Field Trip #2 - WEEK 12
MOMA - Surrounds Installations
SURROUNDS? : “IMMERSIVE?”
#1 Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller.
The Killing Machine. 2007.
🖤. Multiple media : Installation, immersive, interactive, sounds...
I was attracted as soon as entered this room. The first impression for me is that this is a kinetic installation. But, when I spend more time on this space, the most interesting part is the subtle attraction, and the “loop.” I stayed here for about 20 minutes to observe different viewers. This work is repeated every two minutes, and the button to restart the "show" is required for the viewer to press. What's interesting is that almost every viewer will repeat the round after pressing the switch, just like I watched it five times. The hidden interaction of this piece is straightforward, that is, pressing the button. But combined with the atmosphere of surrounding, it gives people a subtle feeling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
About the theme, it is obvious that the operating bed is empty, the robot arms are doctors? What about the patient? After research, I found that this work “partly inspired by Franz Kafka's 'In the Penal Colony' and partly by the American system of capital punishment as well as the current political situation, the piece is an ironic approach to killing and torture machines.” The two artists combine materials that look contradictory, such as soft pink fur fabric; icy robotic arm; modified bass, disco lighting ball, etc. These all create irony and accusation of the facts of disharmony, inequality, and ridiculousness in the real world. Thinking of this, I suddenly felt that the button that we pressed was cruel, direct complaints, we are also the audience in the world of murder, or are we the murderers?

Liquidity Inc. 2004.
💙. Multiple media: Installations, lights, experimental videos, indirect interactive...
The artist's clever use of lights makes this work look immersive, nice and attractive. Personally, I respect her use of space, and experimental images are also interesting. But, maybe because I didn't have the chance to sit on this semi-arc installation and lie down to look upon the video. I am confused about the experience of this wave-like ramp structure. The artist's idea is the feeling of liquid, yet for me this kind of interaction is boring, and the straightforward experience is very common. Maybe it’s better that saying thebroken, unique half arc is perhaps a biological eggshell? Or something else...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I didn't feel the idea of liquidity at all, I noticed that this seemingly illogical editing of experimental video may be is a kind of free flowing concept, which consistent with the artist's expression of social topics.

Transformation
Evolution
Quoting #1: “Death does not authenticate existence. It is an out-moded evolutionary strategy. The body need no longer be repaired, but could simply have parts replaced. Extending life no longer means "existing" but rather "being operational". Bodies need not age or deteriorate; they would not run down nor even fatigue; they would stall then start - possessing both the potential for renewal and reactivation.”
Quoting #2: “ELECTRONIC SPACE BECOMES A MEDIUM OF ACTION RATHER THAN INFORMATION. It meshes the body with its machines in ever-increasing complexity and interactiveness.”
Quoting #3: “Technologies are becoming better life-support systems for our images than for our bodies. IMAGES ARE IMMORTAL, BODIES ARE EPHEMERAL.”
Tumblr media
I love this part of “body” and human life, and evolution, which is exactly what I want to focus on my creations. This article discussing from human’s body, to the shortness of life, to the technological age of development to this day, arguing the essential influence of eternal technology on human beings.
Recently, I read a news report. A scientist with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(=ALS)who transformed his body and experimented as the first alive bionic person in the world. His website is still updating his science and life process. http://www.scott-morgan.com/blog/
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, the next step in evolution must be infinite hybridization and integration.
The article mentions that the immortality of images and the principle of quasi-images are similar. The authenticity of virtual reality manipulation has been a common topic in recent years. I don't like to discuss this.
I am interested in the fact that the article roughly mentioned, the physical body, and the virtual memory, which will all be transformable. Every time I saw this topic, it really excites me. I can imagine that how messy but wonderful the future will be like. Baudrillard said that there is no north in the absolute North Pole. When the combination of technology, biology, nature, humanity to the extreme level. The concept of life will change, there maybe will be no death, and the definition of born or eternal life will be different in future.

