So I have this Headcanon that Nikola bought the leather coat for Helen!
And I love it because it makes so much sense in my head! James sends Future Helen off to change her outfit to something more fitting for the time, and of all the choices she picks this one.
And the only reason and can think of why is because it's the outfit Past Helen is least likely to miss! I'm thinking the only reason Past Helen won't miss it is because it's something she chose to rarely wear, if at all.
John's anger was out of control, and Past Helen didn't want to incur more of his anger by wearing a gift that Nikola gave her, so when she was presented with it, she accepted it, probably she secretly loved it, and couldn't part with it, but also she knew she couldn't wear it. so she shoved it the back of her wardrobe out of sight.
