I think the show kept saying things I already internalized years ago, and thereby the message was lost on me. I've never once idolized princes or thought cars are cool. I was disillusioned with masculinity from the start, and I've never seen the world through the rose tinted glasses of an innocent young girl. I was, from the start, a broken girl, twisted into a man's shape, and I unpacked and moved past the whole gender thing years ago by now. The shadowplay did not compel me, since I was never welcome in Plato's cave.

When I don't understand a show I simply accept that it's my fault. I watch a Utena scene where a guy has his jacket open and my beautiful girlfriend tells me that means he just had sex but it went over my head because I'm stupid and I believe her
#as a film student I wish more people were like this#Like you don't have to engage with something super deeply or “get it” or whatever#but so many people try to insist that their lack of knowledge is the only right answer and actually other people thinking too hard about it
