Reasons why you should watch the second season of The Unsleeping City:

More Unsleeping City. That should be a motivator right there.

The digital battlemaps are actually really cool, guys. I didn't think I was gonna be able to handle watching the combat in the Zoom format, but the subway battle was riveting and it only gets better from there.

Pete and Sofia dealing with their newfound sobriety! There's a whole system in place for how they avoid relapsing and it's really cool and interesting to see!

Pete as a functioning adult... sorta! We get to see him fully in his own as the Vox Phantasma and it's great! Also, he gets an incredibly cool transfem hacker girlfriend named Maddie and we need to talk about her more!

Cody. Yeah, you've seen all the memes about the cringefail mall goth with the fork sword, but guess what? This cringefail mall goth has an arc, and it's awesome. It's an arc of failure and bad decisions, but it's an arc of learning from failure and bad decisions, and it's genuinely a pleasure to see. I need more people to talk about where Cody is at the end of the season, we've already got enough people making fun of him.

Ricky actually also has an arc! Yes, our sweet himbo still has room to grow, and grow he does! He gets to figure out who he is without the Questing Blade, he gets to find out what it's like when he meets someone he doesn't immediately get along with for the first time, and he gets to... actually, that's a spoiler, never mind!

Sofia's story is amazing. We see her struggle with her grief over Dale, we see her challenge and question the Order of the Concrete Fist and their constant mantra of "it is what it is," we see her persevere despite how often the universe seems to be intent on making Sofie Bikes suffer, and without going into too many spoilers, we see her win. She was already incredible in the first season, but this just takes it over the top.

Kingston... man, what is there to even say about how lovely Kingston's story is, without going into insane spoiler territory? If the first season was about Pete coming to his own as the Vox Phantasma, then the second season is about Kingston fully fulfilling his role as the Vox Populi---while in turn still allowing himself to want things for his own, to chase his own dreams, to both protect New York and to follow his heart. I love this old man to death, and this season cements it.

IGA. MOTHERFUCKING. LISOWSKI. I am sick and tired of her constantly getting voted last in "favorite Siobhan character" polls, because she is literally some of Siobhan's best character work ever. I do love Misty/Rowan, don't get me wrong, but Iga is quite literally the heart and the soul of this season---from her somewhat shady business practices to her witchy psychic energy to the fact that she's a mom in her mid-forties to the fact that her storyline rests on her being an immigrant with familial magic who's been taught to keep that magic hidden and under wraps but who learns to let people in and to be the first person to ask questions about all the power she's been given. I could write a full goddamn essay on how much I adore Iga, and maybe I will someday, but I'll just say this---if you're liking Van Chapman, then you will almost certainly like Iga. She's the best, she's insanely underrated, give my girl the respect she deserves, thank you.

THE VILLAINS IN THIS SEASON ARE TOP-FUCKING NOTCH. I'm not going to go too far into who or what they are---talking too much about them does dip into spoiler territory, and it's really something you gotta see for yourselves---but I'm just gonna say that the dream-realm BBEG is... hoo boy. Kalina was the prelude, The Stepmother is the result, and the main villain of this season is perhaps the most terrifyingly real and yet cosmically horrifying villain I have ever seen in this show. Not only are they an excellent addition to the lore of the world of The Unsleeping City, but they hit so fucking hard... and considering that this season was made and came out in the wake of quarantine, I'm betting that they hit even harder for people who had the honor of watching this season as it came out. The conflict of this season is so much more than the Dream Team fighting against Magic Amazon, and the dream-realm villain is a massive part of that.

So listen---I get that the Zoom format might not be for everyone, but I beg you, find ways to work around it. Listen to it in podcast form, have it on in the background, even read the transcripts if you so desire---just, please, please, please, for the love of god, give this beautiful story a chance. It's one of my favorite seasons of this weird and wonderful show, it has some of the most heartwrenching and poignant arcs that Dimension 20 has to offer, and it's just... it's just really good, you guys. One of the reasons I'm hoping for a season three is so this season gets released for full on YouTube, and it gets a resurgence in love and popularity just like Sophomore Year did.

There is something a bit unsettling about Comfrey wanting Olethra to join her in Zood.

Olethra only saw Comfrey when the woman visited Pilby. But Olethra’s dad didn’t want Comfrey around because he deemed her dangerous.

The last time Olethra even saw Comfrey was 8 years ago when she was 12 years old.

In that same year, Comfrey:

- Developed an estrangement with Olethra’s dad.

- Sent a letter to Daisuke who she hadn’t spoken to in years and asked him to watch over Olethra.

- Had a falling out with Montgomery.

Comfrey had the radio made for the sole purpose of contacting Olethra and asking her to join her in Zood.

All of that, mixed in with her gifting the mech to Olethra…
