The #BLACKLIVESMATTER movement is heavily visible on twitter, where it uses its might to not only learn about new injustice, but also bring attention to it.

Interesting idea that social media allows us to break out of our demographic, and how media has to change their scale for reaching out to people

Why Media Needs to Stop Being Passive
With the growth of social media, it is becoming increasingly easier for people to steal or copy content without giving credit to the original creator, it’s as easy as copy and paste, or even just typing out a hashtag. Black Twitter is a victim of this, and their culture is being stolen left and right by media and used for the promotion of media without giving credit specifically to Black Twitter. We assume that when something is trending on Twitter, it is a part of a cultural phenomenon within our culture, in this case, American. But, a lot of the trends on Twitter, such as slang and memes originates on Black Twitter and is hijacked into the American culture without mentioning its origins. This is something that has been occurring forever in the US, specifically. Black culture is stolen for fashion, music, and slang even. When people of color participate in their cultural activities, that originated within their culture they are put down by white people. But, when white people use their culture in their fashion, musical tastes, or slang, it changes to become something more stylish, and “cool”. By stealing these elements of Black Twitters culture without giving credit, the media is remaining passive in a recurring cycle, when it would be more beneficial for the POC community, and the media agencies as well, to give credit and involve Black twitter.

Black Twitter’s capacity to influence may be recognized, but it’s clear that media giants still prefer to pontificate on it from a distance without investing in that influence directly.
