SEA TO SEA
Yearly coast-to-coast road trips.
An average of 2,500 miles driven every month.
A total of 198,000 miles on my car.
1 car engine replaced.
I can’t always remember the name of where I’ve been, I can almost never remember how I got there (I’m a slave to my GPS), I can rarely tell you what year I was in what place, but what I can always tell you is what it looked like. In my mind, this country is largely comprised of a collage of scenes from out my car window that somehow manage to look almost exactly alike while also being totally distinct. These images are diptychs taken in different states at any time from 2010 to 2014.

Xiejagiao, China -  2008
Xie Sulian, a 76-year-old retired farmer, describes her stomach ailment while at her home in Xiejagiao, a small village outside of Hangzhou, China. Sulian suffers from constant stomach pains, which have forced her to stop working the fields, drastically lowering her income and yet, she cannot afford to go see a doctor to heal herself. The village of Xiejagiao is a unique village in rural China in that the Communist Party of China has funded large scale residential builds outs for many of the farming residents. While the village is rural and small in population, huge multi-room and multi-floored homes fill the streets. Notably, because the families were so accustomed to living together in one-room homes, many continued to all sleep in the same room in these large homes, leaving many rooms empty. It is somewhat mysterious as to why this village was chosen to receive such lavish homes from the Party, but Sulian was convinced that because she did not receive a new home like many of her neighbors, she was purposefully being excluded, perhaps because of her illness and inability to work.

Savannah Strolls - April
After living in Savannah for the last 14 years, I’m finally leaving this summer (A bigger and better port city of the Deep South awaits!)
I’m now taking photographs of the simple daily scenes that have filled my vision for over a decade as I take my morning and evening walks.
This simple cellphone series is my goodbye to the aesthetic beauty of this quaint port city that ushered me into adulthood and will always make me feel a little tender.

Old working getting new love -ChaChing!
Both Mardi Gras Indian pictures have earned accolades before which is always rad. However, I'm super stoked that the Northside Skull and Bones photo is getting some attention for the first time! (All three were selected to be in a Louisiana culture show this summer- Details to come.)
Captions:
Spyboy - 2010
Michael Tenner Jr, spyboy for the Comanche Hunters Mardi Gras Indian Tribe, poses in front of Flagboy Vernon Freeman on St. Joeseph’s Night 2010. The pose is both for photographs and a part of preparations for the evening. The suits being worn are hand-sewn each year that an Indian masks and can weigh up to 250lbs and cost anywhere from $2,000 to $20,000. Even though he is only 6 years old, it is expected that Michael Jr, as Spyboy of the Comanche Hunters will always be in front of Freeman, looking out for other Indians as the tribes seek each other out to engage in ritual battle.

Chicken Mart  - 2010
A Mardi Gras Indian breaks away from the crowd during the Super Sunday procession in 2010. Super Sunday is a Mardi Gras Indian holiday when nearly all of at least 30 tribes known of in the city come out and parade together in uptown New Orleans giving the public a chance to see their hand-sewn suits.

Skull and Bones Gang - 2009
Young members of the Northside Skull and Bone Gang walk thru the streets of the Treme neighborhood in New Orleans on Mardi Gras 2009. The Gang begins at the Backstreet Cultural Museum in the Treme at daybreak on Fat Tuesday welcoming the beginning of Mardi Gras day by banging on the doors, windows and walls of homes with bones to wake up those inside. The gang has been the first presence out in the street on Mardi Gras day in New Orleans since at least the 1880s, coming out at or just before daybreak. The cultural tradition is rooted in reverence for the Haitian god Ghede, the guardian of the cemetery, and the spirit that reminds human beings of the brevity of life.

Always for Pleasure (1978) (by Fliefer)
"Rather, the films, most of them less than an hour long, are “brilliantly sympathetic, well-crafted essays,” as John Rockwell wrote in The New York Times in 1979, rife with deftly framed portraiture, cunningly observed social scenes, beautiful nature photography and the poetic juxtaposition of imagery and sound."
Case in point.
