WHAT IS A NICHE?
Your niche is essentially what you plan to blog about – your blog’s topic! The more specific you can get, the better. This blog’s niche, for example, is about blogging and social media. But I narrowed my niche down even more by gearing it towards new bloggers.
THE IMPORTANCE OF NARROWING YOUR NICHE
Now you may be thinking, ‘but Krista, isn’t leaving my niche broader better so I can reach more people?’ I had the same thought process starting out. But it’s about quality, not quantity. It’s a lot to get into right now, as it’s multi-layered. But suffice it to say that your blog may get a number of hits a day, but how quickly did the majority of them bounce? (Are you tracking your Google Analytics?) How many of them will return to become loyal readers?
When you leave your niche too general and blog about many different things, it can become confusing and even frustrating for readers. Look at it from a reader’s perspective. Sure, sometimes we browse the Internet to explore, but usually we’re in search of something specific. We’re all busy! So when we hop online, we navigate to various websites with basic expectations in mind. One is that when we arrive at each of these sites, we’ll consistently find what we’re expecting to in a timely manner.
For example, if you were to arrive at this blog expecting to find blogging and social media tips for new bloggers, you’d be confused if I also had a beauty and fashion category, or recipes. You may even get frustrated if on your 15-minute break you logged on to see that I randomly decided to post to one of those categories, rather than posting about blogging and social media. And worst case scenario, that one post could drive you away for good. >> READ MORE + FREE WORKBOOK! >>

If we're not passionate about our blog's niche, we will tire of it & run out of topics to blog about. We have to feel passionately about it. What is something that you naturally take part in & can't fathom it not being a part of your life in some way? #blog #blogging #bloggers #newbloggers #passion #niche
