Days of the week in Korean

In Korean we add to words and expressions related to time (hour, minute, days, year, month, time of the day), a time particle -에:

저는 월요일에 일해요.

I work on Mondays.

It simply indicates when our action takes place or when something happens.

We use it when we are talking about events as well:

크리스마스에 제 가족을 만나요.

I meet my family during Christmas. (when?)

However, we never attach it to the words as 오늘 (today), 어제 (yesterday), 그제 (the day before yesterday), 내일 (tomorrow), 모레 (the day after tomorrow), 매일 (every day)...

(ㅇ) 오늘 날씨가 좋아요.

The weather is nice today.

( X ) 오늘에 날씨가 좋아요. <----- Wrong! 틀려요!

There are many ways, for example:

✦ 어느 나라 분이세요? (very polite, 분 - hon. a person)

✦ 어느 나라 사람이에요? (polite)

✦ 어디에서 오셨어요? (very polite)

✦ 어디에서 왔어요? (polite)

These forms are used in unofficial situations in daily life.

So, how to answer this question?

✦ 저는 미국 사람이에요.

[I'm an American.]

Country name + 사람 (person)

Or:

✦ 저는 미국에서 왔어요.

[I come from the USA.]

Country name+에서 왔어요

To sum up, a short dialogue:

A: 어느 나라 분이세요?

B: 저는 중국 사람이에요.

On the other hand, we attach "-예요", after a vowel:

저 동물은 카피바라예요. (ㅏ is a vowel)

That animal is a capybara.

(quite polite but might sound too direct)

(Could you please give me some money?)

The best option to use is... 3rd one!

It sounds most polite because it's an question.

Among fruits, I like strawberries the most.

This grammar phrase is really common in Korean when we speak about our preferences, likes/dislikes. Instead of 과일, you can add anything else.

But if you want to say that you don't like something, use instead:

좋아하지 않아요 or 싫어해요 (싫어해요 is more direct, bold to say).
