Something you should always remember about every single person you see on this site is that they are a tumblr user. They are the kind of person who uses tumblr

This is in my city and now there's a food truck park near it named in its honor.
was reminded of that youtube channel that records footage of that bridge that scalps trucks today. one of the fascinating developments that's happened since i last heard about it is that, in one of their many attempts to stop the trucks from being can-opened, they installed a traffic light that detects when a vehicle that's over the allowed height is coming and turns red so the driver can stop and hopefully notice the signage all around that's screaming "YOUR VEHICLE IS OVERHEIGHT TURN AROUND" and avoid an accident. However as a result sometimes drivers see the light turning yellow and IMMEDIATELY start flooring it to avoid having to stop, ensuring that the roof of their truck just gets fucking annihilated instantly. Really beautiful stuff you should check it out

I'm gonna need somebody to create a gorgeous art book of everyone's Chapell Roan at the VMAs fanart so I can buy it and look at it whenever I want without having to look at a blue screen.

Research Project
Hi everybody! I’m a librarian working on a research project aimed at understanding fanfiction and the wider fanfiction community so that it can be better included, represented, and supported within the library sphere. I’m currently running a pilot study to validate my research tools as part of a Higher Degree through Research course (Graduate Certificate in Arts and Social Science Research) via the School of Information and Communication Studies at Charles Sturt University, Australia. If you’re over 18, a part of the fanfiction community, and interested in participating in my research project, please go and do a survey here.
All data collected through the survey is anonymous and will not be gifted or sold to anyone. If you choose to participate in the interview process, your personal information will be anonymised, protected, and destroyed according to CSU policy. If you’re interested in supporting my research project, you can provide feedback about it after completing the initial survey. If you want to see how this research project turns out, please follow my research Tumblr. Thanks!!

Hi all, seems like the neverending discourse about bookbinding and profiting off fanfiction has reared its head again. You can find my updated transformative works policy here, but specifically:
If you’re binding for personal use, go for it. Bookbinding for others is also fine as long as no profit is being made. Profit includes typesets behind paywalls or Patreon tiers, please do not keep any content of mine behind a paywall. Please do not have my fics printed by for-profit sites like lulu or b&n.
I would also encourage people to learn more about the history of fan binding and how it began as a subversion of traditional book models, not as a way to make money or clout.
Two papers to read: Binding fan fiction and reexamining book production models
Fan binding as a method of fan work preservation
Binding is a wonderful way to support the gift economy within fandom communities. Fanfic itself is "outlaw publishing" and the physical copies are a way to preserve these stories in case of online purges of content and/or censorship (another great point found in the research about queer media and how a majority of fandom creators identify as part of the lgbtq community and therefore have more to lose from censorship). One last great resource is @renegadepublishing so give them a follow if you're interested in learning more about binding.
Keep fanfiction free.

If you haven’t listened to the latest episode yet, we introduced our very first Fansplaining Fellow, Pepper Campbell, and the research project she’ll be doing over the next few months, an ethnography about fans on Discord!
If you’re an active Discord user (for fandom stuff specifically), please consider signing up—you can remain anonymous, and Pepper will only need 30-60 minutes of your time to talk through a few broad question areas.
Please share this sign-up form with anyone you think might be interested!

Bookmarked this because I'm not doing Discord research right now but I might eventually.
Hey there! I saw the post about the undergraduate Discord researcher and wanted to let them (and you and everyone) know there is a Discord server for academics studying Discord- the Discord Academic Research Community aka D/ARC.
More info on their website:
https://darcmode.org/
Thank you so much! An FYI to any of our academic/academic-adjacent followers working on Discord as well. ☺️

how would you reccomend getting into bookbinding? I've been thinking about trying to for a while now, but been feeling a little lost when it comes to figuring how to start haha
Hi anon! <3 Totally understandable, I know the feeling. My biggest recommendation would be to join the @renegadepublishing Discord server because they are all very lovely and very helpful and also you get to see lots of other cool ficbinds :) I do not hang out there often enough but the Discord has lots of experienced binders happy to answer questions.
I found this tutorial by @armoredsuperheavy to be especially useful when I was starting out! Granted, it is a pretty long document but it tells you everything you need to know about how to make a half-bound hardback :) Specifically catered towards ficbinds but the assembly process is the same if you just want to make yourself some cool notebooks!
Sea Lemon over on YouTube does a lot of really excellent tutorials - I think it was this one that I used when I was first getting started, which is a tutorial on a modified version of kettle stitch and the same kind of binding I use for most of my books. But there's a lot of other different ones on there too! Just generally a lot of good advice on how to make pretty books.
Personally speaking I'm a fairly low budget bookbinder; I operate at like, the bare minimum of stuff so thought I would take a picture of most of the tools I use in case that's something you would find useful.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A bird's eye view of basic bookbinding tools, each of which are labelled with the name of the tool. Some have additional comments. Clockwise they read:
Cutting mat
Metal ruler, glue brush and pencil
Sewing needle! I use a curved needle because it makes things slightly easier :)
Bonefolder for sharp paper creases
Bookbinding awl (for stabbing holes in sigs)
Good pair of scissors and some binding thread (I use embroidery floss!)
Craft knife for cutting paper/card etc.
End ID.]
I know that probably seems like a lot haha, but these are the basics for sewing up your text block (the pages inside the book) and making the case. I would recommend getting a bigger cutting mat than mine though - it's very frustrating when you're trying to cut up massive rolls of paper and your work area is the size of a postage stamp :')
Outside of collecting tools and materials... my own recommendation is to start small, maybe with a 30-40k fic, because that's a good enough size for an A5 book without being so big that you'll get overwhelmed. An 20-30k fic will make a good A6 book too :)
Hope this at least a little helpful! Mostly I recommend reading through that tutorial, doing it to the letter once, and then figuring out your own process :) Best of luck to you! <3
