Juno Steel is so fun
He’s an asshole. He’s a Lady. He’s 99% trauma. He’s a tough guy. He’s whiny. He has the charisma of a drowned cat. He’s everyone’s crush. He’s terrible to his friends. He would kill for his friends. He hates literally everyone. He was ready to die for civilization. He’s objectively a terrible person. He’s not irredeemable.

sinners would fuck so hard as a stage play.
one central location with an indoor space that can be converted as needed to the church, the train station, the chow's store, annie's house, bert and joan's shack. and the outdoor lot doubling for a cotton field.
a cast of major players and a nameless ensemble who double as townspeople/partiers/ancestors and descendants/vampires/redshirts.
all the alternative readings of the characters' motivations? well! different actors and different audiences will enact all of them at some point!
when those spirits pop up in the crowd during i lied to you? when your eyes wander over the stage and see smoke beating up the gambler and mary seducing stack as pearline tears up the stage during pale, pale moon? when the audience starts clapping along to rocky road to dublin? dude come on.
being able to see what's going on inside and outside simultaneously? watching the party guests slowly get picked off in the background as everyone inside the juke doesn't realize what's happening to them?
clear act breaks: remmick dropping into the story closes act i. stack turning into a vampire and running outside closes act ii. grace inviting the vampires closes act iii. smoke killing the klan closes act iv. sammie and his dad in the church as the act v closer.
even the epic tragedy feel of the movie gets enhanced. the story's about cycles of violence that repeat themselves on personal and societal levels, how we keep trying to build community and we keep blowing it, and the story crosses the point of no return the moment remmick decides to force his way in. making it a stage play that repeats the same plot night after night adds another layer.
especially to the opening where the twins buy the sawmill from hogwood when they inspect the floor and he won't tell them why it's been washed-- the implication being that he's scammed other black people into buying the mill before killing them and he's doing it again--takes on a new life when the whole story literally played out one night ago. that wasn't just anyone, that was you. you're in a time loop, repeating the last day of your life for as long as the show goes on.

Been thinking a lot about the constant dehumanisation that’s like inherent to every description of Hyde and how that’s what we’re TAUGHT to say about him, when in reality the crux of what Hyde is is WHOLLY HUMAN. He’s not some mindless animal or a demon taking over, he’s every HUMAN aspect that Jekyll wants or has to hide.
Also the inherent ableism of that. “The reason this guy looks weird is because he’s evil/he’s evil because he looks weird” is a CRAZY message.
Hyde is entirely human and characters within the book can’t handle that so they dehumanise him consistently until he’s dead and they finally realise that oh, this was a HUMAN BEING.

The problem is that America has beaten down its people for decades and gotten them weak and desperate and now promises a way out, a way to transcend and rise above, through selling out their fellow man. They encourage contempt and hatred as one way ticket to not being included with the masses being death marched to poverty or imprisonment or whatever other bitter end surely awaits the people they’re told are beneath them. An embarrassingly large chunk of white men are just straight up nazis these days as a way to dissociate from the rest of the carnage around them, even if they’re broke and uneducated and from an impoverished background themselves. They’ll vote for and align themselves with anything for a taste of power and control that makes them feel a little less helpless. The same goes for minorities. They’ll punch down if they think it’ll get them somewhere, even if in reality they’re punching sideways. I don’t know what else to say, really. Everybody is so incredibly hateful. We are a loveless, disrespectful nation. We are so spread thin by our government that we would sell each other out in a heartbeat for an ounce of relief. This is what we’ve come to.
It’s not even about Trump at this point. He’s gonna get in office and do whatever he does and it’s gonna be a mess but whatever. This is indicative of deeper problem. This is just the ugly consequence of the already present reality in this country that we all just despise each other. There is no solidarity and there is no love. Trump being in office or not doesn’t change the fact that America is a breeding ground for violent hatred. Trump has given people a shining example of how to give in to the worst parts of your human nature and make it the problem of everyone around them. I don’t even know what we’re supposed to do about that. I don’t know if that’s something we can come back from. And if anything COULD be done about it, Trump certainly wouldn’t do it. Honestly, Kamala probably wouldn’t have either. We are so deeply fucked.
However, I must say, if you voted for Trump, I hope that peace never finds you. Instead, I hope clarity strikes you someday like a clap of lightning and you have to live the rest of your life with the knowledge and guilt of what you’ve done and who you are as a person.
Love yall. Shit is so bleak but the world keeps spinning until it doesn’t, I guess. We can’t count on the government for literally even a shred of progress or hope so just keep up the good fight in your own personal lives. That’s literally the only thing to be done at this point. Stay safe out there. Maybe buy a gun.

If there's one thing I've seen over and over again in the Dracula Daily + Re: Dracula fandom, it's the desire for an animated adaptation. Not of media-inspired-by, but of Dracula itself. And so, I've made:
youtube
...something that is decidedly not animated.
Yet.
I'm hoping to get Dracula Reanimated (tentative name) in exactly 1 year from now, by the end of DracDaily's 2025 run, perhaps even the beginning of it if I'm really good. But in all honesty, it could take till 2026 given the teeny complication that 1) I've no animation skills whatsoever 2) fulltime job.
So, I hope you'll stay around for the next 2 years at least to see this completed.
In the meanwhile, if you'd like to support a project by actual professionals, try @theholmwoodfoundation . It's a found footage horror fiction podcast by @georgiacooked and @fiotrethewey set in a time long after the events of Dracula, and yet the characters find themselves haunted (literally) by vestiges of the past.
Goodnight, stay safe, and rest well.
