Reflection on Principles of Animation &“Mercury”
The film “Mercury” immediately reminded me of the movie “Coraline” because of their similar stylistic drawings. From thin lines that evoke a sense of unstableness and exaggerated body features, including faces, drawing styles of both films give off horror-movie-like feelings. This, again, reminded me of the importance of considering thickness of lines and staging (whether to leave the background blank or fill it in with realistic setting). Also, as not much exaggeration in motion were present, I was able to pay good amount of attention not only to the visuals, but also to the audio, which I think was very effective in “Mercury” communicating quite complex context of the short film.

05/04/2020 Project #6 Progress
I will be using option 1: digitally drawing the animation in Photoshop, squash and stretch method, pose to pose method, and staging method. Next post is my storyboard.

04/27/2020 Project #5 Progress
In the process of editing the audio that I had my friend read for me, I realized there were background noise, like people talking, that may be recognizable and decided to trim it into short clips, sometimes word by word, in order to make the sound more clear. Thus, the audio sounded a bit disjointed because of the parts without audio, which I could solve by recording an additional audio of white-noise and lowering the volume of it, in order to add a continuous, consistent, smooth, not-distracting sound in the background.
For images, I have decided to create another “visual experience” that the viewers can experience through while listening to the text. It would be a “visual poetry” of the narration - one that parallels/correlates to the text, but also having its own story, through a particular way of sequencing of images.

Spirited Away and its Videography
There are so many details in each frame throughout the film to look into. Sometimes we see hundreds of different creatures in one, and we can tell that so much attention has been put into every single part, even in the corners and the background.
However, Miyazaki once said “the people who make the movies are scared of silence, so they want to paper and plaster it over. They’re worried that the audience will get bored. But just because it’s 80 percent intense all the time, doesn’t mean the kids are going to bless you with their concentration. What really matters is the underlying emotions – that you never let go of those.”
He then said that scenes where nothing really happens are called “ma” – or emptiness – and interestingly it is the “ma” moments that have become iconic over time. Scenes of Chihiro standing on the balcony looking lost and Chihiro looking lost on a train. They might not be very eventful visually but are emotionally well-constructed (there is a sense of emptiness) and I think this is one of the main elements that makes the movie so rich and well-made.

04/13/2020 Chris Marker’s La Jetee
I am not quite sure of what the plot of La Jetee exactly is about and what each images directly tells us of the plot. Personally, I was more drawn into artistic strategies that Chris Marker uses in this work. At first, it wasn’t obvious to me that the artist was using still images only. Zooming in and out of a photo, from a point to another, gave it a video-like effect, confusing my eyes as if there was a “real” movement going on; the images did not look entirely still. Background sound, or white noise, that was layered with the narration also made the images look more “realistic” and showed how closely our visionary sense is related to our auditory sense. Light played a huge role in adding “liveliness” to all images as well, especially because all of them are black and white. As all such includes two or more basic human senses, rather than a single sense, I also saw a relation to the ideas I am trying to convey in project #5: of human vision and unconsciousness.

04/13/2020 Project 5 Progress
My biggest concern right now is how descriptive / narrative I should be with the images I will be using for the video. As of now, I am planning on doing digital photography as my medium (may be using black and white or color, not sure yet). Because the writing - an excerpt from John R. Searle’s “Seeing Things As They Are” - itself already is very commanding and directional, I was thinking of avoiding using images that sync with the writing’s context. However, as the text is also abstract in a way, that it discusses the relation of our vision and knowledge - areas that are not completely definable - I also don’t want the images to be too indirect. I feel like choosing objects / subjects / scenes to take photos of would be the most difficult part of the project.
Maybe I can make a series of photographs that has its own story, but under the theme of “human vision and unconsciousness; how what we know affects what we see”, which then I’ll have more options to visualize my ideas through, without having to only relying on Searle’s writing.

03/01/2020 Project Two Progress
Thinking about myself, I took a time to reflect on my everyday life and realized the amount of time I spend on my devices, looking at a digital screen, is tremendous. In such way, my computer screen not only reflects a lot of my daily time consumption, interests, but also habits as well: I am always connected to bluetooth earphones listening to music, low on battery, unorganized with documents, watch the same movie over and over (my recent obessession has been Call Me by Your Name”), and take a lot of screenshots of things I like, which includes pasta and Nick Mauss’s paintings. With having a photo with my friends as the wall paper, it also shows how my mind and emotion tend to relate heavily on people around me.
