Exploring The Incredible Impact Of Grounding Rod
When lightning strikes something, it looks for a path of least resistance. A grounding rod and wires are used to conduct the current from the lightning to the ground. This allows the lightning to pass through your expensive electronics instead of through it. Grounding rods and wires can also be used to create common ground: when a copper rod is driven into the ground, electric and electronic equipment is connected to it with wires or straps. LEC’s grounding rod also known as Chem-Rod, is ultra-efficient and can be used to replace as many as ten conventional rods. Lightning Protection Products – Everything You Need To Know
Lightning strikes can cause a fire, explosion, chemical release or mechanical disruptions within or around your facility.
At LEC, we know that all these risks must be considered and protected against when developing a lightning protection system. With over four decades of experience, our support and expertise have assisted thousands of businesses, both large and small, to achieve effective protection against lightning.
Our LPS are engineered with advanced technology and consist of the same four key components – air terminals, conductor/bonding, grounding, and transient/surge protection.
Air terminals – by LEC is based on the point discharge principle or charge transfer. It provides thousands of points with specific point separation, which simultaneously produce ions over a large area, thus preventing the formation of a streamer, which is a precursor of a lightning strike. Our patented Dissipation Array system prevents strikes by continually lowering the voltage differential between the ground and the charged cloud to below lightning potentials, even in the midst of a worst-case storm. Other products include Spline Ball Ionizer (SBI) for areas with low wind profiles, Spline Ball Terminal (SBT) to reduce the risk of direct strikes, and Streamer Delaying Air Terminal (SDAT) to delay upward streamer generation.
However, we also consider secondary lightning strikes and transient currents while designing a lightning protection system. Thus,
Conductors/bondings – These are required to create a low-impedance grounding system by using chemically charged electrodes to neutralize any stray voltage that may have entered the facility. Our lightning protection products include chem-Rod a low-impedance chemical grounding electrode that solves problems found with conventional grounding rods, LECWELD metal is an easy and efficient field welding system, and Grounding Augmentation Fill (GAF) is specially formulated to help create a low-resistance earth interface, and Smart Ground Testing Service includes computer modeling with a complete professional analysis to IEEE/IEC standards and practical recommendations.
Transient/surge protection – This is required to protect against transients traveling through data lines and another conductive path. Products include FG300K, FG225K Facility Guard, FGB220K, and TLX130K, which are high-performance UL 1449 Listed Type 1 SPD under our lightning protection products umbrella. Other products include Data Line Protector (DLP), Coaxial Line Protector (CLP), and LEC TE-POE-A.
Connect with us and get your facility protected.

This creates a path of least impediment for all your equipment in case the lightning causes an electrical surge.
LEC’s grounding rod also known as Chem-Rod, is ultra-efficient and can be used to replace as many as ten conventional rods. Advantages are:
Large surface area – the wider 25/8 inch diameter provides a larger surface area for a better connection to the earth.
Electrolytic Salts – In the presence of moisture, these salts dissolve and seep out of leach holes along with the electrode. The salts continually increase the soil’s conductivity, further reducing impedance and resistance.
Soil augmentation: GAF (Grounding Augmentation Fill) is a combination of organic soil materials that optimize the soil's conductivity around the Chem-Rod. Increasing the amount of GAF can decrease the overall system resistance, thereby increasing the system’s efficiency.
Easy Refills: Every Chem-rod comes with a standard removable cap and access cover for easy maintenance of the ground salt charge
Optimized pigtail: the 2-foot long, 4/0 AWG stranded pigtail is exothermically welded to the body of the Chem-Rod
Application: The Chem-Rod improves reliability for many applications, including:
Lightning protection systems
Prevention of accidents caused by static charge and stray currents
Protection of central communications, electronics, and AC power systems
Meeting grounding safety requirements for electrical substations
Ground fault neutralization
Safeguarding critical instrumentation and process-control equipment
Our services: Before a grounding rod or an entire grounding system can be installed, a few other activities must first be undertaken.
Risk assessment.
Complete soil resistivity survey.
Consulting to assess the practicality and usefulness of a given area to plan a customized solution.
Designing a complete solution to solve even the most complex challenges.
Installation of the approved system keeping safety in mind.
Audits, testing, and commissioning services are generally required at the end of the installation process.
Lightning Eliminators & Consultants Inc. are pioneers in this field for decades, and our name is synonymous with international standard protection and no strike warranty.

