MAGAZINE REVIEW
VROOM LAB JOURNAL ISSUE ONE
The magazine is VROOM LAB Journal issue one. It is a magazine that has been going since 2006 and showcases work from different places through the UK. It feels aimed towards students to get information from different artists and to showcase work through the magazine.
I feel like Vroom magazines are a good source to get new artists and learn new information. However, I feel like the layout of the magazine is strange as there are some pages with little to no pictures to show what the magazine is talking about. There is just a strange blank space to the left of some pages where they could have easily fit some images to showcase more work. I donāt know if it is just an issue with the pdf but its very off putting for me looking through the magazine, on the other hand the information and journal entries from the artists are insightful and a good read.
Although I feel like the pages are laid out in a strange way I feel as though the cover of the magazine is very appealing by showing different artwork as the cover rather than just having a title and nothing else.
I also like the theme of the magazine to give illustration students studying their chance to get their work out to the wider public and possibly get clientele from the magazine itself. It is nice to see a different variety of artists working within the magazine the further you look through. I like how the magazine gives the artists the freedom to talk about their work and what they have created rather than just having questions to answer. It means they can talk about whatever they want within their work. I suppose that is how it works considering the magazine is just a journal that the artists have made to be put into the magazine. Each artist gets their own space for representation. It also represents their place of study in a good way because it shows the variety of work that the place encourages and lets the upcoming artists create.
I like how each journal shows the work that they have created as well as the work that inspired them.
That being said, I think it is a good magazine in itself but I would not buy it simply due to the way it is laid out. The text is clunky and the pictures are placed strangely. Although all of the pictures and information are interesting and important I feel like the imagery is put towards the back in place for the text, I suppose itās a journal but imagery is still nice to see more of to coincide with the text.
There are even some pages within the magazine that involve no imagery at all but have a large white area where imagery could be stored to go along with the information. I feel like they havenāt thought about space management very well when creating the magazine issue.

REFLECTIVE PRACTICE
WEEK 37 22-5-25
This week myself, Nathan and David have focused on getting our work mounted and cut up for final show. The prints look amazing in the frames, and I am very happy with how they have turned out for final show. The foam board cut up seemed like a bit of a struggle at the time but once it was all done it looks really good and fits the images nicely. Since this week is also hand in week, I have been compiling all of my work into pdfs for hand in. the comic is all together, but I have had to split it into three or four parts due to teams only taking 500MB per file and my comic was nearing 2GB due to the amount of pages and work being made for it.
The hand in went smoothly but I had to rearrange some things and hand it in again since I forgot to hand in the portfolio at first due to having no more space to add work.
I am so happy with how this year has gone, a years of comic work has come to an end and I am amazed with what I have created in the space of time given to create the work. I never thought Iād have gotten to this point with the project when I was creating the layouts which is why I stopped after a certain point because I thought Iād not have enough time to get it all completed and handed in on time. But I did, and I couldnāt be more pleased with how each comic has turned out.

WEEK 36 ā 15-5-25
This week I have spent time making stickers and colouring more of nathans pages. The final show prep has started for everyone but I am sorted with all of my stuff, myself and David just need to mount the pictures into A3 frames and also cut down the large images onto foam board. Hopefully this is all completed by next week then it means I can spend the last week focusing on reflective practice and my final hand in for all projects. This year has went by quickly and if I were to do it all over again I think id spend more time getting reflective practice done on time when it needed to be done rather than leaving time then doing multiple weeks at once. But at the time I didnāt think about that because I was busy working on the comic rather than looking into reflective practice. I had done some tasks for reflective but lost them through the year, I donāt know where they went but I definitely done them. Especially inputs and outputs. But if I have a week spare I am going to try my hardest to go back and complete majority of the tasks.
This week I am looking to get all of my work completed and put together into one pdf file showcasing everything I have done with the comic and side projects. Since myself and Nathan are not completing the mural in time for hand in my only hand in for that project will be the sketch and the proposal that we sent off to the heads of college.

