It took George Floyd’s murder to realize how easy it is for me to go on about my daily life, momentarily disturbed, but lulled back to sleep by my privilege because I don’t have to fear this type of human destruction on a daily basis. However, I know through other losses I’ve experienced in my life that being broken open can help us be more courageous in our love. Courageous with personal love, sure. But to want unconditional positive regard and an equal playing field for those unlike us, or not in our circle, that is a daily conscious effort. I feel grateful to be alive in a moment where we are finally getting real about the immensity of racial disparity and its violent effects that disproportionately affects Black citizens, but everyone suffers. We can choose to muster the will to usher in a more perfect union of equality of opportunity. I feel the most patriotic way to celebrate this day is to look within and ask myself how have I still been sleeping, how can I grow and meaningfully act to support, and not squander the hope of this time.
