sometimes  cj's  attitude  surprised  him.  it  was  always  with  a  certain  air  of  whatever  but  sometimes  there  was  a  earnestness  that  swept  him  away.  "i'll  keep  that  in  mind  ,  dude  ,"  liam  replied  ,  genuinely  touched  at  his  friend's  willingness  to  help.  "both  for  the  dog  and  the  ribs.  but  i  think  i'll  go  through  the  more  official  channels  first  ,  before  we  go  through  your  back  alley  contacts." his  gratefulness  disappeared  the  moment  cj's  foot  hit  his  shin  however.  "motherfucker  ,"  he  swore  .  he  got  ready  to  kick  back  ,  but  stopped  at  the  question  cj  asked.  "ok  ,  first  of  all  ,  ow.  completely  unnecessary  to  leave  me  both  blind  and  limping.  not  cool.  second  ...  i  don't  know  man  ,  a  lot  of  things  are  kinda  weird  right  now.  feels  like  i  have  a  lot  to  go  through."
CJ didn't think the process seemed like it would take as long as Liam was saying it would. He’d call someone up, they’d see how Liam clearly needed a dog, and then CJ had a new furry friend. Simple. “Want me to like, call them?” He offered, “I’m sick at convincing people for things. I have like twenty McRib coupons right now.” Of course, he needed to check the expiry date…
He glanced at his friend, frowning slightly, not being able to help the niggling feeling something else was up with Liam rather than his dilemma (and was it really) of getting a service animal. So, in true friendship fashion, he kicked him in the shins. “What’s up dude? It’s not really the dog is it?” He might have not been booksmart, barely passed as street smart, but he was smart in one thing: vibes.

liam  didn't  know  where  cal  went  in  moments  like  these.  his  eyes  seemed  to  brighten  slightly  ,  while  at  the  same  time  feeling  so  far  away.  back  in  ireland  it  had  been  more  of  the  same  ,  with  cal  feeling  even  more  tense  than  he  was  in  blue  harbor.  it  wasn't  clear  if  liam  made  the  situation  better  or  worse.  what  he  did  know  ,  however  ,  was  that  behind  closed  doors  ,  away  from  prying  eyes  ,  cal  felt  lighter.  here  he  didn't  shy  away  from  touch  and  instead  initiated  it.  the  back  and  forth  was  confusing  at  best  ,  but  it  was  just  as  addicting  and  liam  couldn't  help  but  fall  headfirst  into  the  feelings  he  had  tried  to  repress  in  the  months  since  cal  had  left.  liam  got  pulled  out  of  his  thoughts  as  his  head  hit  his  pillow  ,  and  he  immediately  wrapped  his  hands  around  cal's  neck  to  pull  him  close.  "i  dunno  ,"  he  mumbled  ,  lips  tracing  a  pattern  against  cal's  cheek.  "you  are  pretty  active  no  matter  how  exhausted  i  am."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“i know you can walk on your own,” calahan smirked, “but that doesn’t mean i’m going to let you do it. you weigh nothing, anyway.” or at least he didn’t weigh anything in cal’s arms. there was an undeniable weight on the irishman’s shoulders — often it felt as though he was carrying the earth on the flats of his shoulder blades, crushed beneath the force, pushing one foot in front of the other in order to carry on, but none of that had ever been the boy’s fault. if anything, in those moments, calahan was lighter — albeit temporarily. he was able to forget the expectations of his mother, of his brothers, of the church; they could be cal and liam for an hour, an evening, a weekend. soon enough he was draping liam’s body down upon the soft sheets, easily climbing on top of him, pinning the boy’s body between his muscular thighs and dipping to meet their lips once again. “you need to conserve your energy, hm? don’t want you exhaustin’ yourself before we do anything together…” it was a telltale sign, one that the other undoubtedly noticed, when calahan’s accent thickened and his voice dropped, sounding like the knocking together of two ocean stones.

