And now for something completely different…14th century plague Copia. The clothes are based on mid 14th century chausses, cotehardie, and hood. I tried to make his skin look a little ghastly. I did not draw the background skeletons — they are taken directly from Michael Wolgemut’s “The Death of Dance” (i.e. Dance Macabre!) from 1493 (so technically the end of the following century but was supposedly inspired by the Black Death), and the scrolls are based off an image from a 15th century medieval text. And of course I needed dancing rates.

He stumbled back to his quarters, the afterglow of the ritual rapidly fading. He was sweaty. Sore. He was always sweaty and sore—why did he think it would be any different this time around?
He brought the wash cloth up to his face, and paused. After a moment of hesitation, he started carefully wiping away the unfamiliar parts of the skull paint.
There he was, underneath it all, looking back at himself from the mirror. The same as he had always been.
“Not Papa,” he sighed to himself. “Cardinal.”
An accidental companion series to my last Papa IV piece—look, that initial rush of Post-Coronation BDE Confidence can only last for so long.
This started out as that one painting at the end, and then just… kept going! I am WEAK and full of feelings.

Something I love about Copia is that he's just such a major fucking loser.
And everyone knows it too. I like to think back to when he was visiting Sister in the hospital and that nurse at the reception IMMEDIATELY clocked that this was a fucking idiot she was talking to
I love you Copia, incompetent king, never change

I know they're twins but Perpetua gives such feral younger brother energy to me. He's coming into Copia's room late at night turning all the lights on laying diagonally across Copia on his bed and going can we go get Burger King. When Copia says no he floats up flips him off and hovers out of the room leaving the lights on and the door open

Papa Emeritus IV

I came to realize that his blue papal robe creates such a nice contrast with gold and I couldn't miss the chance to include it in a piece, so decided to take my inspiration from old christian iconography🕯️

Some close ups;
