HSM1 Timeline

Based on my earlier post trying to figure out which scenes take place which day, I've come up with two quite similar timelines for movie. Both involve overlooking a couple minor outfit changes, and one involves interpreting a line of dialogue a bit creatively. I think both are plausible enough, though.

Both timelines are the same toward the beginning and toward the end, so I'll just point out where they differ. It's essentially the last half of Thursday to midday Tuesday that shifts one way or the other.

I tend to be really wordy and overexplain things to the point of confusion lol, so I included graphics to follow along with for my two proposed timelines. Please ask questions if something doesn't make sense or if I missed something super obvious.

I tried to include timestamps, then promptly forgot, so there here and there throughout. I can edit them in if anyone wants, but if you know the movie pretty well, you probably don't need them.

The first 23 minutes (not counting the ski lodge) are definitely all on the first Monday back from winter break based on everyone's clothes. This includes homeroom, Getcha Head in the Game, detention, basketball practice, and Gabriella and Taylor talking after school. This does mean that Getcha Head in the Game and the later basketball practice are all the same day, but I think that's explained by saying the song takes place during an informal practice at lunch time or something. The following scene of Troy and Coach playing basketball in the backyard is also probably the same day - there's technically a clothing change, but it makes sense that they would change before playing.

The auditions are Tuesday, along with all related scenes (until the 38 minute mark). Sharpay and Ryan change outfits, but that makes sense - they're dressing up for the audition.

Sharpay finding out about the callbacks is Wednesday morning. This also includes the Stick to the Status Quo number, Darbus in the locker room, and the rooftop scene.

After that, it gets kind of dicey because it's a montage. If you follow the montage chronologically, I think it has to cover at least three days because Troy's shirt switches multiple times. However, it's only two shirts? He goes from the blue vertical striped shirt, to a plain blue shirt, back to the vertical striped shirt. Kelsi wears two outfits during the montage, while Gabriella only wears one. So if we assume these scenes within the montage are in chronological order, to me that means it’s at least four school days, putting us at the following Tuesday, which blows the whole timeline out of the water.

But let’s be generous and assume the shirt changing is a continuity error, and that the whole montage and the scene in the gym with Coach Bolton (since Gabriella’s wearing the same shirt) all take place over just one day. That means all that takes place Thursday, week 1.

Now here's where the timelines differ.

The next couple of scenes are Troy and Chad in the library and Taylor and Chad plotting to separate Troy and Gabriella (around 55 to 57 minutes into the movie). These two scenes take place the same day as each other since Chad's wearing the same shirt in both scenes. Troy's in a different outfit than he was during the montage on Thursday, which suggests it's the next day (Friday).

However, there's a line of dialogue during their scheming in which Chad and Taylor agree that they'll start their plan **tomorrow** - this is where it kind of branches and you can choose how to interpret things. If by "we start tomorrow," we take it to mean all the webcam stuff happens the following day, then the library and scheming scenes can't take place on Friday (since "tomorrow" would be the weekend and no one would be at school). If that's the case, we could say it's still Thursday and Troy changed after practice, hence the outfit swap. (This also implies they're all at the school really late for some reason, but I think it's plausible enough with the fact that Taylor's in chem club, Chad's on the basketball team, and Sharpay and Ryan are in drama club.)

Or we could say the library scene and the scheming took place on Friday, and choose to interpret the "we start tomorrow" as in, for example, they're going to buy the webcam tomorrow, do further coordination tomorrow, etc. This type of stuff could take place over a weekend, so the scheming scene could be Friday. This makes more sense with Troy's outfit change, but personally I think it's a generous way to interpret the meaning of the "tomorrow" line.

The whole webcam stuff is the next school day, whether that's Friday or Monday. Chad changes clothes over the course of carrying out their plan, but no one else does, so I feel like that's written off as him trying to be in East High colors for the locker room scene to match everyone else.

The quick shot of Troy and the basketball team outside, where he pushes them aside to run laps, and the shots of him and Gabriella in their respective backyards can be anytime after school that day, and during the weekend if we choose to say the webcam scene was Friday.