it  was  awkward  to  hear  him  be  described  that  way  ,  but  liam  supposed  that  that  was  what  he'd  been  for  all  these  years.  he'd  broken  her  heart  and  left  her  alone  when  she  needed  him.  liam  could  tell  that  dahlia  was  trying  to  put  on  a  brave  face  ,  joke  about  it  like  he  did  with  so  many  things  ,  but  there  was  no  denying  that  it  was  still  a  sore  subject.  "well  ..."  he  laughed  shortly  ,  shuffling  his  feet  and  suddenly  feeling  like  her  father  was  standing  behind  her  with  a  shovel.  "no  need.  i  know  i  was  never  his  favourite  person  ,  even  before  i  messed  up."  there  was  no  use  denying  it.  liam  didn't  need  the  man's  forgiveness  ,  but  he  also  knew  that  it  was  unlikely  that  he  was  ever  gonna  get  it. still  ,  hearing  lia  pretty  much  say  that  she  wouldn't  run  the  other  way  if  she  saw  him  around  a  little  while  longer  made  the  stone  sitting  in  his  chest  feel  much  lighter.  "thank  you  ,  lia  ,"  he  said  in  a  moment  of  genuine  honesty.  "kinda  felt  like  you  had  the  deciding  vote  ,  though.  after  all  ,  i  did  promise  to  leave  asap  !"  she  was  still  the  same  girl  ,  somehow.  spunky  and  fierce  with  an  air  of  softness  surrounding  her.  "don't  know  if  i  know  what  the  right  move  is  ,  to  be  honest.  i'm  meeting  more  ghosts  than  i  thought  i  would  here  ..."  he  didn't  feel  like  it  was  necessary  to  tell  her  about  cal.  seemed  a  bit  cruel  considering.  but  everything  that  he'd  left  ,  or  that  had  left  him  ,  seemed  to  appear  in  blue  harbor.

Dahlia gave him a considering look, trying to keep her expression light. It made her heart ache, the way he tried so hard to make it all sound like he was fine. Maybe he even believed he was. But even if a decade had passed, Lia knew him well enough to catch the cracks beneath the surface. “I think some people would say that’s the universe just trying to keep you humble,” she teased with a playful smirk. “And my dad…” Dahlia trailed off, trying to find the right words. The truth of the matter was that not many of Dahlia’s friends that knew her back then were Liam’s biggest fans – her father least of all – but she couldn’t help but feel protective of Liam.  “I’ll put in a good word for you, convince him you’re not the villain of the story anymore.” She laughed awkwardly, trying to force some humor into the conversation to keep it light. His comment about staying threw her off, her eyes flickering with uncertainty. Of course, he’d been in town months at this point, but Lia had been clinging to the statement he’d made. He wasn’t going to be in town for long. The notion that he might stay had her chest filling with what felt dangerously like hope, and she refused to go there. There’s nothing to be hopeful for. Maybe if she repeated that to herself enough times, her heart would get the message. Realizing she’d been silent a moment to long, Dahlia cleared her throat. “That’s your call, Liam,” she replied with a wry smile. “Blue Harbor isn’t the worst place to hang around. And, uh–” she hesitated, her next words suddenly feeling more vulnerable than she wanted them to be. “I wouldn’t be the one telling you to leave.” A moment of silence and then she shifted awkwardly, looking away. “But, like I said. It’s whatever you decide. Do what’s right for you.”

"still  ,"  liam  replied  ,  feeling  a  bit  at  a  loss.  "you  should  do  the  work  you  were  hired  to  do  ...  not  just  everything  they  don't  want  to  take  responsibility  for.  seems  kinda  shitty."  he  shrugged  ,  not  really  able  to  offer  any  advice.  liam  was  painfully  aware  of  how  spoiled  he  had  been  his  whole  life.  everything  had  kind  of  fallen  into  his  lap  (  not  school  and  his  internship  ,  he  had  worked  his  fucking  ass  off  for  that  )  and  he'd  been  very  fortunate  in  that  he'd  never  had  to  work  unless  he  wanted  to.  he  knew  that  that  wasn't  the  case  for  everyone  ,  and  jasper  probably  couldn't  pick  and  choose  which  tasks  they  felt  like  doing  that  day.  "and  even  if  you  don't  like  breaks  you  should  take  them.  don't  let  them  take  advantage  of  you.  if  you  work  through  your  break  you're  essentially  working  for  free." the  gossiping  about  love  and  boys  were  one  of  liam's  favourite  past  times  with  jasper.  it  had  taken  some  coaxing  ,  but  once  they  got  started  it  was  hard  to  put  an  end  to  it.  they  had  affectionately  dubbed  their  little  duo  with  a  cheeky  little  nickname  that  had  become  a  sort  of  inside  joke  between  the  two  of  them.  "is  he  handsome  ?"  liam  sing-songed  while  taking  a  bite  of  his  cinnamon  bun.  "and  jaspy  ,  you  cheeky  little  –  what  is  this  more  you're  speaking  of  ?"  he  gently  nudged  his  friend  ,  careful  as  to  not  spill  any  of  his  hot  chocolate.  "what  nasty  things  have  you  been  up  to,  jaspy  ?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“i’m the only person that’s in.” jasper sometimes wondered why he gave so much to a job that didn’t respect him even half as much. it was because, to the librarian, books were all that they knew, and were some of the only things that could truly bring them the peace they had been searching for their entire life. words were safe. they were predictable, pre-written ; he could skip ahead and read chapters and never be surprised if he didn’t want to be. life wasn’t like that. more importantly, there were significantly less dragons, witches and magical creatures in reality. “i’m in all day every day. i don’t like breaks. i suppose they want to make use of me.” sometimes he thought that he could run the entire show, if he was given the chance to do so. but getting the position in the first place had been difficult enough, and jasper wasn’t about to rock the boat and put his job as risk for a needless increase in responsibility. they sat gently down on the bench liam had picked out, gently puffing air into the steam that rose from their hot chocolate. liam’s shock didn’t register. jasper merely shrugged. “yes. he’s really cute,” he took a tentative bite of his pain au chocolat, “tall. and he’s kind to me. we, um … ” jasper brushed away a fleck of pastry from the corner of their lip, dark eyes focusing on the cup in front of them. “we did more than just kissing.”