System - Organization - Cooperation
1. Leonardo
Journal: collaboration between artists scientists technologists.
Mutual complementation
The cross-media cooperation of art is not limited to the art field. Under the development of comprehensive social resources, art combines science and technology, science, biology, and physics. These combinations not only bring infinite possibilities to art, but also create new possibilities for social innovation. For example, some functional works of art, combined with biological sciences, convey the purpose of protecting the environment through art exhibitions. The greatness of this magazine is to encourage this cooperation. Magazines and websites as information media can effectively stimulate the cooperation of artists and scientists.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I found the website of this journal, honestly, the interface is not interesting enough, but it is really a great resource to find inspiration.
2. WGBH, FRED BARZYK/ NEW TELEVISION WORKSHOP
Tv program: experimental video art 1968-1993
Wide spread
It is great that artists can access to television technology through their experimental "workshops." These workshops allowed artists to work with expensive equipment and skilled technicians to develop personal approaches to the television medium. It contained multiple video works, like dance, performance, experimental videos, etc. I think the success of this project depended in through Tv program as public media to wide spread, it could inspire audiences to interest in art, and early time this organization must had gave huge benefits for artists.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This phased organization is over. I think, in today's society, the development of new media art, and the integration of multiple media, I assume that it will be great such programs, institutions may be resurrected. The widespread dissemination for the artist is not just a fame accumulation, this model brings a fresh definition of new media art and popular culture.
3. The Kitchen
Non-profit art institution: performance & video art
Working in group
https://thekitchen.org/about
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Being an artist is undoubtedly very difficult. The same difficulty is facing alone. The emergence of these institutions and organizations has given countless talented artists the opportunity to show themselves. I found this institution in New York and if I had any chance opportunity be one of them it must be wonderful. And the best part is multiple cooperation. Unlimited possibilities will born in communication, and will also lead to many friendships.
The reality of social world is that we cannot escape. It can trigger artistic inspiration and technological innovation in the organization. At the same time, these magazines, TV shows, and non-profit organizations bring unlimited opportunities to artists: cooperation, exhibitions, and collections. Art market is a system, and these combinations are important in this huge system.

# The “loss” of “reality”
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Thinking from the opposite mimesis: What is absolute - true art creation?
The answer maybe is imagination, and through media to show something totally new. However, it may never avoid to use the resources come from nature or elements of life? Beautiful traditional portraits, impressionist landscapes, surrealism, even Bosch or Picasso's paintings, the separation of the body and the exaggerated and creative paintings are all products of the human body, the combination of natural animals and plants. So, is that abstract expressionism art works are purely and no mime creation? But, Rothko also borrowed from Matisse, the concept of space. The master Jackson Pollock may have been inspired by splash paint. In addition, aside from art and sculpture, photography art has beared serious criticism since its inception. Some art critics at the time said that cameras only "records" the original beauty or ugly, and certain narrative content of life story.
I think that the essential appreciation of art mimesis is to appreciate the real world and our own life.

Dependency issues.
How does the virtual world, science, and technology fit into people's lives? It just like people who wearing glasses, glasses are part of my body. It is no exaggeration to say that mobile phones, navigation systems, and chat media, these virtual things have evolved into a part of people in a certain dimension. Baudrillard pointed out this fact to remind people not to be lost in the virtual, so that the value of the physical world is reduced.
In fact, I assume that in the footsteps of human development, the real and complete integration of virtual reality in people's lives may be an inevitable trend. The fusion of reality and virtual, the hybrid of inorganic and organic, cyberpunk may be the next link in evolution.

Miranda Javid - “ I don’t want to born to dies.”
Smoke’s Last Thought.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the narrative process of the animation, the flame from a candle briefly describes the joy of life, then, more content tells the sadness and long process of death represented by smoke.
Story: The emotional changes of the characters are clearly expressed. The newborn flame is smiling. When it was extinguished, the smoke is sad and painful. The emotions of the old woman did not fluctuate greatly, but it was just the most common lonely life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hidden highlight content of the animation is when different smokes meet in the sky. Whether it is a flame or a smoke, or the old woman is not a specific individual, they symbolize the life of everyone. I like her most hidden in the story about the relationship between people as individuals and other people. Loneliness - companionship - loneliness. Before the end of life, it is a lonely struggle, but then there will be a short encounter with different souls, and then lonely waiting for the real end. The clues here are not limited to the world of death, this pattern is probably also the world in which people living now.
In the lecture, she mentioned her thought process and various role inspirations. The role of the old lady is her grandmother's mother. The scene is that she walks countless times every day in Los Angeles. She extends her micro-world to the evolution of life and death in the macro world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vision: From the bathroom as the micro-space, to the outdoors, to the sky, to the universe, the scene conversion combined with the plot is very touching. In the last part of the video, there is a strong vision of the three-dimensional world, a channel in throat, it broke the constant black and white color, which is a great surprise for audiences.
As if the sun is rising just for fall, people born for death. There are two protagonists in the film's love, an old woman, and a smoke. They alternated in parallel, and the artist used an analogy to compare the smoke to the old lady. When the disappearance of a smoke means ending, the death that the old lady will face in her life is also completely “game over.”
# Topic development
I think the artist wants to express the Schopenhauer’s theory: The essence of humanity is tragedy.
However, she said “ I don’t want to born to dies.” And there are many plots describe the smoke struggles in the room to don’t want to die. I believe the intention behind this story is that death and destruction of an individual is actually an affirmation of the strong will of life.

