Road Trip
Hey y’all, so I haven’t written anything in a very long time, so I though 2 o’clock on a Sunday night was the perfect time to change that. It would mean a lot if you could read and give me absolutely any feedback. I’m going to try get more up very soon!
Road trips with Tyler always started out the same: promises of singing our hearts out, junk food galore, sightseeing, sleeping under the stars every night close together to keep warm. In our time together we had travelled around several countries in Europe, and now had decided to venture out across the pond, since Tyler was spending so much more time here now. Orlando, Florida to New Orleans, Louisiana, a measly 9 hour drive. Nothing compared to what we were used to.
Tyler finished loading up the car while I locked up his small rented apartment. I had only been here once before, I flew out to surprise Tyler after his first WWE match on US soil, an expensive surprise but worth it to see the look on his face. We had spent a day locked up inside, catching up on lost time, before seeing the sights Florida had to offer, including a surprise trip to Disney, a dream of mine since I was a child, and showing me around the WWE Performance Centre. Tyler loaded the last thing into the car and closed the door, jumping into the passenger side, and with that cheeky little grin of his claimed that it had been a long week and was too tired to drive.
“Fine, but driver picks the music pal”, I said as I adjusted the driver’s seat and mirrors to suit my height instead of Tylers. I took Tyler’s phone and found my road trip playlist filled with all my favourite Broadway tunes, something Tyler had grown accustomed to on our previous trips together, and pressed play, and with the catchy tune of Kinky Boots, we were off. The first hour was spent discussing our separate lives, mine back in England in university, and Tyler’s hectic schedule. I was in my final year of an English literature degree so between that and a weekend job at a local bookstore, spare time came few and far between. Tyler seemed to be in a different place every time we spoke. I enjoyed hearing his stories and seeing the photos sent to me by his friends, each of which I had come to love, it got me through the long weeks apart. He had just done a group of shows around the UK before flying to Orlando, so sitting back beside him, his hand resting on my thigh, it felt right. He told me stories of drunk Trent on nights out, dancing with everyone in sight, told me about new vegan restaurants Pete kept finding in every new city they went to, about going to see Marks band after a show one night.
We soon stopped at a gas station in Gainesville to stock up on water, soda and snacks. Then, back in the car, the conversation drew to a close as we turned the volume up and enjoyed the beautiful scenery we were surrounded by.
“It’s funny how life turns out, isn’t it? When I first met you I had no idea who you were, or what we’d become, and now I’m driving through America with a WWE champion,” I revealed softly to Tyler, after thinking how surreal this moment was.
“Tyler?” I continued after getting no response, I looked over to find him sleeping peacefully in the seat next to me. I looked at him for a moment, and wondered how I got so lucky. I was with someone who genuinely cared for me, no matter what the distance between us is. I couldn’t wake him, and knew how much he needed the sleep. I mentally prepared myself for the remaining hours of the drive, turning the music down slightly.
‘So much for taking turns at the wheel’ I thought and laughed gently, ‘nothing ever changes’.
