By morning, KITT was still unable to repair any of his systems. Most of them were either failing, offline, or in the case of his memory- it simply seemed to be reset.
Still, he continued to attempt at repairing them, with no success. A rather loud whir was becoming apparent the more he tried to fix them.
Soon he had noticed his location, and that was when he fired up his engine to move to a different space within the small lab type room. He was successful in maneuvering, and more space was freed up between him and VIN.
That was then when he noticed the still-‘asleep’ form of VIN. He was curious as to when he would awake from his sleep-mode, but didn’t bother him, focusing his attention elsewhere.
And that was when the door to the garage-type building could be heard opening.

“I’m not entirely sure that you can help me,” KITT had responded, as he went into the shed first.. then drove down the ramp into the underground room. “I believe it is simply my memory that is not functioning as it should, and you will not be able to gain access to that part.”
Once down in the underground room, KITT was quick to scan his surroundings, taking note of almost everything.. especially the exit.
Though, KITT soon had shut down, right after going into park.. It ended up being around five hours later that he came out of shutdown, and he then noticed that it was around seven in the morning by that point. His systems had tried to repair themselves with no success.
VIN cheerfully followed the other car down. The room below was not unlike a laboratory, with beakers of chemicals and blueprints scattered across desks here and there. There wasn’t much room to move around, so VIN was tucked between KITT and their one exit- not that the former seemed to mind. With his rear tires just barely on the ramp, it kept him well away from his boot.
“Okay, let me see here! Scanning~ Scanning~” Bright eyes searched the lab, darting this way and that before hearing a noise akin to a computer falling asleep. “…KITT? Hello?” Scooting closer, VIN deployed his servo arm from his hood to poke the Mustang a few times.
“…You’re in my spot.”
…
“That’s okay! You’re probably SUPER tired after today! You just rest up! I’ll think of something while you recharge!” It was not meant to be, as before too much longer, VIN had ended up entering his own sleep mode for the night. He wasn’t one to wake up on time, however, so he continued to snooze well into the morning.

It took KITT a few moments, but he soon began to follow VIN to town, unaware that there were multiple people out looking for him already. Of course, everyone at the SSC was in a panic- KITT had gone offline, and they couldn’t find his location no matter what they did.
“Your.. sister?” KITT was unsure of what VIN was talking about, they weren’t exactly humans, so how could he have a brother? He noted that this, VIN, didn’t seem to be very.. well, mature, so excused it as he may not know any better.
When they had eventually arrived to wherever it was they were going, KITT took in the surroundings, making note of how he had gotten there. He planned on remaining in plain sight, because someone had to be looking for him. Something was telling him that he hadn’t been dumped on the side of the road.
“Layne Reed! President of Cedarville Middle School, and the coolest, bestest sister a car could ask for,” VIN spoke highly of the girl, boasting about her achievements as though they were his own. As the two cars drove along the vacant road, he recalled their adventures together, how he helped her scale a cliff to save her friend and cousin, how he helped her embrace a ‘less organized’ mindset, how she saved him on numerous occasions. If his words were anything to go by, it was clear their bond was very tight, even if their siblingship was not biological.
Eventually, they made their way through town and ended up at an unsuspecting house. VIN cruised up the curb and into the lawn, soon finding a dusty path leading to an old shed. The doors were still open from his exit, and the interior had a ramp that led somewhere underground.
Before entering, he paused and positioned himself so his front was angled towards KITT. “While I was talking, I tried calling Cody! …He didn’t answer. Mom and Dad don’t like it when I call them while they’re away, and- Oh! One second!” His windshield mirrored his interior display, showing an image of a young girl along with the text ‘BEST SISTER LAYNE’ and her presumed phone number underneath. “Hey hey, Layne! I need-”
“Not now, VIN… It’s 2 in the morning…” Click.
“…Aaaaand, Layne doesn’t want to help either. …It’s cool! It’s cool! We can, uhh… You know what? I’m a rescue vehicle! I can help you!” He suddenly reversed, allowing KITT to enter the shed first. “I’m sure I can find something down here to fix you up!”

