic World was on t.v., and I watched the starting of it. Now, I like that movie, but from a writing perspective, there are a few things about it that, for me, make it feel like it was written by an intermediate writer rather than a professional, Hollywood screenwriter. One of those things is Claire’s characterization. Within the first few minutes, the film shows us (basically back-to-back) multiple instances that illustrate how distant and cold Claire is to other living things. Dinosaurs, people she works with, family members, one-time love interests. She doesn’t even understand why it’s a problem the I. Rex has no socialization.
Claire isn’t just kind of distant and cold.
She’s really distant and cold.
Those attributes of her are extreme.
Most human beings aren’t that extreme. Sometimes when I’m writing, I have to remind myself that very rarely is someone 100% anything. Instead, it’s more like human beings have boundaries. It’s the villain who is killing people left and right, but then opens a can of cat food for a stray feline. It’s the hero who swears he’ll never kill anyone, but when he can’t find a way out and wants to protect other innocents, he pulls the trigger. The other day I was researching how Thomas Jefferson owned one of the largest plantations and yet spoke out against slavery.
When you boil behaviors down like these, it feels quite hypocritical or at least contradictory, but that’s because we’ve cut out the thought processes and details and complexities. The realities are that all of us have characteristics that have conditions or boundaries. As I’ve said before, smashing contrasts in characters, and then exploring those is how we create complexity. Political opinions aside, let’s look at Thomas Jefferson as an example, a real human being. Jefferson spoke out against and fought slavery, but he also had a tremendous amount of debt, and didn’t think it was helpful to simply release slaves with no place to go or no means of employment. The more you dig into his relationship with slavery the more you can follow his perspective, whether or not you agree (again, just using him as an example of a real human being like this).
But once in a while you run into characters who are walking extremes. And they can be very difficult to write, simply because of what I’ve just talked about. If they don’t have boundaries and conditions, and they are extreme, they often don’t feel complex. They may feel unreal or flat.
Claire has a character arc, and yet, when I watch her on screen, she still feels rather flat to me. Part of this is because she’s so extreme. The other part is that the filmmakers made the mistake of illustrating the same extreme characteristic back-to-back-to-back, moment after moment, scene after scene. It almost feels as if distance and coldness are the only characteristics Claire has.
I’ve said this a lot lately: hitting the same thing over and over in a story doesn’t make it stronger to the audience, it makes it weaker.
Because Claire is so distant and cold, we really only needed one or two (and definitely no more than three) moments that showed us that in the beginning, not 100. We get it.
Something like that might work in an “unreality” story, like a Dr. Seuss book or Lemony Snicket, where seeing it back-to-back is sorta of tongue-in-cheek or comical or serves a higher purpose in and of itself, beyond the character.
So how do you make an extreme character work?
If you have an extreme character, it’s almost always important (as it is with any character) to give them multiple dominating qualities.
(Sorry, not sorry, but I recently saw Hamilton and loved it, so I’ll probably be referring to it in some of my posts.)
Hamilton is extreme as well. In fact, I heard his thematic line (“I’m not throwing away my shot!”) so many times that I was sick of it before I even gave the musical a chance (now that I’m familiar with the story, it doesn’t bother me). It’s an important line and characteristic because it relates directly to the theme and his character arc. And he’s extreme. Hamilton never says no to an opportunity to move ahead and doesn’t consider opportunities and lifestyles that he views as stagnant–he’s determined not to throw away his shot, regardless of what others–Burr or Eliza or Angelica or George Washington–say or imply to him.
It’s extreme. Like Claire, when we meet him, he’s in it 100%.
But it’s not his only dominating attribute that we are introduced to.
We get plenty of others. He’s “obnoxious, arrogant, loud,” a powerful writer, ambitious to the point of being a workaholic, and popular with the ladies ;)
We now have several characteristics to hit and play with through the story, rather than his most extreme.
If you have a main character that has an extreme attribute, it’s highly likely it’s going to come into play in the character arc (aka how the character grows). If the extreme attribute doesn’t relate primarily to the arc, it will probably be secondary to it.

See, the problem with people who aren’t in wheelchairs writing about and/or drawing people who are in (manual) wheelchairs is that the people who aren’t in wheelchairs tend to think that there’s only like four movements that you do in a wheelchair. You can either push forward, push backwards, turn left, or turn right. And the characters do it all while sitting up straight or bending forward so that their noses touch their knees.
