𝑾𝑬𝑳𝑪𝑶𝑴𝑬 𝑻𝑶 𝑨𝑩𝑬𝑹𝑫𝑬𝑬𝑵, ELI GRAY ( HE / HIM ). They’ve been told they look a lot like PENN BADGELY. This bright citizen of Aberdeen is THIRTY — FOUR years old and works as a HISTORY PROFESSOR. They have been living in “The Deen” for SIX years after moving away for college then moving back. When I think of ELI, they remind me of LONG DRIVES PLAYING CASSETTE TAPES, JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF CLUTTER, and LATE NIGHTS WITH A BOOK BY A MUG — RINGED COFFEE TABLE. Around town, they are known as RELIABLE, PASSIONATE, and GOOD NATURED. They also have the reputation of being A PERFECTIONIST, ( SILENTLY ) RESENTFUL, and BRAZEN.

Eli may have been born and bred in Aberdeen, but his heart was made to wander. It started in books about fantasy and adventure, escaping into the otherworldly, before slowly turning towards the wonders of the real world. What else existed outside this small lake town? His sister, Evelyn, younger by three years, thought so too. They made plans, like all kids do, to leave home and find themselves. Eli was well on his way, too. That interest in the rest of the world led to an interest in what came before and he was accepted into UC Berkeley to pursue a history degree. Evie was determined to follow him out to California and become an actress. And maybe their plans would have worked out just as they wanted… if their mom hadn’t died right before Eli’s graduation. At 18 and 15, the Gray siblings were changed quite drastically. Eli still wanted to head off to college and Evie would be left behind. She grew rebellious with only their grieving father to control her, and barely said goodbye when she left for the University of Southern California. Her brother didn’t even know she got accepted, not for lack of trying. Their family was broken and Eli felt like he barely managed to keep any of them together. Maybe he was even the reason it fell apart. The guilt became so much that when he received a call some years after leaving home, after graduating and securing an excellent job teaching the subject he loved, he was on the first flight back. His dad fell and broke his hip near the lake and he had no idea how he’d gotten outside. So here Eli is: back in the place he swore to escape, caring for his dementia-touched father, teaching at the nearest community college. And it’s been this way for the past six years. He tries to get Evie to come home and help, hell, even visit, but she’s flightier than ever and barely makes it to Christmas. The weight of the Gray family and all he gave up to take it on is something he feels every day. But he’s doing his best and that’s all anyone can ask for. As long as Eli remembers that, anyway.