HSIN-CHEN HUANG
Traceability - find my history
He mentioned his background of game design learning. And his current works are focuses on VR art. His works can be divided into two categories according to the value system: commercial art and personal political art project . I really like the idea of his personal art works. Most of them are related to his own story, and almost all of them are political art. According to his personal experience, he lived in the special relationship between Taiwan and China. Although his work has a political background, he can feel the feelings in his works.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was introduced to each of the works from the birth of the idea to the implementation of the practice, to the final presentation. This process makes me feel that a good political artwork can start from my own story and in the whole social event. He is always pay attentions on the traces of "people." Most of his works are cross-media, and one of his works covers many sculpture video installations. Linking history and present, while pursuing history, shaping new memories. Large digital media art in historical sites, combined with performing arts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although it seems that the projector is set up in a room, it should be very touched when the Taiwanese who have historical and cultural emotions are sitting and watching. I really like the work Moment of Meeting. 2013. According to his own disease eyes, he extends idea to the face of a person is a vivid story, which can be used as a clue of creation. Also about vision. He team has very professional ability to 3D modeling and capacity to master space. However, he explained that everything is based on traditional culture, such as dance, patterns, ect. Yet, when I looking at his video works, I feel that the surreal naked human limbs, and the blunt structural which just to seek for visual effects are not related to his story. It is far away from the narrative in his speech. Several of his spatial video creations are too straightforward, basically a accumulation of technology, and all traditional highlights are abandoned. But his idea of interaction is very interesting. For example, sitting on a swing with VR glasses, experience four-dimensional interaction.
In addition to artistic creation, he is very talented in language ability. I’m very impressed by some sentences he mentioned.
The house is like alive, we sit in her arms and watch her memories.
Traveling freely in the brains of others.
With my hands, heal the sorrow of history.
The broken light on the stage is like a puzzle, scattered all over the place.

Osmose: slowly, gradually , a process.
Key words: breath, space, memory.
1. Inhale and exhale. The most interesting thing about this project is this breathing induction. Breathing seems to be related to emotions. When people first enter the virtual space, the experiencer should be nervous, after gradually walking around, watching for a period of time they will enter a state of relaxation, slow down, and the space for self-breathing is also presented. Of course, here the mood may not be just relaxation, the surprises caused by the scene, the uneasiness and other changes in the breathing cause the viewer's emotions to trigger new scenes, and the new scenes affect their own emotions, this is a mutual effect.
2. VR art: a sense of loneliness. This is also very appealing, once viewers wearing their own equipment, they’re immersed into the world that they only present for themselves. The experience is confused here by the space that their eyes see, but if the equipment is removed, it just leaving the virtual world and leave a unique memory of viewer .
3. Visual language and sounds. By not watching VR glasses, my feelings must be very different with original intentions.
The first time I watched the video through the screen, the overall effect on me was very dark, translucent vision, mysterious music also gave people a tragic color, a kind of eardrum resonance, feeling in the underwater world, to tell the truth even gave I feel suffocated, in fact, visions and sounds have a greater impact on my breathing.
The second time, I tried to turn my room light off and created more darker environment, and I observed my breathing. I found that after entering the cell world in the video, after a deep breath, and exhalation, I am relaxed. This is a very interesting experience, and I was very inspired by the first time I observed my breathing during viewing and experience.

Keyword: Bionic
(The second work: Sinking feeling, here is the link: https://youtu.be/GitKKzsG-2M )
At first I saw his work. I think the artist is ambitious in carrying out his eternal life plan. He used his face as a symbol and used technology to create countless new life. It is like an infinite clone. After millions of years, he still achieved infinite life.
After careful understanding, I found that the most interesting details in his work are: conversation and listening.
His copied faces play different roles. They are not just playing the artist. They represent the audience and represent all living things, human characteristics such as fear. But when the audience and the "they" have a dialogue, everything is generated in real time by computer programs, and even some sentences are exceptionally smooth, as if those moving their heads really have life. I still think he has a lot of ambitions, he using his face to symbolize the general behavior of all human beings. [ In addition, in the work of three skulls, he mentioned, "the mind of animals, plants, minerals." I am a little confused. I considered the commonality between the three types of element and “humans”, maybe they are all organic life? (This part is a little bit complicated, I will continue to think) ]