5 Reasons To Invest In Lightning Protection System For Your Facility
Lightning is a beautiful thing; nature’s own light show that flickers across the sky. However, lightning can also cause damage and disruption to both internal and external structures. It’s easy to overlook the damage and disruption that lightning can cause until it’s too late. The best way to reduce the risk of lightning damage and disruption is to implement a complete facility lightning protection system (FLPS). An FLPS protects not only roofs, walls, and other structural elements from direct lightning but also protects electrical circuits and communications, and process control systems from indirect or lightning-induced strikes.
Did you know that a lightning protection system that has been designed and installed according to accepted industry standards can last for two to three generations with little to no maintenance? Furthermore, when a structure is remodelled to meet new requirements, the majority of the components of a lightning protection system will remain usable when reconfigured. Or if a structure is torn down, the aluminium components and copper components can be easily recycled without deterioration.
The lightning protection system is a necessity for all facilities, and here are five reasons:
Climate change has increased the number of lightning strikes each year; every part of the country is at risk for lightning.
The devices that operate your facility and keep you, your investment, and your personnel safe — including security systems, heating and cooling equipment, and electronic appliances — can be knocked out by lightning surges, even if the lightning does not directly strike your facility.
Ordinary grounding and surge protection products do not protect against lightning; only systems complying with UL and Lightning Protection Institute standards provide reliable protection.
Lightning protection systems are custom designed and installed by our professional and experienced engineers, keeping the aesthetics of the building in mind.
Lightning protection is affordable, may reduce insurance premiums, and can enhance the value of your facility by providing peace of mind.
An innovative solution to lightning protection has emerged in the form of charge transfer technology, which acts as a shield from lightning strikes over the protected area. DAS lightning protection reduces operational costs and is our most reliable product. We also offer a “no strike” warranty, ensuring protection on all our installations.

How To Protect Your Facility From The Dangers Of Lightning Damage
Most lightning begins as an electrical disturbance inside a storm and travels through the clouds. Lightning can remain within the clouds or fly through the air and strike the ground. There are about 5 to 10 times more flashes in the clouds than on the ground.
Thus outdoor activities, including work, should be suspended at the first sign of bad weather. Here are some safety tips to avoid lightning damage while working outdoors:
Monitor weather conditions, and If your hair is standing on its end, you are in lightning’s electric field.
Just in case someone is caught outdoors when the storm is in the area, they should immediately seek appropriate shelter like in a building, low ground, in clumps of bushes, fully enclosed motor vehicle, etc.
Alternately, if the lightning is extremely close and you are outside, put your feet together, duck your head on your knees, and crouch down low in a baseball catcher’s stance.
Follow the 30/30 rule: if it takes less than 30 seconds to hear thunder after seeing a flash, then lightning is near enough to pose a threat.
If a co-worker gets struck by lightning, administer first aid immediately and seek medical assistance. It is entirely safe to touch them.
Here are some safety tips to avoid lightning damage while working indoors:
Do you know that Lightning enters structures in three ways: a direct strike, through wires or pipes extending outside the structure, or through the ground? Once in a structure, lightning can travel through electrical appliances, phone lines, plumbing, and radio/television reception systems. Lightning can also travel through metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.
Stay off corded phones, computers, and other electrical equipment that directly connects you to electricity.
Avoid plumbing, including sinks, baths, and faucets.
Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
Do not lie on concrete floors or lean against concrete walls.
A structural lightning protection system can neutralize direct lightning strikes. The main components of this system are air terminals (otherwise known as lightning rods), conductors linking the air terminals, and down conductors, which connect the air terminals to the earth. Seek customized solutions for lightning damage from Lightning Eliminators and Consultants Inc.

Lightning Surge Protection Devices – A Must-Have For Your Facility
With the proper installation of lightning surge protection devices, you can experience a sense of peace and security even during thunderstorms.
Why is an SPD so important?
It’s important to protect your electrical systems as much as possible, no matter how robust your energy system may be.
A lightning strike on your structure has the potential to cause the largest surge voltages out of any electrical force.
A lightning strike can wreak havoc on your system, so installing the best lightning surge protection devices is important.
A surge protector works by transitioning between high and low levels of impedance. At normal operating voltages, the surge protector operates in a high impedance state and will not affect your electrical system. The surge protector kicks in if the voltage rises above a certain level. It will surpass the excess voltage and divert it safely to the ground, preventing it from causing any harm. In other words, when the voltage is too high, the MOV redirects the excess voltage into the grounding wire, letting it dissipate safely. Then, a normal level of voltage continues to flow through. Metaphorically speaking, the MOV acts as a pressure-sensitive valve that only opens when there is too much pressure.
Surge protectors (SPDs) are installed in several stages: type 1 SPDs (lightning arresters), type 2 SPDs (surge arresters), and type 3 SPDs. Type 1 SPDs are most often installed in main switchboards, ideally at the cable entry point into the building, near the main earthing terminal (MET), and at the PEN distribution point. LEC has several type 1 SPDs in its range: FG300K Series, G225K Series,  FGB220K Series, TLX130K Series, etc.
However, the need for lightning surge protection devices depends on numerous factors. Our range of surge protection devices is designed and developed with lightning protection and should not be considered an option. A team of experienced engineers develops each product with the aim of solving specific problems faced by industries.
Installing a lightning surge protection device from Lightning Eliminators & Consultant Inc. ensures the security of your company data, employees, and facility during an unpredictable electric surge and ensures the continued function of critical systems.