Gabriella ignoring him in the cafeteria is the next school day, either Monday or Tuesday. This is the same day that Chad and Taylor come clean to Troy and Gabriella, respectively.

After this, the timelines realign. Troy visiting Gabriella at her house can't be any later than Tuesday, whether that's the same day as Taylor and Chad come clean or the following day, because otherwise the rest of the timeline is completely illogical (and everything's a little questionable already.) They're in different clothes than they were in the cafeteria, but maybe they both changed after school if all of this took place Tuesday.

The following scenes, starting with a quick shot of basketball practice (around the 1:12:30 mark - sorry, completely forgot to include timestamps almost immediately) and going until Sharpay and Ryan convince Darbus to change the callback time are all Wednesday. It's all extracurriculars (basketball practice, chem club/decathlon practice, rehearsing with Kelsi, and drama club), so it's all most likely after school.

The only scene on Thursday, week 2 is when Troy/Gab/Chad/etc. find out the callback day is moved from Thursday to Friday. This means they found out the day of, so they had originally been planning to do the callbacks the same day they find out they were moved.

Everything else takes place Friday. Easy enough.

So, ahem, in conclusion, the timeline in HSM1 is tight and a tad bit questionable, but I think it's close enough that if you squint, it works. The biggest pitfall is Thursday, week 1, which crammed a whole lot into one day and had some questionable outfit changes that I had to ignore in order to make the rest of the timeline work.

HSM1 did what it needed to do in order to set up all our characters n relationships n whatnot, very good intro 8/10

HSM3 tried too hard- it was still good, don't get me wrong, but it lost a bit of that DCOM spark somewhere along the way, 6/10

HSM2 IS EVERYTHING

Rocking summer romance? ✅ Troy and Gabriella running thru a golf course while the sprinklers are going off? Tell me that's not relationship goals. Honestly their entire romance plot line in this movie is basically a fanfic, from the necklace in the beginning to the picnic on the golf course and late night swim to the angsty breakup power ballad to the fluffy resolution. Troy and Gabriella are a fanfic.

Banging timeless songs? ✅ ✅ What Time is It is still on my summer playlist, Work This Out is one of the first songs I play when doing chores, Every Day and You Are the Music in Me were on my wedding playlist- and don't even get me started on how often I still quote Fabulous

Relationships and friendships that feel real and really pull you into the not-so-realistic story? ✅ ✅ ✅ Everyone- even Sharpay and Ryan- feels WAY more fleshed out, and the way the students work together and off each other is incredible

ONE OF THE GREATEST MEMES TO EVER COME FROM ANY MOVIE EVER??? ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ Bet On It is a MASTERPIECE but the way they choreographed it was SO BAD and it's SO FUNNY

HSM2, in theory, really wasn't necessary; disney could've jumped from HSM1 to HSM3 without a problem (especially since the events in HSM2 are never mentioned in HSM3 EVER). It was made to rake in that sweet sweet cash, but they decided to do so with love and care, the way fanfic authors do- canon characters are more fleshed out, relationships are built upon and are more realistic, the story is still fucking bonkers but if you think about it as an AU then everything makes sense!

In conclusion, HSM2 is essentially a giant fanfic framed as a continuation from the first movie, and is overall the best of the trilogy, 11/10, and more people need to give it the respect it deserves- yes I'm prepared to die on this hill, it was probably one of the ones Troy was jumping on during Bet On It

Speaking of Bet On It, all I want (and will probably never get) is a full recreation of the music video by none other than Jeon Jungkook. He's the only member who could really pull it off and I would sell my soul to see him perform the choreo as is

(I just want to clarify that I am not stating any of this as the exact reason why you may love it so much, as I am not you and therefore don't actually know how/why you feel the way you do, I just wanted to share my thoughts and opinions on this beloved childhood movie of mine 🥺🥺)

omg i adore how much you love this movie and you really worded exactly it!! the first one was okay, not really my cup of tea, but the second one brought me so much joy!! the music and the choreo and just all the musical numbers as well as the storyline just felt so, so good. and yeah it's cheesy and silly but it's also so heartfelt and has the genuineness to it that was such a joy to watch! now i'm having so much fun listening to the songs over and over lol i regret thinking i was "too cool" for it back in the day. it really does have so much heart!