liam  knew  that  ruby  was  trying  to  come  up  with  possible  solutions  ,  but  something  in  him  wanted  to  fight  back  every  suggestion  because  of  the  protectiveness  he  had  over  his  childhood  home.  it  had  been  in  the  family  for  decades  and  the  thought  of  some  new  family  coming  in  and  taking  over  made  him  faintly  sick.  "i  guess  i  could  get  a  roommate  ,"  he  muttered  grumpily.  "but  i  don't  know  who  i'd  ...  want  around  all  the  time." hearing  that  ruby  had  struggled  with  the  same  things  he  was  now  going  through  helped  a  little  ,  even  though  it  pained  him  to  know  that  they'd  probably  been  struggling  in  silence.  but  that  also  made  them  easier  to  talk  to  about  this.  they'd  gone  through  this  as  well.  "why  do  you  think  i'm  considering  putting  down  roots  after  they're  gone  ?"  it  felt  childish  to  say  ,  but  liam  could  feel  the  guilt  eating  away  at  him.  it  had  been  years  since  he  saw  his  parents  and  now  it  was  too  late.  "i  feel  like  ...  i  don't  know  ,  like  i  failed  them  ,  maybe  ?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the pang settled through them. though he didn't seem to be upset. there were times that being more honest, in that vein, wasn't the best idea. ruby always sustained a lingering fear that something they would say would be far too much. it'd happened a lot; it wouldn't surprise them. but rather, disappoint them. they gave a half-hearted smile. "listen, debates are overrated anyways. turns into arguing. and i guess it's that weird ... thing, too, of not wanting to ask for roommates?" they almost wanted to ask if he had other family who could come live with him. when someone was lost in their tribe, other families and members would gather for weeks until the bereaved were ready to move on — and even then, lingering after.
there was something to be said about combating the loneliness. "i gotcha. i did the same thing, kinda. but it was in new york. the thing is, i just kept taking me with me. y'know? thought i left a bit of myself behind in each place, but that's just not how it works. it can be good to root down, which i never thought i'd say. being here was the last thing i ever wanted." this could be seen as a confession for another — for ruby had only told their mothers this, and otherwise hinted around at it, even with their closest friends. something relieving, really, about letting it release.

THREAD COMPLETE !
liam didn't know how long they were standing there, panting and sweaty and part of the same body. he could feel when cal let himself be honest for one moment, felt it when his arms gently wrapped themselves arounf his middle and his lips trailed across the fragile skin of his throat. every movement was loud as a gunshot in the dark storage room. which is also why he heard when cal returned to his warped reality. the rustling of fabric over hips, a belt buckle fastening, a deep sigh. liam turned around and felt strangely exposed as he still had his pants around his ankles and cum trailing down his legs. i should get back to the bar. it wasn't a surprise, yet it somehow was. it wasn't the first time that cal had left after fucking him into oblivion. at least this time he had the decency to say something before he left. "you're just gonna leave ?" it sounded petulant even to his own ears. cal still looked like he'd fucked someone in a backroom and he wanted to go out like that ? "i don't even get an explanation ? you've been here the whole time ? ever since–" he cut himself off because even though liam wanted, needed, answers this wouldn't give him them. "yeah, dude, whatever." he bent down to pull up his own underwear and jeans, not really caring how disgusting it made him feel.

