Being Gay is NOT a choice

In society and our media, the argument that “being gay is a choice” comes up a lot. Normally, I am able to ignore it and move on but for some reason it hit me harder today.

So, I want to take the time out to ensure everyone that I did not choose to be gay.  Yes, I may have chosen to live a life that is true to me, and be open and out about my sexuality.  But, believe me when I say that I did not have any choice in the matter of my sexual orientation.

I tried very hard to be straight, for many years.  Probably because I grew up always hearing that gay is a choice.  So, I struggled and was confused and felt like something was wrong with me until I stopped being something that I’m not.  

We, as a nation and a generation, need to understand that there are gay little kids out there that are scared and confused, some who take their own lives because they don’t know any other escape.  We need to stop filling the airwaves with this kind of nonsense and hatred so that these impressionable kids (and even adults) know they aren’t alone, and that nothing is wrong with them.  

I acknowledge that there are people that don’t understand this, or that don’t agree with it.  And that is ok; they are entitled to their beliefs and their opinions.  But, what they think and believe is not a higher entity then someone else.  We have an obligation as HUMANS to take care of each other, and we should do this regardless of gender, race, status, and sexual orientation.  

Above everything, love is love, and on the inside we are all the same.