Keyword: Mechatronics performance & Mechanical aesthetic
I will discuss the works of these two artists together. Their works have obvious commonalities: expressing the contradictory emotions of mechanics and technology through performances.
Why is it contradictory? Their emotional details can be divided into: the pursuit of mechanical beauty and the "hate" of mechanical control.
First, from the artist's creative intentions. The two artists allowed the audience to manipulate the machinery and control their body, thus stimulating the visual expression of the pain in the body: the massive control of modern science and technology. Second, from the point of visual effect. The two artists personally performed on stage. Their bodies are not beautiful and have no muscles. They combine their full of weakness body and twisted face with metal and wires. This is a straightforward expression of mechanical aesthetics. The combination of machinery and human body, visual impact, prediction and pursuit of cyberpunk world.
# Development of the topic #
1. Since the era of mechanization, people have left traditional materials, wood, stone, etc. Metal, and electronic technology permeated into human life. And it brings convenience for people's daily life while controlling people in subtle ways . People are too dependent on mechanization, which makes many people worry about whether the value of human beings will be weakened at the end of the development of things. Where is the human right to autonomy in the state of mechanical mastery? This is indeed an objective fact worth discussing, but whether this situation can change, what the mechanical dominance will look like, we have not been able to know for centuries, unless we can live longer.
2. Why do people always want to transform their bodies? From the most basic behavior: dressing, hair dyeing, jewelry, tattoos, these can be said to be changes to human body, but very few people can really transform their own body with blood but I believe that everyone has this potential desire, becoming more beautiful base on their standards.
Why people are unusually infatuated with mechanical creatures? The reason for people relying on mechanical equipment is the same: strength, speed, appearance, and so on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Movie: Alita
In addition to the works of these two male artists, I also thought of a Japanese manga: Alita, which has a great influence on me. This cartoon was born very early, but it has been made into a movie in recent years. After the film was aired, there was a popular saying on the Internet: Every girl wants to be Alita. Why? Because of the extremely beautiful metal made body, the power that can erupte at any time, and an immortal life.
All in all, both the works of the two artists and the films I mentioned show a very special kind of psychology of human beings. On the complex emotions of science and technology, on the one hand, a lot of voices, humanities, artists, protest against science and technology, but sometimes The pursuit of human mechanical beauty has reached morbid psychology, which is a special product of the times. Plus, personally I don't like to discuss technology to control life is not right, the most terrible third hand is not technology but the social class itself. In general, I love the beauty of machinery. The truth is that I am looking forward to the advent of the era of mechanical dominance. My personal prediction is that at that time, the relationship between humans and technology will be very special, and human autonomy will not disappear, as long as they want.

Physical body
This man with a beautiful face and body but who has really done a lot of crazy behaviors, when he was young. I am really confused, why is he hurting himself most of the time? If we disassemble his work, the process: behavior - injury;the result: scars. So what is his beginning, and the central idea? He always refers to the word “liberation of mind”. He tangibly conveys this idea with crazy behavior and vision that I think is extremist. However, in his works, the human body and the spark meet are beautiful, and with painful and irritating visual expression has become an art genre, just like Frida Kahol's paintings divide her own body into two parts with a machine gun, I think that It is very beautiful.
After this reading, I start to think about when people began to use crazy method, showing and changing their bodies? I found out my art history book. At the beginning, human body sculpture in the ancient era, started to show the beauty of the human body. After a period of social reasons, the theme of the Renaissance was humanity. I think that in contemporary art, the performance artist is the most straightforward continuation of the human body and the humanity concept.
In addition, I admire people who dare to transform and challenge their bodies. Everything about the human body is extremely beautiful and mysterious. Not only artists, I remember a transgender woman who changed herself into a dragon. I respect her words: "I don't want to die with the appearance of human beings". Also, like many surrealist painters, I prefer to add wings or fangs on my body in my self-portrait. If I can live for a thousand years, and live in the mechanical dominance era, I want to see if I can have the spider's metal eight limbs.

Personally, I don't really like his work. Surrealistic image, more of a technical presentation, a popular commercial vision, I think the art value is not enough. But when I carefully look at his work, he likes to reorganize many virtual worlds and the real world. Watching these and straightforward photos can actually see the story he wants to express, the utopian vision.
He mentioned that he likes to travel and natural sceneries, and then recreates these scenery. The interesting thing about this idea is that he personally went to those in nature, and took photos, but then he show us the landscapes actually did not exist in the world, and through digital media, people watched through the pictures. Here, he may have played the role of God.
The emotions presented in this set of black and white photos are very interesting. Mountain, endure, moon, tiger. It is like landscapes of a surreal movie. The reason why this work is more attractive to me is this like a performance art. The acting of the character makes the sturdy composite picture have more layers and emotions.

