Have you heard of the Disposable Black Girlfriend trope ? There's a Medium article about it. Its when a black girl is a love interest usually to a white character but she's not the endgame love interest & the white character ends up with another white character at the end. Its called the Disposable Black girlfriend but it does happen to black men.
Familiar with the trend, but I hadn't realized it'd been named. But that's helpful so thanks for sharing. It can definitely apply to Black and brown men too.
The thing that bugs me is that shows will cast Black or brown people (usually in guest spots) to be like "look we know that BIPOC exist, we're being inclusive," but it ends up being really problematic. I was a toddler when Friends was airing but I'm gonna guess Julie, the girlfriend Ross brought back from China in season two, was not a well-received character in 1995. When shows bring on poc to be a layover love interest they're putting the characters and the actors in a really unfair position to be hated by fans because they're interfering with desired pairings. And it reduces them to plot devices to help the end-game pairing realize their true feelings. It's fine for relationships not to work out, most people fall in love more than once but in the end the disposable Black boyfriend or girlfriend trope sends the message that Black and brown people are fine for a fling, hot enough for sex, but not worthy of real love.
With regard to Black women whether or not most writers get it for decades Black women have been stuck being portrayed as hyper-sexualized Jezebels or Mammy figures so consumed with taking care of white folks that they've forgotten what sex is. Stories where Black women are loved are huge and still rare. We're not really getting that by being just a speed-bump in someone else's love story.
Again, The Office did it, Sex and the City did it, Friends did it, You did it twice, Once Upon a Time did it twice. Zoom in on OUAT, the writers said we're gonna make Marian who is Robin Hood's cannonical true love and has been for decades a woman of color. But we will not explore who she is as a person or her feelings, she'll just be an obstacle to Regina's happy ending and her death was reduced to a joke. Classy.
Maybe there's hope because unlike other shows Simon's not a guest character. Maybe they'll go the Brooke Davis route. Brooke wasn't Lucas's true love but that didn't make her a bad character or unlovable. She wasn't Lucas's first choice, but later she'd be Julian's. Maybe Simon's Julian Baker is out there. I appreciate that they didn't demonize him in the break-up, but as it stands not a great look. The show had Max say he and Zoey’s connection was purely physical in season one and then the writers used him to have Max and Zoey get back together. Not great.

Betty Jean Baucom 1970-1994
Brandi June Henderson 1975-1994
The murder of the eighth victim(Betty Jean Baucom) was one of the saddest. The saddest one of all involves the ninth victim, Brandi June Henderson and her infant son Tyrece Woods. Both lived in the Lake Apartments in East Charlotte. Betty Jean Baucom forgave him after all he had done to his victims. Up to that point, she didn't thought he was a murderer. Instead, she thought he was a gentleman who wouldn't harmed anyone, not even a fly. Instead, that devil sadistically murdered her, then stole property from her afterwards. She must have a patience and heart of a saint. Reminds me too much of Maria Goretti.
That devil also murdered Brandi June Henderson, then tried to murder the baby. Miraculously, her son, Tyrece Woods survived the horrific day. The next day after the bodies of Betty Jean Baucom and Brandi June Henderson were found at the Lake Apartments, that devil had the nerve to pretend consoling George Burrell regarding Brandi's horrific murder. He really didn't feel sorry for what he had done to the two women at the Lake Apartments. Nor did he feel sorry for the eight other murders preceding those two. The women were killed on the same day. Betty, on Wednesday morning before dawn. Brandi, on the same night between 8 PM and 11 PM. Ms. Betty Jean Baucom's body was found on Thursday morning. This is when the police were getting serious and to warn women of a serial killer going around preying Black women.
I will always remember the young women Whose lives were destroyed before they were even began on their journeys. They were enjoying the time of their short lives.
May they rest in peace 😥 🙏 🕊

Unironically, vegans need to be advocating for more and better sheep, llama, and alpaca farms. Wool is one of the best fabrics we have in terms of versatility, longevity and most importantly, insulation. Even wet, it retains 80% of it’s insulation potential.
AND IT DOESN’T SHED MICROPLASTICS

I'm beyond tired of White People using interracial unions as "brownie points" for making up for centuries of institutional racism.
Having mixed babies does not get rid of institutional racism and its effects. White Supremacist Racism is still in play. Power and privilege is afforded to anyone able to pass as White. Know this. Know this. KNOW THIS.
Ugh!
They act like mixed-race people are some brand new “exotic” idea! Have they been paying attention to the world? LOOK AROUND, FOOLS! You’re just mad that you’re the main ones fetishizing POC. FUCK.