But the amount of motions that I go through on a daily basis are actually amazing. And the body language…you could write an entire book on the body language of someone in a wheelchair.
Like right now, I’m more relaxed, so I’m slouching slightly. I’ve got my right foot on its footrest and the left foot on the ground. Every so often, as I stop to think of something to say, I’ll push with my left foot to rock the chair slightly.
But usually, I sit mostly upright with my upper-half slightly leaned forward. When I’m wheeling across the campus, especially if I have somewhere that I need to be, I’ll lean and shift my weight in whichever direction it is that I’m going. It helps make the wheelchair glide that much more smoothly. How far/dramatically I lean depends on how fast I’m going, the terrain, if there’s a turn, etc.
Plus people who don’t use wheelchairs don’t understand the relationship between grabbing the wheels, pushing, and the chair moving. Like I’ve seen things written or have seen people try to use a chair where the character/that person grabs the wheel every single second and never lets go to save their lives. Which isn’t right. The key is to do long, strong, pushes that allow you to move several feet before repeating. I can usually get about ten feet in before I have to push again. It’s kind of like riding a scooter. You don’t always need to push. You push, then ride, then push, then ride, etc.
And because of this, despite what many people think, people in wheelchairs can actually multitask. I’ve carried Starbucks drinks across the campus without spilling a single drop. Because it’s possible to wheel one-handed (despite what most people think), especially when you shift your weight. And if I need to alternate between pushing both wheels, I’ll just swap hands during the ‘glide’ time.
I’ve also noticed that people who don’t use wheelchairs, for some reason, have no idea how to turn a wheelchair. It’s the funniest thing. Like I see it written or, again, have seen people ‘try’ a wheelchair where they’re reaching across their bodies to try to grab one wheel and push or they try to push both wheels at the same time and don’t understand. (For the record, you pull back a wheel and push a wheel. The direction that you’re going is the side that you pull back.)
Back to body language. Again, no idea why most people think that we always sit upright and nothing else. Maybe when I’m in meetings or other formal settings, but most of the time, I do slightly slouch/lean. As for the hands…A lot of writers put the wheelchair user’s hands on the armrests but the truth is, most armrests sit too far back to actually put your hands on. There are times when I’ll put my elbows on the edges of the armrests and will put my hands between my legs. Note: Not on my lap. That’s another thing that writers do but putting your hands in your lap is actually not a natural thing to do when you’re in a wheelchair, due to the angle that you’re sitting and the armrests. Most of the time, I’ll just sort of let my arms loosely fall on either side of the chair, so that my hands are next to my wheels but not grabbing them. That’s another form of body language. I’ve talked to a few people who have done it and I do it myself. If I’m ever anxious or in a situation where I want to leave for one reason or another, I will usually grip my handrims - one hand near the front , one hand near the back. And if I’m really nervous, you’ll find me leaning further and further into the chair, running my hands along the handrims.
Also, on a related subject - a character’s legs should usually be at 90 degree angles, the cushion should come to about their knees, and the armrests should come to about their elbows. You can always tell that an actor is not a wheelchair user when their wheelchair isn’t designed to their dimensions. (Their knees are usually inches away from the seats and are up at an angle, the armrests are too high, etc.) Plus they don’t know how to drive the chair.
Let’s see, what else? Only certain bags can go on the back of the chair without scraping against the wheels, so, no, your teenagers in wheelchairs can’t put their big, stylish, purses on the back. We don’t always use gloves since most gloves actually aren’t that helpful (as stated above, wheeling is a very fluid motion and gloves tend to constrict movements). Height differences are always a thing to remember. If you’re going for the “oh no, my wheelchair is broken” trope, nobody really has ‘flat’ tires anymore thanks to the new material for the wheels but it is possible to have things break off. We use the environment a lot. I always push off of walls or grab onto corners or kick off of the floor etc. Wheelchair parkour should really become a thing.
This is all of the physical things to think about. I could write a thesis on the emotional treatment of your characters with disabilities. But for now, I think that I’ll stop here. For my followers in wheelchairs, is there anything that I left out?
Also why isn’t wheelchair parkour a thing? Somebody make wheelchair parkour a thing.
