I like Akechi a lot too. He’s an interesting character who has stuff going under the surface. I thought it was interesting that he was primarily interested in cleaning up the mess that Dark Star started, as a matter of pride and also his history with Namikoshi. That is to say, he had a somewhat selfish motivation, which is definitely an interesting take on a detective character.

Yea, Kobayashi is hard for some people to be fan of. He has difficulty having empathy for other people, which a lot of people can’t relate to. Akechi does have empathy problems as well, but it’s not nearly as hardcore as Kobayashi. I’ve written about Kobayashi a bit before - I think he’s basically a sociopath and in the anime he has a little arc where he develops a slight bit of empathy.

I’d like to write a little bit about Akechi one of these days as well.

Yea, the justice themes and the moral ambiguity is also something I enjoyed a lot. I like how some of the criminals aren’t necessarily completely terrible bad people. You do have some like Watanuki, but then you have Kagami, Minami, Namikoshi, etc who felt like they had no choice but to take matters into their own hands. The scenario presented in the Rampo Kitan world where people can be released quickly just by pleading defense invites a difficult question of what should be done.

It’s noted in the end of anime that crime has gone down as a result of becoming vigilantes. I wish there was a second season as well - because I can easily see the story continuing since Dark Star hasn’t been defeated yet.