This is when the police were getting serious and to warn women of a serial killer going around preying Black women.
From Julian Abagond:
Brandi June Henderson (1975-1994) was a sweet woman killed by one of America’s worst serial killers, Henry Louis Wallace, the Charlotte Strangler. She was just 18, a high school student. He also tried to kill her ten-month-old baby, Tyrece. Henderson’s murder helped to lead the police to Wallace.
Wallace was a friend of her boyfriend, Verness Lamar “Squeaky” Woods. He and Wallace worked together at Chuck E. Cheese. The year before they had worked together at Golden Corral – along with Henderson herself.
Henderson lived in the Lake apartments in east Charlotte, North Carolina, right near the Eastland Mall. (They are now called the Sailboat Bay Apartments.) Wallace often came by even when Woods was not there. On the night of March 8th 1994 he came there to rob, rape and kill her.
When he first came to the apartment Woods was there, so Wallace said he was leaving town and wanted to say goodbye. He then visited one of their neighbours, Betty Baucum, and robbed and killed her. After that he came back. Henderson was alone.
She let him in. He pressed her to him and demanded money. She gave him what little she had: $15 in her purse and some change in an old Pringles can. Then he took her to her bedroom and forced her to have sex. After that she was on her knees praying. He said he was not going to hurt her and asked for a hug. When she hugged him he put a towel round her neck and killed her.
After that Wallace heard the baby crying. He put a towel round his neck too till he stopped crying. Then he took Henderson’s television and stereo, put them in the back of Baucum’s car and later sold them to buy some crack.
Later that night when Woods came back from work he found her dead but he was able to get the baby to the hospital in time to save his life.
Her funeral was heartbreaking. The pastor said:
We are living in some terrible times. We are living in some troubled times where the value of a human life is too low.
She was laid to rest wearing a pink dress, holding a picture of her baby boy.
Betty Jean “Susie” Baucum (1970-1994) was one of the 11 women killed by the Charlotte Strangler, Henry Louis Wallace, one of America’s worst serial killers. She was a nice, quiet woman. He killed her two days after her 24th birthday.
She was a manager at Bojangles, a fast food place near Eastland Mall in east Charlotte, North Carolina. She came to the city from Laurel Hills, a small town a hundred miles to the east. She was working 50 hours a week to save money to complete her education. She had a three-year-old daugher, B.J.
https://abagond.wordpress.com/DOCUME%7E1/jackie7/LOCALS%7E1/Temp/moz-screenshot.jpg
She knew Wallace through his girlfriend, who also worked at Bojangles. Someone else who had worked at Bojangles, Caroline Love, was killed two years earlier. By Wallace. But no one knew.
Wallace was hooked on crack. He needed money bad to buy more. Two weeks had gone by since he had killed and robbed Vanessa Mack. It did not even make the news, so he thought it would be safe to rob and kill someone else.
He went to see Brandi Henderson, but her boyfriend (a friend of Wallace’s) was there. Wallace would come back later, but in the meantime he went to see Baucum. She lived in the same Lake apartments: he had seen her car, a blue 1988 Nissan Pulsar, parked outside.
He asked Baucum if he could use her telephone. She let him in. He acted like he was looking up a number but then when she turned her back, he put his hands round her neck and asked for the combination to unlock the safe at Bojangles. He had robbed Bojangles twice before.
It took her 30 minutes to produce the combination. She wrote it down for him and he let go of her. She asked why he was doing this. He said he was sick and had hurt many people. She said she forgave him and told him he needed help. That got him angry: he pushed her to floor and they fought. He got the upper hand, put a towel round her neck and held it so tight she nearly passed out. He took her to the bedroom, undressed her and raped her and killed her.
He took $80 from her purse as well as her keys, her television, and her gun. She had gotten the gun for protection a while back when her roommate had moved out.
A week later, after she was found murdered, Betty was given a lavish and big funeral with many of her friends, co-workers, her family, and relatives in attendance. She was entombed in a church cemetery afterward.
I will always remember the young women Whose lives were destroyed before they were even began on their journeys. They were enjoying the time of their short lives.
May they rest in peace 😥 🙏 🕊

