Happy 23rd birthday to Princess Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant!
Born October 25th 2001, Princess Elisabeth Thérèse Marie Hélène is the heir apparent to the Belgian throne as the eldest child of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium.
Princess Elisabeth received her International Baccalaureate diploma from the UWC Atlantic College in Llantwit Major, Wales in May 2020. She went on to obtain her Bachelor of Arts degree with upper second class honours in July 2024. In May 2024, the Belgian Royal Court announced that Elisabeth was admitted into Harvard Kennedy School to study for a two year master's degree in public policy; she started her studies at Harvard in September 2024.
On 31 August 2020, Elisabeth entered the Royal Military Academy in Brussels, studying social and military sciences, completing her one-year military training on 9 July 2021. For the next two years, she attended the Royal Military Academy's annual three-week summer camps and other practical and theoretical military classes. Elisabeth had one of the highest grades among her class.
Ten years prior to Elisabeth's birth, a new 1991 amendment of the succession line was implemented which introduced absolute primogeniture, defining her as the first in the line of succession since she is the eldest child. Should she ascend as expected, Elisabeth shall become Belgium's first female monarch.

On this day in history, 25 January 1533, Henry VIII of England married his second wife, Anne Boleyn, in secret at Whitehall Palace (Jane Seymour would also marry the king there, in 1536). Archbishop Cranmer wrote to Archdeacon Hawkins that ‘she [Anne] was married much about St Paul’s Day’, which fell on 25 January. The marriage was kept so secret that the usually well-informed Spanish ambassador Eustace Chapuys was writing in March of rumours of a wedding in April.
Some sources suggest, however, that the King and Anne had actually undergone a first marriage ceremony on St Erkenwald’s Day, 14 November 1532, after their return from France. The chronicler Edward Hall wrote:
‘The kyng, after his returne married priuily the lady Anne Bulleyn on sainet Erkenwaldes daie, whiche mariage was kept so secrete, that very fewe knewe it, til she was greate with child, at Easter after’.
Although it is certain that the couple married on 25 January, it seems likely that they had previously undergone a secret ceremony in November 1532, before consummating their union. Anne quickly conceived, for Elizabeth was born the following September. One can only imagine how the couple must have felt. They had been involved in an intensely emotional, spiritual and sexual relationship dating back to 1527, comprised with anxieties, concerns and pressures about when they would finally be able to marry. Some six years later, their dreams were realized. Anne was at the pinnacle of her ambitions, for she had finally risen to England’s queenship, as she had confidently first expected to do in 1527. [x]

On the night of 16-17 July 1918, the Romanov family, faithful attendants, and pet dogs were murdered in a small basement in Ipatiev House, Ekaterinburg.

The Tsar, Tsarina, and their five children, Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexei were killed alongside their attendants, chef Ivan Kharitonov, doctor Yevgeny Botkin, maid Anna Demidova, and footman Aloise ‘Alexei’ Trupp. Tatiana and Anastasia’s beloved dogs, Ortipo and Jimmy, were also killed.

Another member of the entourage who volunteered to join the Romanovs at the Ipatiev House was Alexei’s sailor nanny Klimenty Nagorny, who, after protesting against guards confiscating the thirteen-year-old boy’s chain which held religious icons, was removed from the house and executed. His arrest was observed by Alexei’s foreign tutors, who had been separated from the family. Rather than give them up, Klimenty remained quiet. Other attendants were arrested and later murdered after arriving in Yekaterinburg; Ekaterina Schneider, Anastasia Hendrikova, Ilya Tatishchev, Vasily Dolgorukov, and Ivan Sednev.

The only survivor of the murders at Ipatiev House was Alexei’s dog Joy. The dog, who was referred to in letters as being blind, was found running around the abandoned house and street days later, hungry, thirsty, and confused. Joy was rescued and taken to England.

Weeks later, the children’s languages tutors Pierre Gilliard and Sydney Gibbes entered the basement to find torn up floorboards and blood-splattered walls. The pair contributed to the Sokolov Investigation into the murders, providing and also protecting key evidence.

The Romanov family, alongside their attendants, have been canonised as Martyrs and Holy Passion Bearers in the Orthodox faith. 106 years later, we remember.
All background photographs show the interiors of the Ipatiev House taken for the Sokolov Investigation: the basement, family bedrooms, Demidova’s room, backyard door, and exterior.
