lucky for us, the BBC’s radio stations are cool as hell and always upload their shows so people can listen to them later, which is the case with matt’s interview from today (and technically unravelling’s radio premiere, mind you), so you can still check it out if you’ve missed it but i just thought it would be nice to have some highlights from the interview written down:

• this song is matt’s ‘first time ever using an eight string guitar’ (and i didn’t know there was more of him coming so imagine if the interview had just ended there 💀)

• playing an eight string guitar is ‘like having a bass guitar and a guitar at the same time all in one thing, it’s like a crazy instrument’

• ‘muse is not a metal band but literally, i got the guitar and the first thing i wrote was unravelling, it just came straight out, boom! so sometimes a new instrument is enough to inspire something new’

• ‘we weren’t actually planning to tour this year, we were planning to make a new record and then i think foo fighters pulled out of a couple shows in europe and a couple of them were like, metal festivals. so for example, the one we’re playing tomorrow is called hellfest in fwance, it’s like the same as like, download but in fwance’

• matt decided to record unravelling in time for touring hard rock festivals, and so it could be the first song towards the album cycle.

• ‘it could’ [dictate the pace of what’s coming next for muse], ‘this guitar is really cool! i’m hoping to write a few more tracks off it as well. i think the next album will definitely have some heavier stuff on it, but i mean, our albums are always pretty diverse so we’ll see how it goes! at the moment i’m quite digging this heavy vibe, yeah’

• they talked about dan lancaster, who’s ‘been playing us live for… i don’t know, i wanna say about 6 years or so? he mixed a couple tunes on our last album and he did a great job and we’ve always known he’s a great producer so this is our first time really bringing him in as a producer’. it was pretty much said he’s the one who inspired this metal vibe considering he has more experience in this genre.

• ‘we’re just opening up to sort of, a few creative period, really, i’m writing new songs now, we don’t have a full album yet but we’re gonna start getting into making a new collection of songs, whether it be an album or not, whether there’ll be a series of EPs (!!!) or singles, i don’t know yet but we’re definitely very creative right now’

Having an abusive family and being gay in a country like this is so ass like what do you mean no matter what I can't find love and when I get harassed for being gay I'm the one that gets into trouble

And then i have really bad attachment issues and I get attached to someone i shouldn't then people judge me for it I'm sick of joking about it