FANFIC ARC

After the main story ending, Jihoon has grown up a little more - mid 20s with a mature frontal lobe - and dates and tries to go on with his life but he still can't let go of Liza. The women he dated were people that reminded him of her but when he saw their true selves, he realized he was projecting and saw them as replacements. so he just stopped dating because it was a waste of everyone involved's time -clearly

throughout the years, he kept in contact with Author-san to keep up with the novel as it finished and even made requests on like side stories with Liza - which she gave one for his bday like new things that happened post-canon (including the epilogue with the guy she inserted to represent Jihoon -- Jihoon got jealous thooo) - but like once they started college though, she had to stop writing so Jihoon was sad about that

he gets a little fascinated by what Liza in author's body had told him about the shared body different consciousness situation and tries to think of ways to replicate that situation again.

He started getting into fanfiction once author-san stopped writing about them as a way to cope -- he writes about isekai-ing into her world as a (mid-position; second son) and bumping into her during her expeditions -- she's in the middle of something related to his family's estate so he offers her help. He doesn't reveal himself to her but they fall in love again as he joins her group and travels around. = the isekai is just to be a self-insert = "what if i was in her world and we fell in love and she had no memories of the past so they make new memories together" -- i think he would be lowkey obsessed so 100k fic

because he writes this up in one night, he does share it online anonymously as like a "Good Villainess" novel - he only makes the first few chapters - up until they start they're kiss kiss fall in love arc -- because that's how far he edited in.

he takes a nap because he spent his weekend on this lol but then he's actually isekai-ed

SEARCH ARC

He is in the body of a person he doesn't know. The memories don't come and he's in a panic because people are calling him by a different name but they're not looking at him like he's crazy because the OG was sick and they think it altered his brain. -- He figures out it was a sickly second son of a (mid-position) and he also has an inkling that this isn't a dream but could be an isekai so he preps himself to meet the OG owner in his dreams but each night, nothing.

during the days, he works on checking what world he's ended up in and hears familiar names (the territory, emperor, etc) as he gets accustomed to his daily life as a (mid-position) - he earns and saves and enjoys his time because he can't figure out the way out of wherever he is. BUT perchance the day he goes out, he hears her name and it clicks that he might be in HER story. so in his free time he tries to scavenge the pubs for any new news on her while preparing to go searching for her (its been about a year now)

he has a guestimate of where she might be and prepares to go there only to find out she goes somewhere else - a place needing help -- near the capital (at the capital he gets info on her backstory and the life she's lived so far - because he meets the girliepop) but his hometown gets hit by something so he comes back and sees her there helping out lol

"Here Ms. Darbus!" A single graceful hand is raised among the small crowd of people at the front rows.

"We're ready when you are." The girl-boy blond pair who Zeke assumes to be Sharpay and Ryan Evans stand up from their seats. Zeke watches them in the sane way a tired dad on a sofa would watch his favorite shows on a TV as the pair moved towards the stage for their audition.

Snaps echo through the speakers and the curtains draw to close. Zeke shifts in his seat to lean on his right palm, a little more curious about the performance of the pair. He thinks to himself that he might as well catch an interesting performance before he leaves.

An unfamiliar upbeat song begins to play and the pair appear from the curtains while they begin to sing along.

Throughout the performance, Zeke can't help but notice how the girl shines so brightly with the spotlight on her. Her clear angelic voice gives him unexpected goosebumps. When she smiles, he can't help but wish that it was one directed to him. And when he looked at her eyes, he could feel the sincere passion and energy she had deep inside. It was inspiring to watch her perform and he felt like rooting for her like a dedicated fan.