WEEK 35 ā 8-5-25
My comic has been printed, shipped and delivered. This week I am going to focus on packing the comics and creating packs to sell with stickers, comics and business cards. My business cards arrived with the comic and is essentially in the same likeness as the comic so people know the work I have made. I have roughly around 10 issues to put into the shop as the other issues I have already sold or handed in for the project hand in. Overall, I think this year has been incredibly successful compared to the other years.
This week I have also printed off all of my prints for final show, 10 A3 sheets and 3 large A1 sheets. The plan is to show the layout work next to the final pieces then on another wall have 2 large A1 posters along with an A1 title cut out and hanging from the ceiling. These next few weeks will mostly be spent making sure I have everything for final hand in and sorting through stuff for the final show and making sure all of my work is completed on time before we go away because im not here for the show prep. I have however left a layout plan for my final show as well as gotten everything printed weeks before its due to be completed so I am set and on target to be handing in on the 25th.
While completing my own work I have been helping around to make sure everyone in my friend group is on track to hand in on time, I have helped and pushed Nathan to take more care with his work for hand in as well as pushed him to make stickers to sell for his comic as I feel his work would look great as stickers.
I have helped all 3 years while also staying on track with my own work and I am glad that I can help people while focusing on my projects because it means theyāre also on track. I only help the people I care about though, the ones that didnāt bother to help with the window are getting no help.

Comic Inspiration - Daniel Warren Johnson
Daniel warren Johnson is an American comic artist known for his work in the ongoing Transformers comic series as well as Wonder Woman Dead Earth. His art style is one of the main inspirations for my own work within the comic, specifically later on in the comic where the lines get thicker and more graphic. This is to make the work bolder, Daniel Warren uses the thick ink style in his work to show weight and graphic sequences in his stories. I have specifically started to take inspiration from Daniel warren later in the comic when it starts to lean into more action centric parts of the story. I have used it to show detailed action sequences and to show the more intense parts of my comic. The brushes that I have used throughout the comic matched the style of Johnsons work so I decided to adapt my own style to match his thick detailed style and overall, I think I have done a good job.

REFLECTIVE DIARY
WEEK 34 ā 1-5-25
My comics have been delivered this week and the quality of them is very good especially for being near enough £16 per copy. I am going to spend the rest of the year getting everything sorted for final show and also work on my thematic essay. While also doing my reflective presentation for the end of the year. I am going to order more issues of the comic due to people asking for copies and there not being enough to go into the shop. The next batch of comics will only be printed in paperback, so I created a different cover to go along with it and honestly, I prefer it to the hardback copy cover. I feel like if I were to do it again id have swapped around the covers to have the paperback cover as the hardback. I also wish I took more time creating a new cover for the hardback rather than using one of the pages and editing it.
Overall with the work I have created within this year I think my work on the comic is a standout, from the sketches at the beginning it is crazy to see how far I have developed the comic into its final state. I have also had Jane, Leesh and Nathan create covers for the comic which I will be sending off for with MIXAM once again as individual variant issues that I can sell at the shop. Itās a nice way to showcase their work rather than just sticking it in the back of the graphic novels as variant cover art.
These next few weeks I will be focusing on final show preparation due to going away at the end of the month. I have a plan all set out I just need to print and frame all of the prints.

WEEK 32 ā 17-4-25
I have focused on making covers for the Krunch issues one and two this week due to being completed my own comic. I have just been helping around the group for people who are struggling while also doing my own projects. I feel like with how I have been working I will get everything handed in on time other than the mural which will be completed in the May half term.
The covers for nathans comic were created closely with what Nathan has created, the colours and my own style were created on my own terms due to the lack of colour within nathans comic. I feel like I have done a good job with bringing the comic to life through the use of colour, after creating the pieces I got nathans opinions and he felt the same about the covers⦠so much so that he is going to print off variant covers and sell them at the final show shop.

WEEK 31 ā 10-4-25
Now that I have completed my comic I can now focus on the other projects I had to create. So I went back and created variant covers for Nathans comic for the AOI book awards.
This week we have also found out that the mural project is being thrown around by the heads of illustration and the college so it is all over the place for that project at the minute. We have sent off the proposal to the college but they are making excuses to delay the project getting done so now at this point in the year I donāt think we will get the project completed in time for hand in or at all if they delay it further.

REFLECTIVE DIARY
WEEK 30 ā 3-4-25
After completing the comic last week I have been creating my portfolio for hand in with all of my work. This is collecting everything from the past few years on the course. So far it is going pretty well and I feel I am adding the best pieces of work to the portfolio to show. I have also been colouring some of Nathans KRUNCH comic to create stickers for his comic and for myself. I am happy with how the comic pages are looking as I feel it really brings it all together. I was given permission by Nathan to colour the pages as he sent me the files for them.
The portfolio is a collection of work from within the course as well as a few pieces created within my own time, this is because I had some pieces such as the fantastic mr fox poster that I wanted to get out to the public more so I decided to slip other pieces into the book to fill it in. overall I am very pleased with how my portfolio is looking, especially with the front cover as I decided to draw all of the type work out rather than using a font found online. The cover is created to look like my latest project on KRUM. This is because majority of the work towards the end of the portfolio becomes my comic work and focuses on what I have created for my comic and others.

