2012 rearview
Well, the list of albums that delighted me last year, in one way or another, was way longer than anticipated. And I guess I'm just a poor editor but, after the first year-in-review-show (on the 1st) didn't represent nearly enough, it was probably inevitable that a 3rd week of favorites might happen.
So, here's the setlists for this year, so far, and be assured a few good albums were left in the bag. Next week will back to looking forward. You can listen along in the archives at www.cfru.ca. Lets Get Lost- Tuesdays at 8pm.

4 months since the last posting but there have been Lets Get Lost shows every week. You've been following along, of course, or at least catching up on the archives, right?
This post-Guelph Jazz Fest edition featured a couple of recordings that were still warm from...well, I guess they don't press CDs', but these fresh items were accurate representations of the shows we saw at the beginning and end of the festival.
Beautiful Tool is the Mary Margaret O'Hara and Peggy Lee collaboration that delighted and truly entertained the packed house on Wed. night.
Going All Fancy is the work of duo of Brotzman and Adasiewicz that seemed an unlikely pairing on paper but worked well in a push and shove sort of way.The physical and aggressive performance was much needed at 2am Sun. morning.
In between was a series of highs of the sort that we've come to expect from the GJF, but not take for granted. Check out fellow No Wrong Notes witness, "Zig Zag Wanderer" for a more complete review of some highlights.
I would add that the Matt Shipp/ Darius Jones show cemented my respect for them both and expanded on the beautiful and powerful themes sketched out on their album, Cosmic Lieder.
And we continue to celebrate the shear joy to be found on our album of the summer...The Cherry Thing!
We'll have some live music on the next edition of Lets Get Lost and more in the weeks to come. Tune in to the archives any old time...www.cfru.ca Tues. at 8pm

last weeks set list:
Rob Brown Ensemble - Crown trunk Root Funk - Ghost Dog

Side A - A New Margin
Dave Douglas - Freak In - Eastern Parkway
Trio M - The Guest House - Sat Nam

Han Bennink/ Brodie West/ Terrie Ex - Let's Go - Side 2
Mash Potato Mashers - Hooray - Jumping beans
Thelonious Monk - Misterioso - Nutty
Devin Grey - Dirigo Rataplan - Talking With Hands
I'm pretty excited about the upcoming gig by Bennink/ West/ Ex in Toronto on the 22nd. of June. It's at a place called Double Double Land in the Kensington Market area. Their "Let's Go" album of improv push and pull is exactly the kind of racket I love. The irrepressible Han Bennink has sparked up many a performance I've witnessed and his sheer energy belies his senior citizen status. Brodie West is at the centre of one of my favourite bands - Drumheller and has some other way cool projects worth your consideration, not the least being his involvement with the Getachew Mekuria and The Ex project that toured through Ontario a few years back. His connection with the Ex is continued here as Terrie Ex completes this trio and brings his unpredictable guitar styling to the mix. His part in the OffOnOff performance in T.O. a couple of years ago helped make that show one of the most inspiring things I've ever witnessed. Really.
So, not to heap too much anticipation on this event, but you should try to check this out at their gig in Montreal on the 20th, T.O. on the 22nd or on the west coast shortly thereafter. The dates are posted on www.theex.nl . See you there.
Don't forget, to hear this set of music, go to the archives at www.cfru.ca . Tuesdays at 8pm. Lets Get Lost.

You can hear the long and productive history of Ducret, Berne, and Tom Rainey being displayed for us in the sharp and exciting interplay.
If you're in the Ottawa area, you'll get a chance to witness a rare performance by this trio at the jazz festival on June 29th. Don't miss this.

Frank Lowe - The Loweski - Pt. 4
Charles Gayle Trio - Streets - Compassion 2
If you are attending Victo this year, I'm hope you are excited about witnessing the Matana Roberts presentation of part 1 of the Coin Coin project. It's one of the gigs I really wish I could see this year. Sigh.
I'm very happy that we received the newest ESP recordings last week (Franks Lowe and Wright). Terrific period recordings from these underrated reedsmen on rare lineup dates, from a label that has been mentioned more lately in reference to a label formed by former ESP folks - Northern Spy.
Northern Spy has recent albums by Charles Gayle, Neptune, Chicago Undergroung Duo, The Spanish Donkey, Haunted House, Old Time Relijun, etc. as part of a solid roster worthy of your attention.

Lets get lost set list:
Mary Halvorson Quintet - Bending Bridges - The Periphery of Scandal
Eucalyptus - s/t - Jelly Roll
Atomic - Here Comes Everybody - Milano
Devin Gray - Dirigo Rataplan - Katahdin
Resonance Ensemble - What Country Is This? - Open Window Theory
AIMTorchestra - Year of The Boar - Year of The Boar
Corkestra - Gas Station Sessions - Kurk
Ask The Oracle - s/t - Surfing to Canada
Dennis Gonzalez Yells At Eels - Ressurection & Life - Humo En La Manana
Wilson / Lee / Bentley - Escondido Dreams - Man & Dog
On a sultry June night at the Horseshoe Tavern, back in 2008, Ken Vandermarks' Powerhouse Sound performed a thrilling, thunderous set - true to the name of the ensemble. But early arrivals were treated to two terrific opening acts. Colin Fisher and Geordie Haley performed an improvised set that showcased their skills and creativity and then came a larger outfit from Holland that I knew little about - Corkestra. Led by keyboardist Cor Fuhler and including a sort of whos-who of Dutch improvisors, Corkestra were an absolute delight. Fuhlers compositions made brilliant use of the players at his disposal in both solos and full band arrangements.
He made reference from the stage to a recording session that day on the "island". The Gas Station Sessions are the result of that day at Dale Morningstars' Gas Station studio on Toronto Island. Released about a year ago, This recording captures the unique and often quirky approach to mid-sized ensemble music that Cor Fuhler employs. Its a rare thing, these days, to have access to a larger ensemble and then to compose and arrange music that paints outside of the lines.
The short set in the middle of this weeks show featured a couple of other large outfits that I love. Ken Vandermarks Resonance Ensemble and the AIMToronto Orchestra arranged and conducted by Kyle Brenders take different approaches to the big band thing but both can give you that thrill of punctuating a phrase with a wall of air hitting you in the chest. Nothing quite like it.

