Dit schilderijtje is de helft van een tweeluik dat Bartholomäus Bruyn maakte van het Keulse koppel Elisabeth Bellinghausen en Jacobus Omphalius. Ze bestelden het tweeluik waarschijnlijk ter gelegenheid van hun verloving. Elisabeth houdt in haar hand een takje bitterzoet – in Keulse portretten hét attribuut van ongetrouwde stellen. Ook Elisabeths vlechten wijzen op de verlovingstijd: getrouwde vrouwen droegen hun vlechten ónder hun kapje.