WEEK 29 ā 27-3-25
I have officially completed the comic! I have been working on the final designs since January, and I am so pleased to be finished. As much as I have enjoyed creating the comic I have felt like I have had no down time since beginningĀ the project. However, I couldnāt be happier with how the final product has turned out. The work has been sent off via MIXAM and I am now Ā£200 down. I hope the quality is worth it for what I have sent off as I plan to sell the final comics at the final show. Due to it being a big project, I decided to get it sent off in hardback with a ribbon. Once I finished the comic I decided to go back through and use the new title to create a front cover page and a back page + spine. These as a whole took me about 3 hours to create as photoshop was melting my laptop due to how much pressure I was putting on the application.
Once my comic arrives in hardback from MIXAM I will be checking for the quality of each issue. If the quality is good I will be sending off for more issues but this time in paperback as I feel I donāt have the funding to print any more hardback issues due to spending so much on the project. But I am very happy and I feel like the money that I have spent on the project has been worth every penny. The comic itself looks amazing digitally and I am amazed that I was the one who created it. But, I feel like it could look even better physically.

REFLECTIVE DIARY
WEEK 28 ā 20-3-25
I am now onto the final chapter of the story, I plan to cut down a few fight pages due to the time of the year and I donāt know the work around for how quick it is to get the comic printed and shipped with MIXAM. However,, I am very pleased with how my comic has worked out and I am proud of myself for what I have created in the time that I have been given this year. While creating the final chapter I have also focused on creating a new title for the comic because I feel like the original title isnāt threatening or scary enough for the themes of the story.
The new title has more of a rough look to it and I feel it is more fitting to the story due to the rough look. I feel like because it looks rough it gives a horror feel to the comic especially once added to the cover which is exactly what im going for. Due to the comic being about what if hell came to earth it is very fitting and I feel like I couldnāt have created a better title in my own opinion. I am very happy with the upgrade because I feel like the original title font style was too bulky and childish compared to the new one.

WEEK 27 ā 13-3-25
I am about mid way through chapter four of the story, and I am working hard to be completed by the end of next week so I can move onto chapter five which is the final confrontation in the story where everything comes together to an end. While working towards the final chapters of the story I am going to get a start on final show prep now that I have majority of the story created to be shown in final show. I will also be making more stickers and preview copies for the paper jam shop in the easter holidays.
The copies will be created through Repro as the quality is good enough for a preview copy but once it gets to final show the comics will be sent off with a proper publisher because I feel that although repro is good its not a high quality for final hand in.

REFLECTIVE DIARY
WEEK 26 ā 6-3-25
This week I have taken time away from the comic to focus on getting stuff sorted for reflective practice. Focusing on the tasks that need to be completed. I am not enjoying it one bit as it is a complete step away from what is my final hand in project, but it needs to be done. I am doing it due to being behind on my tasks. Although I am focusing on reflective practice, I am also creating stickers to go along side my comic. Next week I will be focusing on the comic again to get it completed and sent off by mid march. If I donāt succeed in mid March my focus and deadline I have set for myself to be completed the comic is by the end of march and hopefully get sent off for the comic via MIXAM in early April. Reflective practice is going well with my catching up but I feel like it is not a very helpful way to get my work completed on time because of all the tasks that are within the course. However, I have completed majority of the tasks.

REFLECTIVE DIARY
WEEK 25 ā 27-2-25
This week I have concluded the third chapter of my story, and I am moving onto the final parts of the story, this should take me about another couple of weeks to complete but I am excited with what I am creating as I feel that it is the best piece of work I have created on this course. The third chapter was a bit clunky in areas due to the lack of layout pages since I stopped with taking too much time but I cracked through it and managed to get it all finished on time for the next chapter to be started, now that I am at this point I think all my timing to the learning plan is going smoothly as ill finish the comic with time to spare to get it printed and published for hand in.
The story so far is exactly how I wanted it and the way that it is building up I feel flows well especially within the themes and style of the story. Everything ties together nicely with what I have created, and I hope it stays that way all the way through till the end of the story. At this point I am roughly around 65 pages into the comic and if I aim to get 70-80 pages completed for the story then I feel like everything is on track to be completed to the best standard possible given the time frame and other projects I am having to create and take part in.