HOLY COW I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS ALBUM I CANNOT WAIT
Yes, the all-caps are necessary. Most of my new music is acquired on a kind of discovery basis, stumbling across things that sound good and slowly worm their way into my musical heart. Sometimes, though, I anticipate an album, wait for it impatiently. Do you remember running to a record store on a Tuesday morning, to grab a fresh release? Do people do that anymore? When I worked in a record store, I took great delight in working late on Monday nights, ripping open boxes and pulling out the brand-new CDs to line the shelves.
Just the other day, I found out that Neneh Cherry and The Thing had collaborated an album, to be released next month. Why did nobody tell me this? Never would I have fathomed this particular combination! The woman whose Homebrew album delighted teenaged me! The freewheeling, badass jazz band who delights thirtysomething me! Look, they’re covering an MF Doom song here! And listen here, they’re covering a Suicide tune there!
It’s been a while, but I am going to be the first person through the record store on the day this comes out. And the waiting with excitement is almost as much fun as the listening that comes later.

4/24/12 cfru
The Let's Get Lost radio program has been broadcasting weekly for over 10 years on local community stations here in the Waterloo region. For the past year and a half CFRU-FM has been its happy home and tuesday nights is is when we spin the finest in new and future favorite jazz and improv selections. Sometimes pre-planning is involved, but most often a huge pile of selected discs are edited into a 90 minute time slot. I do sometimes dig back into the very extensive LGL library or the excellent CFRU shelves, but there is so much terrific new music available now that it's a challenge to keep up. Quite frankly, I love that challenge.
Playlist for Tuesday 4/24/12 8pm - 9:30pm
Marc Ribot - Spiritual Unity - Spirits
Drumheller - Glint - Nifac63charlie
October Trio - New dream - The Park
Benoit Delbeq / Francois Houle - Because She Hpoed - Nancali
Ab Baars/ Ken Vandermark/ Paal Nilsson-Love - Abet!? - Side 1
Dave Leibman/ Ellery Eskelin/ Tony Marino/ Jim Black - Non Sequitur - Tin Baroque
Tim Berne - Snake Oil - Simple city
Charles Gayle - Streets - Compassion 1
Chicago Underground Duo - Age of Energy - Castle in Your Heart
Steven Bernstein - MTO Plays Sly - You Can Make It If You Try
Mary Halvorson Quintet - Bending Bridges - Sea Cut Like Snow
Check out the archives at cfru.ca for all the excellent programming Guelph community radio has to offer.
And, don't forget to get to FIMAV early enough to check out Ms. Halvorsons gig

Record Store Day
Record Store Day has come and gone for another year and I'm disappointed to have to admit that I did not make it to any of the fine shops in our area yesterday. Alas, work took me far away for the entire day, so i made up for it today and visited Encore Records in downtown Kitchener. A very fine shop, as all who visit are sure to admit and I found it still stocked with plenty of the record day special items that hopefully had shoppers flocking. Shopclerk Al said the traffic was steady and the receipts were better than last years event. Now that's encouraging. There are plenty of times when I've been the only customer in the store - Encore or Orange Monkey in Waterloo (another fine shop)- and while it's great to shoot the breeze with the folks behind the counter, I really want them to continue and thrive.
What made my day was the 7in. 45rpm record on hold for me. Seems the store only got 1 copy of this single called Abet?! from the Terp record label. Side A is a performance by Ab Baars -clarinet / Ken Vandermark - tenor sax / Paal Nilssen-Love - drums. Side B features Mats Gustafsson - baritone sax in a solo gig. Both were recorded in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia during separate "saxophone" projects of the Ex. If you've followed the Ex over the past decade or so, you'll be aware of their many trips to Ethiopia, not only to perform, but to create opportunities for the artists in that country. The European and American artists that have accompanied the Ex on those trips have expanded the scope and reach of the Ex, and have contributed to the music scene in that country as well as being affected by musicians there.
Terp records is the medium that the Ex set up to expose not only the music of Ethiopia to the world , but also projects featuring collaborations and fusions with the visiting musicians from Holland elsewhere. Perhaps the best known release in that vein would be Moa Anbessa by Getachew Mekuria and the Ex plus guests. All those who witnessed the shows in Toronto/ Guelph a few years back by this ensemble I'm sure will still get all enthusiastic when reminiscing.
So, yeah. I still get a buzz from carrying home a new plastic waffle by artists I love on a label I respect from a store I want to visit next week when the stuff I ordered this week comes in. Long live the record store!