Just reach out if you need anything. I or my assistant Nate will be more than willing to look into resources for you. I do remember reading over some information about your mother's involvement in the club. I know they would love for you to attend, as would I. If you were feeling up to it, of course.

calahan had never been one to believe in possession, in exorcism, but he was sure something had taken hold of him. their messy, complicated, fractured world faded, leaving behind two bodies and the explosions they had created together. his skin was fire, and his hips continued at their violent pace as they both crashed rhythmically against the shelves. bottles clattered to the ground, the standing mop collapsing atop of calahan’s leg; little reminders that he wasn’t wrapped up in a forbidden dream. liam was woven into every touch, every shiver that ran through his body, every quiet sigh that escaped him. his high faded, and cal’s face pressed against the shoulder of the boy that had once been his everything (and, admittedly, still was). it was something beyond a hook-up. instead, it something unspoken, felt in the spaces between breaths, in the way their bodies fit together like puzzle pieces. it was a silent vow, more real than any they’d ever said aloud, the three words and eight letters that calahan had tripped over whenever he had tried to speak them. as they stood there in the dark, in this fragile peace, calahan slowly looped his arms around liam’s middle. It was a momentary touch, a fleeting display of everything he wished he could say. his lips ran up the side of the boy’s throat before he eventually pulled away with a slight grunt, palming blindly through the lowlight, pulling up his boxers and trousers and securing his heavy belt. he ran a hand through his messy hair, trying — fruitlessly — to comb out the telltale signs of sex.  “i should…” he cleared his throat and smoothed a crease out of his shirt, “... should get back to the bar.”

liam only waved cj away, knowing better than to trusting him with anything scientific. "you having teeth like a bear is more likely than you knowing why you have a lactose intolerance," he replied snootily. "you're so full of shit, dude." the ice cream had begun to melt and liam quickly licked where it had spilled over his fingers. it tasted just as good melted. "i mean, i might get a dog," liam hurried to say. "but the process is really long because i have to show them that i need one and i think i kinda shot myself in the foot by ignoring my issues for so long." hopefully that wouldn't damage his chances. "it would be awesome. and fuck off, dude, don't just say stuff like that."
As Liam pointed his middle finger at him, CJ leaned over to pretend to bite it off. “Don’t play with me dude, I have teeth like a bear.” He warned, though ironically there was no bite to his bark at all. “And I’ll have you know, it’s actually DNA, not genes.” With the full confidence of someone who knew what he was talking about.
His eyes lit up at the possibility of Liam getting a dog. He knew it wouldn't be like…a real dog, because you weren’t allowed to pet them and stuff, but still, a dog was a dog and they were fucking dope as hell. “You were? That’s awesome!” The skateboarder exclaimed, pausing and lowering his voice. “That is awesome…right?” He wrinkled his nose at the next remark. “Hey, that’s not fair. I’d be amazing as a blind person!”

this was a new type of game, liam decided. they both knew how the night would end, yet neither of them wanted to give up on the charade. "i think you're lying to yourself," liam replied quietly, gaze focused on her lips. a control was shoved into his hands. "you really wanna get your ass kicked by a blind man ?" he asked, knowing full well that he'd probably lose terribly before throwing it to the side in favour of more fulfilling missions. "i definitely think that's what i heard," liam replied immediately and leaned his head into her touch. it felt nice in a comforting sort of way. "it wasn't hard to notice your eyes on me all the time." it was, for once, not said with the cocky undertone he'd used thus far. just spoken plainly. "it was very flattering, caldwell."
Tumblr media
"See? That's your arrogance talking. Proving my point," Lainey boasted, pausing at the doorway to unlace her boots and kick them off. She took a long look at Liam sprawled out on her couch, a touch of a self-satisfied smirk on her face. "Definitely a con," she decided, once and for all, as she grabbed the controllers and sat next to Liam on the couch.
"Oh, that's definitely not what I said, Nicholas Sparks," she teased, turning completely to look at him-- if only so he could see her roll her eyes. She dropped her arm behind his head, fingers brushing through the ends of his hair lazily. "Not like it would've mattered," Lainey laughed, tracing his jaw with her eyes, then adding, softly, "Not like you didn't already know."