“Perhaps my self diagnostic was incorrect.” KITT simply responded, as his engine soon fired up- loudly, but it was perfectly normal.
He was housed in a Mustang, after all.
“Do you happen to know of someone capable of repairing my systems that are down?”
KITT didn’t know better at the current moment, he only knew that some of his systems had to be down if he wasn’t able to remember anything, and if he couldn’t find his own way to any place.
He couldn’t find the meaning to his name, either. Perhaps this, VIN, had an idea of who his ‘creators’ were. Perhaps he could help him find his way back to where he had come from.
He felt that he was supposed to be doing something still, but could no longer remember what it was.
A thoughtful hum resonated from the little car, and the bright blue eyes on his front shifted upwards as if looking at the sky. “Hmm… Oh oh! Mom and Dad might know how to fix you! …Only they’re out of town. Super secret government business!” He glanced to the road that led to town before suddenly gesturing towards it. “Come on! We can cruise and chat!”
Engine revving, VIN lurched forward a few meters, encouraging the other car to keep up with him as he continued to think aloud. “My sister Layne might know what’s wrong, but she’s not a mechanic or anything… Though she did help me fix me control unit that one time… Oh oh OH! Maybe Cody could help! He’s a mechanic! But, ohhhh, that shop might not be open right now…”
One fact VIN failed to mention was that all of the aforementioned people (save for his supposed parents) were children. Odds were they were asleep at this hour. It was a school night, after all.

“I am the Knight Industries Three Thousand, K.I.T.T for easy reference.. or.. KITT.” KITT wasn’t sure that the short name was what he was called, but it seemed familiar, somehow.
He then went back to scanning the area he was currently in, nothing seemed familiar. How did he get there?
The confusion wouldn’t be wearing off any time soon, and perhaps it would be best that he moved from the side of the road, and at least got into town.
He’d have a better chance at being found by who he belonged to if he was at least in town.
“Which way is it to town? I’m afraid my navigation system is not quite working.”
KITT felt odd for having to ask, for some reason, but soon passed it off. “I believe I may be in need of some repairs.”
“Got it, KITT!” VIN bounded cheerfully back to said car’s side. “Cedarville is just a few miles straight ahead! Take a left, second right, then you’re smack in downtown!”
Instinctively, he began to make his way back to town, only to hear KITT speak up again. A quick three-point turn later, and his bright blue front was facing the other’s. “Waaaait, didn’t you just say your systems were functioning normally a second ago? You did! I have it recorded!”
“I am not broken down, either, all of my systems are functioning normally.”
“Hear that? My audio recorders never lie!”

KITT noticed the vehicle coming quite some time before it came to a stop beside him, though it brought him some more confusion. Was there many more like him? What even was he?
“I don’t recall having an owner.” Came his response after figuring out how to use his voice, he had been unsure if he had one just moments prior. “I am not broken down, either, all of my systems are functioning normally.”
KITT studied this new vehicle that had just about sped right past, and a quick scan revealed quite a bit of information. This car was a lot like him.
But, without all of the weaponry, he noted. He’d found his weaponry after investigating himself for quite some time, discovering many things of which he did not know their function.
He tried to determine his own location, but found that his navigation system, oddly, was not working. How did he not detect that sooner?
“May I ask where exactly I am?”
The little car flinched when he heard the voice, the eye-like features on his grille widening and frantically glancing around before settling back on the Mustang. “Whoa-ho-ho! Hold the phone-ee-OH! You talk too?!”
For a moment, he found himself staring at the other car. He knew for a fact his human mom and dad didn’t construct another car like himself. Yet… Here was this car, akin to him in so many ways. And that was…
“So… COOL!!!!” He bounced excitedly on his wheels, a small display of his autonomy. “Oh!” He nearly missed the question directed to him. “We’re just outside Cedarville! But before we get to all thaaaat~” The smaller vehicle jumped back before doing a quick donut, like the little show-off he was.
“Woo-hoo! The name’s VIN! That’s Vehicle Integrated Neurotech! What’s your name, fellow talking car?”

KITT had.. gotten lost, and that was an understatement.
He had been sent out to pick Mike up from a bar one night, and that was when his so called ‘firewalls’ had dropped just for a few mere moments.
Just long enough for someone to hack into his systems that were normally heavily encrypted to protect them.
They didn’t steal any information, but they did, essentially, do a complete reset on KITT as a whole. His connection to the SSC was severed, and he found himself in the middle of nowhere, with no idea how he had gotten there, or what exactly he was doing there.
But that wasn’t all.
He no longer knew anything besides his name, the Knight Industries Three Thousand.
What that meant? He didn’t know.
So he remained on the side of the road, confused, and conflicted on where he was supposed to go. He was completely, and utterly, lost, in more ways than one.

KITT’s self destruct sequence had been set off.
And there was only a mere thirty minutes until he.. well, blew.
Among other things, KITT was feeling quite betrayed to learn that such a thing had even been programmed. Especially without his knowledge.
During all the chaos, his questions on the subject continued to go unanswered.
It was upsetting, especially when his own creator ignored his questioning.
The timer continued to tick down, and there was no solution to it unless the person who had activated it was found.
There was thousands of employees in the SSC, the chances of them finding that person before his self destruct were very slim.. he knew that.
“Why will no one answer my question? Why was I programmed with a self destruct sequence?”
Again, he was ignored.
