Going through some books and I'm realizing that I've DNF more books this year than actually the amount I actually finished.
It's a little disheartening. 🥲

Me: *agonizing over whether a semicolon goes here, what the proper dialogue should be there, other assorted rules and semantics*
Terry Pratchett: "!" said the stranger.
THAT'S ALLOWED?

As a fic writer, i need every reader to know that:
I don’t care if your comment is coherent. I know what you mean and i love you
I don’t care if you ramble. I read every word and i love you
I don’t care if you leave a comment on a fic from four years ago or leave comments/kudos on like ten of my fics in one go. This isn’t IG, pls stalk my AO3. I love you
I don’t care if you mention the same thing in your comment that four other people have already mentioned. It’s actually really useful to know what resonated with people and I love everyone who takes the time to tell me they liked a particular turn of phrase
I don’t mind if your comment is super long or just a couple of sentences, i love them all
I love you

Spin this wheel first and then this wheel second to generate the title of a YA fantasy novel!
(If the second wheel lands on an option ending with a plus sign, spin it again)
Share what you got!

[In case the image does not load, this is a screenshot of an Instagram post made by actor Timothy Omundson sharing a US toll-free LGBT+ suicide and mental health crisis hotline for at-risk Americans that may be affected by the current administration's recent decisions when it comes to care and resources. As a note, I personally not verified the phone number, but Omundson is generally reputable.
The phone number is 1-877-330-6366, and the image states "Kindness and empathy have no borders."]

Every single fic update there is an author trying frantically to find the right balance between a nonchalant aside of "leave a comment if you enjoyed =)" and clinging desperately to the coat tails of a random stranger, dragging along behind them on the street wailing "Please, please! I have to know what you thought! I'm desperate to talk to people about this! Ask me about the alliterative repetition! Ask me about the symbolism!"

I think watching the movies we forget how totally unhinged the Prancing Pony scene is in the books. Like it’s literally:
Frodo: Right, there’s evil things after me, gotta keep a low profile. Got it everyone? Low profile.
Also Frodo, five minutes later: WITH A PING AND A PONG THE FIDDLE STRINGS BROKE AND THE COW JUMPED OVER THE MOOOOOON!!!! *Dances passionately on the table*
A few minutes and one fall later
Strider: Holy shit Frodo you fucked up so bad.
Frodo: W-what??
Strider: Worse than anything your friends could have done!
Frodo: Who-
Strider: We need to talk, once the clamour has died down.
Frodo: Ok…
Later, in the now deserted and dark pub
Pippin: Did he really say to meet you here?
Frodo: Yeah, maybe-
Strider, sitting in a dark corner: Hello
Hobbits: Ah!
Frodo: Uh, hi, you said you wanted to talk to me?
Strider: Yes, and you might hear something to your advantage.
Frodo: Sure… what do you have to say.
Strider: Many things, but of course I have my price.
Frodo: What price?
Strider: no more than you can afford.
Frodo: And that would be-?
Strider: Take me with you on your journey until I wish to leave.
Frodo: No.
Strider: God, Thank you.
Frodo: Huh?
Strider: At least got some sense left.
Frodo: Um.
Strider: Did no one ever teach you “stranger danger”?
Later
Frodo: Guys, I think we can trust him.
Merry: Source?
Frodo: Vibes.
Merry: Valid source.
Frodo: Also he’s so ugly, there’s only so much damage he can do, you know?
Pippin: 10/10 reasoning.
Sam: I can take him.
Aragorn, probably: Manwe above, I’m not a moment too soon.

I use em dashes all the time in my writing. Have been since I first started writing original stories and fanfiction about 20 years ago.
I think it's important to note that AI is "trained" on humans' writing. I've had Google Docs try to "correct" my grammar with completely incorrect suggestions because said incorrect suggestions are what the AI sees from other folks using Docs.
If AI is "suddenly" using a lot of em dashes, it's because the human writing it is trained on is seeing more em dashes. AI would not suddenly start using em dashes -- or any other certain way of writing or spelling or what-have-you -- on its own. It learns from humans.
Ai couldn't possibly be replacing AO3 writers... right?
Yeah, so I was scrolling on AO3 trying to find a good fic to read, and not every, but noticably enough, of the fics descriptions had that
--Emdash. Long line you put between words.
It's a far fetch to assume that's just something AI would use(because that's where it's mostly found), but I know my shit. I know my fanfics and writeres. It was NOT common before that so many fanfiction writers used it. Sure, you could say that the use of Emdash grew in popularity, but it raises the question of just how many fanfics of those(with the Emdash) were written by humans.
It could be all of them out there. It could be none.
(also, no hate to anyone or anything, just wanna bring it up and ask if some fella has something to say to this🙏🙏)

Glancing at the comments already on this post, I'm sure this is repeated advice -- just write! You can edit a first draft, but you cannot edit a blank page.
There is no writer anywhere who has a perfectly pretty fic or story on the first go. It's a craft, a skill that you practice by doing it. Tumblr's writing and fanfiction communities are usually very supportive, too -- if you have specific questions on formatting and the like, I'm sure most people won't mind answering and giving you a hand.
And if you're still nervous about posting your story online? You can absolutely just write for yourself. I have notebooks full of little fanfictions that are for my eyes alone. They're fun, they're silly, they're self-indulgent, and I had a great time writing them and enjoy rereading them.
Fanfiction itself is a love letter to the source material and it's amazing that fanfiction was created and evolved so much because of love and community. If you love the source material enough to create in the fandom itself, that will shine through in your story.
Happy writing!
OKAY SO!
I have literally no where else to ramble about this so I decided to say fuck it and just put it on here because maybe I could even get some advice because I don't know what the fuck I'm doing at all!
So for like A YEAR I've had this fanfiction idea stuck in my head and I keep thinking about it over and over again and I really wanna write it and put it out there because some other people may enjoy it.
BUT THE ISSUE is that since it's fanfiction I'm so worried about mischaraterizing and the characters being ooc. And it's not just because I'm worried about getting yelled at about it in the comments (even though that's a worry too). It's also for my own sake, I love these characters so much and I wanna do them justice.
And what if it doesn't turn out to be any good at all? It could turn into a total dumpster fire for all I know. But I've also been brewing on this idea for literally so long??? I wanna write it but also don't???
Then there's the hurdle of me never posting any of my writing online, especially not tumbler and I see all this fics that look so pretty and eye-catching and I think to myself "man I wanna write fics that look that pretty" but I literally don't know how? Like most writers have a master list and stuff and I don't know how to do any of that at all and I don't even know where I would begin to try to learn.
I totally feel like a sopping wet cat right now and I have no idea what to do about it 😮‍💨
Gods I need help. I wanna hit my head against a wall.

Reading my own fanfiction is basically just a rollercoaster of emotional whiplash.
20% of the time: “Hold on. I wrote this? This is fire. This is emotionally devastating in the best way. This scene is dripping with tension. I’m a literary perfectionist. Someone give me a book deal.”
80% of the time: “Straight to jail. Immediate prison. Why is everyone’s breath hitching?. I used the word ‘gaze’ three times in one paragraph like I was possessed. Did I think 'his eyes darkened' was profound? Why is everyone clenching their jaws? Why is someone whispering 'their name like a prayer' again?? No one talks like this. What is this dialogue. Why are there so many weird metaphors and em-dashes…”