The Madonna/Magdalene Ideology in how society view victims of serial murder in America
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The iconography of Mary and Magdalene, stereotypically depicted as the “madonna/magdalene by Italian Renaissance artists, Fra Filippo Lippi and Carlo Crivelli.  Most men and women have dualistic view toward women, then and now.  Today, we use the terms good women and bad women. Or, to be precise,  good mother/girl next door and loose woman/party girl
In the 1990s media depiction of serial murder victims, the media used photos of serial murder victims.  The media used such photos either to elicit sympathy and compassion or that of sensation, shock, and scornful judgment.  The Madonna/whore complex is used in such depictions of women, victim or not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Miss Betty Jean Baucom, beautiful young lady victim of serial killer Henry Louis Wallace.  Her graduation photo is used to evoke sympathy and compassion.  She’s depicted in blue, the traditional color of the Madonna.
Miss Jenny Soto, very beautiful Black Latina victim of serial killer Joel Rifkin.  Mainstream media relentlessly used her picture to disparage her reputation.  Margarita Gonzalez, Jenny Soto’s mother, was angry with the media’s depiction of her daughter and complained about the sensational headline in the media after Joel’s confession in June 1993.
American society have a Madonna/whore ideology when it comes to women. From historic times, societies in general always label women as either good, chaste women, wives, mothers, nuns or they’re loose women, prostitutes, and mistresses/courtesans.  Renaissance artists reflected societal views of women through the Madonna paintings by famous artists Lippi, Botticelli, Raphael, etc., or nude paintings such as the Venus of Urbino by Titian.   In American society, the Madonna/whore ideology is strong, tinged with class and race components.  White and other non black women, especially East Asian women are considered the "sacred Madonna” while Black, Native American, and Latinas, especially Caribbean Latinas are labeled as “bad women” deserving of their fate.  This view is far more widespread as the lack of coverage, the disparaging remarks in and out of cyberspace, and general indifference on the part of law enforcement to solve murders of Black women in America and Indigenous women in Canada. The Madonna/whore mythology were used in how the public reacted to murders of Black women, the Heidnik, the Larry Bright, Gary Ridgeway, the Sowell case and the Henry Louis Wallace cases in particular. For example, the Cleveland convenience store owner showed sympathy to Anthony Sowell, whom he said in the Unseen interview that “he took out the garbage”.  That’s a blatantly hateful remark.  He saw the victims, living and dead, of Anthony Sowell as being “worthless” and “undeserving” to him. He labelled the victims as worthless drug addicted and prostitutes. Sowell himself justified the murders by labelling the women as being less than perfect. Again using the Madonna/whore ideology was at work in connection to the inaction on the part of Charlotte police in connection with the Henry Louis Wallace serial murder case, a concerned young woman named Angala Grooms in East Charlotte stated that the police did not care because they viewed the pretty young Black female murder victims of Henry Louis Wallace:  “I feel like they wrote us all off as some fast little black girls who didn’t really matter.” During the 1996 Wallace capital murder trial, the defense lawyers tried to taint the young womens’ reputation but the witnesses, friends, family, co-workers, colleagues, and the prosecutor vigorously countered the defense by bolstering the virtues and even saintliness of the young victims of Wallace.  The jury didn’t buy the defense and voted for the death penalty for the nine first-degree murders and rapes of young Black women.