liam carefully leaned forward and closed the gap between them, placing a chaste kiss on his lips. there was so much going on behind cal's eyes, thought storming and raging when what cal deserved were still waters. liam was close enough that he could make out the soft look on cal's face. could see how his eyes trailed over liam's face in the afternoon light. i could love him, came an unforgiving thought. sweeping through liam's mind, he would be easy to love. as quick as it appeared it was gone and liam found himself off the couch, disoriented as cal pulled him close and carried him toward the bedroom liam had brought him to so many times since reuniting. the pounding of liam's heart told him that he hadn't imagined the thought, though. instead of dwelling on it, would do him no good, he buried his head in cal's neck and sought shelter there. "i can walk on my own," he mumbled, wished for nothing less but unable to keep it in. he heard the door to the bedroom open. knew that within a few seconds he'd feel the soft bedding beneath his body.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there, they could exist in a bubble. the world was far away, and for a moment calahan couldn't be scared by it. instead he could open himself up to love and really feel something, a warmth that had once felt so wrong. he wondered how something could feel so good — so right — if it was forbidden, not only laying with a man but doing so outside of wedlock and spitting in the face of christ’s divinity. in that home, though, they could close the curtains and forget. their acts could be confessed in the morning, eyes closed and head bowed, mumbling under his breath into the silence. there were much more important things to expel than sins. “we can have all night,” he purred, their noses touching, “just you and me. bed. we don’t have to think about anything else.” it was easier for liam, to shed the outside world and forget. cal wished he could shut off the guilt. for the moment, all he could do was push it to one side and hope it faded away. calahan lifted the boy with ease, holding him close like a koala clinging to a tree, making his way through the too-large home, tracing the familiar path to the bedroom.

"it's a great, fucking house," liam admitted. "it's way too big for me alone, but if i maybe had someone living there with me," like my parents, "it would feel better. all my memories of my parents are tied to that house." ruby's blunt words about the founding families was somewhat shocking, but he also appreciated the honesty. "remind me to never go against you in a debate." a short chuckle, and liam considered his next words carefully. "i don't ... think that i've felt at home for a long time." the confession was one he hadn't said out loud before, too scared to voice it because that made it real. "i did a lot of weird shit back in europe and then when the accident happened i just never stopped moving." truth be told, his life the past few years had been a blur of clubs, alcohol, bodies and different countries that all somehow felt the same. somehow the monotony of blue harbor felt comforting after never resting for so long. "i think i might stick around ... for a little longer."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"ugh. tell me about it. and some of the coffee that's been served lately has nearly sent me over that edge." ruby recognised that liam was one of the first people they bothered to admit this too. sure, it wasn't with any kind of intense detail, but the fact of the matter remained: rarely did they confide it. didn't want to burden, and definitely didn't want to make it seem like they still didn't have their life together. shouldn't the pieces be falling into place alongside the puzzle right now? "though i do gotta say. an heirloom house like that is pretty nifty."
they paused, before their next line of thinking. "but i mean. if you can barely stand to be in it, none of the fucking founder-names in the world can change that. not trying to insult anybody." ruby, having been a native, knew some things about the founders and their homes. but that didn't compare to loss, and to be frank, loss thus erased anything else to them. "if it's not home, even after you do try ... it's not embarrassing or, like, a shame if you'd want to move away again." though they also knew this was easier said than done. after all, ruby themself often professed in their teenaged years that they would never return to blue harbor either, and yet, here they sat. "does knowing all that make you wanna make ... more of an effort?"

“‘sup, dude ? can I help you ?” liam’s voice came out casual, though he squinted into the fuzzy outline ahead of him, straining to make sense of who stood before him. as usual, he couldn’t make out their face, and it didn’t help that he didn’t recognise the voice either. a common scenario for him, and one he handled by assuming he was simply in someone’s way again. but something gnawed at him—the stranger knew his name, which put him at a disadvantage he was never comfortable with. despite his easygoing nature, moments like these always prickled his sense of vulnerability. with a polite smile, liam continued, “have we met before ? if so, i’m sorry. eyes are fucked, and i don’t recognise your voice.” the line had become something of a reflex by now, a sentence he’d repeated so many times it felt like a memorised script, each word falling into place naturally. but even as the words left his mouth, a slight unease lingered. there was always a sense of performance in these encounters, a layer of his true self tucked beneath the practiced, lighthearted exterior. nevertheless, he waited, his expression open, curious, and disarmingly friendly as he prepared for whatever came next.

I'll just be in and out, Linc promised as he ducked out of the still-running Volkswagen. Dad was half-in and half-out of his afternoon nap in the passenger seat, the early autumn breeze kissing his face while Steely Dan played softly on the radio. It was kind of a perfect scene, true serenity, and Linc would've stayed and appreciated it if he wasn't on a mission-- and terrified of Mom's wrath if he didn't get home with pecorino and basil by the time the potatoes were done baking.
He successfully located a wedge of pecorino and narrowly avoided the woman talking him into buying a half-pound of parmesan. Suffice it to say, Linc was feeling good. As he rounded the stall in search of basil, he stopped short to avoid the other. "Oh, no problem..." Linc said, automatically waving it off, though the words died in his throat when he recognized the offender. "Liam. I didn't know you were in town." His words were clipped at the edges, and though Linc didn't think of himself as a particularly unkind person, he didn't exactly have the warm-fuzzies about someone who'd left one of his closest friends heartbroken not so long ago.