Her personal working experiences in all over the world give her creations a thematic thread: the cultural fusion. In her several works, we can see the combination of traditional China elements, India music, Western factors, and certain religion information, etc. Like the work “Illuminations” she created in 2013, could as a great symbol. Arising from the multicultural culture and global transnational character in Singapore. The starting point of this work is the diversity of Singapore. When she thought about the way of the voice and space, she merges Indian music and Chinese Taoist thought like the meaning of TaiJi. At many levels, this work has been merged many times. At the same time, it expressed the relationship between national regions the timeline of history and the forms of dynamic media.
On the other side, the visual similarity of her artworks is the repetition in complex patterns. She is good at using a variety of colors to create, most of her works are presented in abstract color shapes, two-dimensional or three-dimensional color graphics. This way of creating has a very strong visual impact. Yet, in several of her works, such patterns dazzle the eyes, and the distracting vision will make people don’t want to stay in the long-term. Such as her video work “Prakempa”, in 2018, the dazzling pattern just replayed again and again like the vision in a kaleidoscope, which is less value for people look forward to. But this video even though it keeps playing in more than seven-minute, no various scene changes, no surprises so that the audience can only see the tedious technical repetition. And viewers can not insist on watching the whole process, because too aplenty in color with fast graphics switching will cause trouble to the eyes. The background of her work and creative ideas are very connotative, including many levels, and touching context, but in terms of visual presentation, such kind of creation indeed minus points for her creation.
Meanwhile, the medium of her works are very varied, and she has done very well in cross-border creation and using space. Including a variety of clever ways to display video works, and interactive device 3D printing, and so on. The increase marks are her exhibitions, use “Illuminations” as an instance again, the visual effect of this work also with complex colorful pattern, but, she used huge scale LED screen, and divided videos into 12 pieces linked to each other and became a giant float screen. It is like a digital mural or rainbow river, which maintains many colorful stories. Plus, the walking behavior of viewers is an interactive response. She also added more vivid elements in this work like used sensors embedded in objects from South Asia (Tibetan Singing Bowls, Indian Ottomans, folding screen), and local plants, the audience is implicitly asked to reconsider relationships between organic systems, material, and digital cultures, and discover new connections between them.
All in all, she is an experienced cross-border artist. In the era of new media art development, she has truly achieved the integration of various art forms. The most wonderful thing is that her exhibition works will take into account the audience's feelings also in rich layers so that the work and audience are integrated. The connotation of her works is deep, even though the visual part is too complex and repetitive, which can be compensated by the way of exhibition, so her works are a kind of changeable balance.

On his website the keywords of himself are abandoned technology, hypothetical creature. He used to abandoned Tv 📺 as main material, and I can feel his intentions of video sculptures. It is interesting that he as one of technicians, has been helping to restore Nam June Paik’s video artworks in New York City from 2015 until now. I can see the strong connection between his work and Nam June Paik’s.
His idea is very special about when the abandoned machinery, and the program has its own consciousness, new life creatures have emerged. Hahahaha, it just reminds me of the Avengers: Age of Ultron. The greatest man-made creature. This really makes people think, maybe in the near future, it is no longer in works of art and movies. They will be alive after centuries.

Plus, I feel maybe “eyes” is also his keyword. John Berger mentioned the film about the appearance of camera. After industrialization, the emergence of cameras, new eyes appeared, mechanical reproduction is the first time in the history of the world to liberate art works from its parasitic dependence on rituals. His work also makes me feel that the machine has eye contact with us.

It is amazing that audiences involve in all his creations. I like several of his works, he hiden the Kinect, which arous audiences’ strong curiosity. When viewers stand in front of those works with expectations, suddenly, they will found themselves inside the art work, It must be a funny and wonderful experience.
But honestly, after I learned knowledge about coding, I noticed that his work maybe just contain simple ups and downs, or left and right movement, or digital image display. It indeed contain straight forward interactions with people, yet, still less thinking for me.

However, this work surprise me. When he used penguins as “actors”, there was a connection between human beings and natural creatures. People in front them just like a shepherd, or with the hand of God, or the person who plays chess. And several questions come to me. So, who is controlling everything? What penguins 🐧 represent for? What if the characters are not penguins? How this work can be more “interesting”?
Keep thinking.
