I had written this in my first year of college for an English class.
PREJUDICE.
Prejudice is not an innate human trait. When we are born we harbour nothing but love in our hearts. A newborn doesn't discriminate on the basis of race, gender or social class. However, when raised in a toxic and hateful environment, that newborn will grow to loathe others due to their differences. The only way that prejudice thrives is when it is taught. If we condemn the act of teaching prejudice, then it will cease to exist.
Multifarious forms of prejudice run rampant because of the preconceived notions of others that have been drilled into people's heads. For example, a white lady will most likely clutch her purse when a black male teenager walks by because of how the news and other media outlets negatively portray our black males. This is racial prejudice, which is the first form of prejudice we often think of when we hear the word "prejudice".
Another example of how malicious stereotypes and twisted narratives can perpetuate prejudice is The Holocaust. Hitler manipulated the Germans into believing that the Jews were inferior, and would pollute the pure Aryan race. As a result of Germany's newfound prejudice for the Jews, millions of innocent people were slaughtered and almost wiped from the face of the Earth. With the help of prejudice, Hitler was able to commit genocide.
Most people allow these prejudices to brew inside of them because they don't take the time to understand a different race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, and etc. How can someone truly know another person if all they've been taught are harmful stereotypes about said person? The generational cycle of prejudice stops now. We need to be mindful of our own prejudice, and prevent them from tainting our children's mindset. We were not born to be filled with hatred and bitterness for others. So, let us not continue to allow prejudice to shape our way of life.

Hereās a snippet of a story that I started writing back in 2022. Itās not finished, but Iām planning on finishing it sometime next year.
CH. 1 ā THE NIGHT COMES DOWN
August, 1973
Strumming my pain with his fingers, singing my life with his wordsā¦
Roberta Flackās dulcelet, euphonious voice drifted throughout the otherwise silent car. Softly, Jeremiah began to hum along to the bittersweet tune. Although he wasnāt the biggest fan of Ms. Flack, Jeremiah couldnāt help but to acknowledge the genuine emotion put into the song. Every lyric and note worked in tandem, tugging ever so gently at the listenerās heartstrings. Jeremiah felt as if he were in the place of the narrator.
I felt all flushed with fever, embarrassed by the crowdā¦
Jeremiah slowed his vehicle to a halt as the traffic light switched from its cautionary yellow to red. The young man sat back in his seat, closing his eyes and letting Ms. Flackās soothing vocals flow through him.
Jeremiah pictured himself in the audience of a small, intimate concert. The other audience members were out of focus, but, clear as crystal, Jeremiah watched the man on stage singing his heart out. Singingā¦to him. The man seemed to have searched the very depths of Jeremiahās soul, regurgitating every secret and memory to him. Jeremiah wanted to retreat from the biographical lyrics, but he couldnāt find the strength to run. His only choice was to wait for the man to finish singing.
Telling my whole life with his wordsā¦
The loud, abrupt honk! honk! from a nearby car jolted Jeremiah from the confines of his mind. He saw that the light had turned green, and started driving again.
Killing me softly with his song.
A wave of despair washed over Jeremiah once the song was over. Jeremiah wished he could replay the song on an endless loop, and lose himself in Ms. Flackās intricate storytelling. Maybe he would buy the entire album. If Killing Me Softly With His Song could leave him spellbound, Jeremiah had faith in the rest of Ms. Flackās musical repertoire.
After the unnecessarily long intermission, Elton Johnās Daniel began playing. Daniel was Jeremiahās favourite Elton John track, however, the young man found himself thrown off by someone walking unsteadily off in the distance. Jeremiah squinted his amber eyes, trying to make out the possibly distressed stranger. With the assistance of the awfully bright streetlight, Jeremiah was finally able to get a good look at the person as he pulled up to the curb.
Mascara streaked tears stained the manās cheeks while the high humidity had caused his long, voluminous sea of ebony hair to become a frizzy mess. Despite the manās dishevelled appearance, a spark of recognition came to Jeremiah almost immediately.
āWhat in the hellā¦ā Jeremiah muttered under his breath. A note of concern was evident in his tone.
Jeremiah had met Giles Barker in Art History last year. He remembered staring unabashedly at the Englishman with pastel blue eyeshadow and wing tipped eyeliner. Aside from musicians like David Bowie or Little Richard, Jeremiah hadnāt yet come face to face with a man who freely and openly embraced characteristics associated with femininity.
Giles also had a habit of referring to people as āhoneyā or āsweetheartā. Though others may have found this form of address peculiar, especially when spoken by a man, Jeremiah thought Gilesā eccentricities made him a unique individual. He wasnāt another straight laced conformist whose entire personality was equivalent to wet cardboard. He was a magnetic and intrepid person who wasnāt afraid to be unapologetically himself.
On the occasion where words were exchanged between the two men, Jeremiah found himself taking a liking to Giles. It was strange because Jeremiah rarely liked people these days. Especially people he had only known for a short period of time.
Jeremiah lowered his window as he cruised alongside Giles. āUm, are you alright?ā He asked awkwardly.
āMe? Oh! Iām just peachy. Canāt you tell, honey?ā Giles retorted. His voice was uncharacteristically monotone, and his speech was noticeably slurred.
An exasperated sigh escaped Jeremiahās lips. āLook,ā he spoke. āThereās no need to be crabby. I was trying to make sure you were okay.ā
Giles stopped in his tracks, turning to face Jeremiah.
